Subject: GNU MDK version 0.3.5 released
From: "Jose A. Ortega Ruiz" <jaortega@acm.org>

GNU MDK 0.3.5 has been released. It is available from
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/mdk/ and mirrors of that site (see list of
mirror sites at http://www.gnu.org/order/ftp.html) [0].

GNU MDK provides a simulator of D. Knuth's MIX computer, and a
development environment to write, run and debug MIXAL programs on it.

New in this release:

** In gmixvm, when the mouse pointer is over a MIXAL source line, the
status bar shows the value of the variables appearing in this line.

** The current symbol table can be displayed, in gmixvm, using the menu
   command Debug->Symbols...

** Bug fix: the load, compile and run file dialogs now get the correct
   filename under linux.

** Bug fix: fonts used by gmixvm are now always correctly saved.

** Bug fix: 'psym' now works correctly in gmixvm.

** Bug fix: the symbol table for a MIX file is now correctly recovered
both in gmixvm and mixvm (negative values where incorrectly
   converted to a positive value).

Visit the MDK home page at http://www.gnu.org/software/mdk/mdk.html.

Bug reports should go to bug-gnu-mdk@gnu.org.

Enjoy!

[0] GNU MDK source and binary packages can also be downloaded from
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=13897&release_id=35894

From: crosser@average.org (Eugene Crosser)
Subject: NetWatcher - another network monitoring system

NetWatcher is an Open Source network "health monitor".
What? No, please, not another one! There are so many -
Nocol, Netsaint, OpenNMS, Big Brother, Big Sister, Mon, ...

So, why did I do that? The tools that I looked at had one or more of
the following problems:

 - require special agent run on the monitored systems. You may not
want to install not well audited software on your production machines.

 - resource consuming for the monitoring server. Forking a process to
check every object is way expensive.

 - have configuration in a text file. While I wholeheartedly appreciate
this unixish approach, it becomes impractical if you have to describe
several hundreds of objects in one file.

What NetWatcher does:

 - Uses HTTP as monitoring and management console.

 - Is written in Perl5 for maximum portability.

 - Avoids propriatry agents, tries to stay with SNMPd (but propriatry
   agents are possible).

 - Uses SQL database to keep both current status of objects *and*
   configuration.

 - Is designed to logically separate monitors that do actual probes on
objects from the core that makes decisions and sends notifications.

What NetWatcher does not:

 - Does not have event correlation (you cannot tell it to ignore
web server failure if the router in front of it is broken).

 - Does not have display filters (you cannot ask it to show only specific
   groups of objects/statuses).

 - Does not have object grouping and users grouping (you have to assign
   responsibilities individually).

 - Does not include any historic data processing.

At the time of this writing (2001-08-17) the project has entered "early
beta" stage. Almost all planned features are implemented (see TODO file
for the rest), and the thing runs in production environment on our site
(performing 389 distinct checks on 203 objects, with frequency from two
checks per minute to one check per 15 minutes) and it is reasonably stable.
If you think the concept matches your needs, give it a try.

From: sanface@sanface.com (SANFACE Software)
Subject: SHAREWARE: txt2pdf 5.1

Most of your documents are text files. Usually, your reports from
legacy applications, DBs, ERP applications and datawarehouse are
textual. txt2pdf allows you to take those old text files and turn them
into PDF's using only PERL, which means you don't even need to pass
the data through PostScript first.

You can run txt2pdf on any system that runs PERL, but it has been
tested and is verified to work on many operating systems.
etxt2pdf is the executable version of txt2pdf. It's been specially
compiled for those users who simply can't or don't want to run PERL on
their systems. It has all the functionality of the original perl
version, and is merely distributed in binary form for your
convenience.
We currently have 5 executable versions: Windows, Linux, Solaris, AIX,
HP-UX
If you're interested in a binary for another operating system, such as
FreeBSD please let us know, and we'll send you one. With enough
requests, we'll also add one here permanently. Please note that the
Windows version comes with an extra tool known as Visual txt2pdf.

Here are some of the things that you can achieve with txt2pdf:
You can mark coloured (using PERL regular expressions) phrases in the
produced PDF files.
You can mark bold, italic and bold italic phrases in the produced
PDFfiles.
You can add page numbers on every page.
You can add text at the beginning and at the end of every file.
You can add a border to every page.
Internet specific phrases such as http://... ftp://...
mailto:...file:... ldap:... news:... will automatically be made into
clickable URL's.
You can create a link to a specific age within a PDF document by
simply adding http://...pdfdocument#pdfmark
Every word like MIME:... will automatically become a link that will
launch the correct application to open that file.
You can use background and foreground layers.
All predefined encodings (WinAnsiEncoding, MacRomanEncoding,
MacExpertEncoding, PDFDocEncoding) supported by the PDF format and the
Unix default are supported by txt2pdf.
It's possible to rerun txt2pdf infinitely (every configured second,
sleep feature) on a specific directory (and also it's recursive
directories) moving the produced PDF to a specific directory, and the
original text to a specific directory.
txt2pdf supports STDIN and STDOUT.
EPD 1.0 support. You can use EPD inside the background layer.
A License is ONLY $99.
SANFACE Software is going to give you a free license for every good
idea or good modify to txt2pdf.

txt2pdf is shareware
The txt2pdf source code is our company core business.
We trust you.
You can test text2pdf and modify it.
You can't use a modify version of txt2pdf for production purpose. You
can't resell txt2pdf or a modify version of it without SANFACE
Software authorization.
You can't copy part of it to include in your source without SANFACE
Software authorization.

What's new in this version

New example using the power of EPD.
Visual txt2pdf 2.0 with scheduler inside the Windows distribution.
minor fixes

Test txt2pdf 5.1!
You can find it at http://www.sanface.com/txt2pdf.html

From: staf wagemakers <stafwag@f2s.com>
Subject: cgipaf 1.0rc1

"cgipaf" allows users to change their un*x Password, Autoreply and mail
Forwarding by a web interface.

cgipaf is available at http://www.stafwag.f2s.com/cgipaf

REQUIREMENTS

+ a Un*x server (only tested with Debian gnu/Linux woody & potato and
   solaris 8)
+ a mailserver that uses procmail
 + webserver
 + gcc, ndbm or gdbm

OVERVIEW

cgipaf is a combination of three cgi programs:

passwd.cgi: allow users to update their password
viewmailcfg.cgi: allow users to view their current mail configuration.
 mailcfg.cgi: update the mail configuration

All programs use PAM for user authentication, systems without PAM are only
supported if they use the standard password file location (/etc/passwd
/etc/shadow) and the standard crypt function to encrypt the passwords.

If a password is changed it is possible to run a script to update SAMBA
 passwords, NIS configuration, etc.

The mail configuration is done by procmail, mailcfg.cgi creates a .procmailrc
in the user's home directory. If autoreply is enabled the autoreply message is
stored in ~/vacations.txt. When a user enables mail forwarding the user can
 choose to keep the messages.

For user authentication viewmailcfg.cgi creates a cookie, this cookie is
stored in the accessdb. mailcfg.cgi reads the cookie out the accessdb and
compares it with the cookie send by the users browser.

Users with too many invalid logins can be locked.

The minimum and maximum uid can be set in the configuration file, so you can
specify a range of uid's that are allowed to use cgipaf.

You can specify html files with a few PHP extensions for the login screen and
 error messages.

It's possible to use a redirect for the error messages, instead of plain html
 files.

PLEXUS SELECTS QUICK RESTORE FOR DATA PROTECTION

Workstation Solutions’ Software Protects WAN-based Data

AMHERST, N.H., August 27, 2001 – Workstation Solutions, Inc., the leader in
innovative data protection software, today announced that Plexus Corp.
(NASDAQ: PLXS) has selected Quick Restore data protection software for
centralized data backup and restore over the company’s nationwide WAN.

Plexus provides electronic design and manufacturing services to companies
for high-end products such as optical switches, wireless communications
infrastructure, and medical devices.

With a highly diverse offering of product development and manufacturing
services, Plexus requires reliable, scaleable, and centrally administered
data protection to ensure that vital data is secure. The company relies on
Quick Restore for flexible local and remote data protection of its
heterogeneous servers and clients, in order to meet the needs of customers
such as Cisco, GE, Lucent, Siemens, and Unisys.

Chuck Tomasi, corporate systems administrator, chose Quick Restore to
administer backups in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Washington, Colorado, and
California, all over a WAN from a central host in Neenah, WI.

"As our company grew, we liked Quick Restore because of its superior
facilities for centralized administration of heterogeneous servers, clients,
and tape devices," said Tomasi. "No other backup and restore solution works
as well in our environment."

Quick Restore data backup and recovery software provides seamless
integration among NAS, Linux, UNIX, and Microsoft Windows platforms in
heterogeneous network environments. It uses the industry-standard Network
Data Management Protocol (NDMP) for local or remote backup of NAS systems to
industry-leading tape drives and libraries.

At Plexus, Quick Restore directs Network Appliance (NetApp), UNIX, and
Windows NT servers in various offices to back up their data to local tape
drives either via SCSI or a LAN. Only control commands and index data travel
over the WAN. This configuration allows central control with high
performance backup because the high volume backup data does not travel over
the WAN.

"Workstation Solutions did the best job of understanding our requirements
for backup over a WAN and proposing an appropriate solution." said Chuck
Tomasi. "Veritas wanted us to upgrade our hardware and software
infrastructure to do this. You shouldn’t need a T1 line to do WAN-based
backup."

In addition to providing central administration for the far-flung network of
locations, Quick Restore, Oracle, and NetApp snapshot software enable
zero-downtime backups for a new global ERP system based on J. D. Edwards and
Oracle. The ERP system will manage business functions, including quoting,
purchasing, financials, and final product management. A pilot ERP system is
currently deployed on a Sun E450 server with data located on a NetApp F720.
In the final production system, the Quick Restore administrative host will
manage backups for multiple IBM RS/6000s and two mirrored NetApp F840s, with
up to 2½ TB of storage.

Tomasi is confident that Plexus’ data is secure, protected by Quick Restore.
"We expect data backups to be reliable. If backups are not reliable, time is
lost. In this business, it’s all about time to market. Quick Restore’s
reliability is key to our business."
