Subject: Linux StepByStep re-launch
Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 21:04:04 CST
Approximately 1 month ago, http://linux.nf had severe hardware problems and
crashed hard. The site has just recently been relaunched on all new
hardware and is back in perfect running order. However, all prior list
members need to re-subscribe as the list membership info was lost. Anyone
can subscribe by visiting http://linux.nf/mailman/listinfo/linux-users
I'd also like to announce that news.linux.nf is now 100% functional. All
currently hosted email lists on http://linux.nf are now gated to their own
newsgroups on this machine. Swing by the newsgroups and join the discussion
if you prefer not to fill your inbox up.
The Linux StepByStep site has also recently published their sitewide
copyright license. It is fully Open Content compliant.
Thanks! And visit http://linux.nf when you need help on getting something
done on your Linux box that you're not quite sure how to do.

Subject: Announcing the Parma Polyhedra Library (version 0.2)
Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 21:04:11 CST
We are glad to announce the release of
The Parma Polyhedra Library (version 0.2)
http://www.cs.unipr.it/ppl/
The Parma Polyhedra Library is a C++ library for the manipulation
of convex polyhedra. The applications of convex polyhedra include
program analysis, optimized compilation, integer and combinatorial
optimization and statistical data-editing.
The Parma Polyhedra Library is:
+ user friendly: you write `x + 2*y + 5*z <= 7'
when you mean it;
+ fully dynamic: available virtual memory is the only
limitation to the dimension of anything;
+ written in standard C++: meant to be portable;
+ exception-safe: never leaks resources or leaves invalid
object fragments around;
+ rather efficient: and we hope to make it even more so;
+ thoroughly documented: perhaps not ``literate programming''
but close enough;
+ free software: distributed under the terms of the
GNU General Public License.
For more information, visit the Parma Polyhedra Library (PPL)
web site at http://www.cs.unipr.it/ppl/

From: ERDI Gergo <cactus@cactus.rulez.org>
Subject: Guikachu 0.99.0 "Image of Me": GNOME Resource editor for PalmOS
Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 21:04:23 CST
Dear users of both large and small computing tools,
A new release of Guikachu is available.
About Guikachu
==============
Guikachu is a GNOME application for graphical editing of resource
files for PalmOS-based pocket computers. The user interface is
modelled after Glade, the GNOME UI builder.
Catch it all from http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu/
Features
========
* libXML-based I/O
* Exporting to PilRC .rcp files (compile with pilrc -H)
* String resources
* Dialog resources
* Menu resources
* Form resources
* Per-application resources (e.g. version number)
* WYSIWYG Form Editor, with drag & drop capability
* XSLT style sheets and shell script to generate RCP files from
Guikachu documents
* Sample file with sample GNU PalmOS SDK-based application
About this release
==================
This is the first beta release of Guikachu, the penultimate step of
the long road towards 1.0. All known bugs and run-time warnings are
fixed, and even new ones since the last 0.98 release have been
discovered. The documentation style sheets and build system are
included and are nearing completeness. A nearly finished sample
application is included.
Since the code base is now 100% frozen, now is the chance to finish
existing translations and create new ones. Some of the existing
translations have only one or two strings missing, so completing these
should be quite simple.
The documentation system uses a straightforward XML format to minimize
redundancy in resource and widget descriptions. If you'd like to
contribute to the documentation but don't know how, just send your
contributions in plain text to the Guikachu mailing list.
Guikachu uses GTKmm and GNOMEmm for its user interface. File I/O is
implemented via the libxml package. Dialog windows are loaded via
libglade. You will need the versions of these packages available in
the GNOME 1.4 bundle (with the exception of GNOMEmm which you will
need to upgrade to version 1.2.0)
To actually create the PalmOS resource files, you will also need PilRC
(part of the GNU PalmOS SDK) to compile the .rpc files produced by
Guikachu.
To use the stand-alone Guikachu-to-RCP converter program, xsltproc
(part of the libxslt package) is required.
Beware of bugémons!

From: Stelian Pop <pop@noos.fr>
Subject: Demp/restore 0.4b25 released
Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 21:04:23 CST
Reply-To: Stelian Pop <pop@noos.fr>
A new version of dump/restore, the ext2/ext3 filesystem backup
utilities, has been released today.
This new release fixes some minor bugs, adds some new features and,
most important of all, adds a workaround for the dump hanging
problem some users have encountered.
The full Changelog is appended below.
You can download the new release here:
http://dump.sourceforge.net
Enjoy.
Stelian.
Changes between versions 0.4b24 and 0.4b25 (released November 17, 2001)
=======================================================================
1. Added a mini howto from Patrick Walsh in the examples
directory.
2. Minor man pages syntax corrections. Thanks to
Chris Danis <screechco@home.com> for reporting the bugs.
3. Added a script from David B. Peterson <dave@toppledwagon.com>
to the examples section. It features dumping several
filesystems to a remote tape drive upon ssh.
4. Added a patch provided by Richard Jones <rich@annexia.org>
which allows BRADEMAX (number of read errors tolerated by
dump) to be adjusted using the -I option.
5. Fixed a bug which disabled doing "restore -C -f -". Thanks
to Clemens Stiglechner <a9401816@unet.univie.ac.at> for the
patch.
6. Add the -l option to restore to specify if, when doing a
remote restore, the file used to access the backup is a
regular file (the defaults being a tape drive). Restore needs
to know this information when reading a remote compressed
dump. Previously, this information was autodetected, but
the autodetection code fails (with ioctl: Inappropriate ioctl
for device) when using a non Linux remote box. Thanks to
many users and especially to Eros Albertazzi
<eros@lamel.bo.cnr.it> for reporting this.
7. Found a workaroung for the dump deadlock problem (3 childs
stuck in pause(), father in read()). The workaround seems
to work for me and several beta-testers. If it doesn't work
for you, please report back.
8. Updated the RPM spec file (BuildPrereq, URL etc).

#!/bin/sh
for d in /proc/ide/hd* ; do
if [ `cat $d/media` = 'disk' ]; then
hdparm -qm8 -qu1 -qc1 -qd1 -qW1 /dev/${d##*/}
elif [ `cat $d/media` = 'cdrom' ]; then
hdparm -qu1 -qd1 /dev/${d##*/}
fi

Subject: SECURITY: NSA Security-enhanced Linux updated
Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 21:04:59 CST
A new release of the LSM-based SELinux prototype has been put on the
SELinux web site <http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/>. This release is based
on the lsm-2001_11_05 patch against kernel 2.4.14. It fixes a number
of bugs, cleans up some code, and is based on newer versions of the
kernel and utilities.
Security-enhanced Linux incorporates a strong, flexible mandatory
access control architecture into the major subsystems of the Linux
kernel. The system provides a mechanism to enforce the separation of
information based on confidentiality and integrity requirements. This
allows threats of tampering and bypassing of application security
