Subject: Dump/restore 0.4b22 released.
Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 21:10:04 GMT
Reply-To: Stelian Pop <pop@noos.fr>

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi folks,

I've released a new version of dump/restore, the linux ext2 filesystem
backup utilities. The rumours about the dump's death were exagerated,
dump is still here alive, better and better with each release, carrying
for your data.

This new release includes several new features (compression support,
quick file access mode), and many bug fixes (especially the LFS support).

Get it at http://dump.sourceforge.net and enjoy.

Stelian.

Changelog follows:

Changes between versions 0.4b21 and 0.4b22 (released May 12, 2001)
==================================================================

1. Made dump report the number of blocks dumped per volume.
        Thanks to Kenneth Porter <shiva@well.com> for the suggestion.

2. Fix a bug in dump where waiting too much at the 'change volumes'
        question caused the volume to be rewritten. Thanks to
        Graham Reed <greed@users.sourceforge.net> for reporting the
        bug and providing a patch.

3. Added a compression option to dump, contributed by Jerry
        Peters <gapeters@worldnet.att.net>.

        WARNING: the compression works only on files/pipes and
        drives supporting variable block size.

        WARNING2: tapes created using the compression feature are
        incompatible with the standard dump tape format, and a
        version of restore >= 0.4b22 will be needed for extraction.

4. Fixed some compilation problems for glibc 2.2.2 and 64 bit
        architectures. Thanks to Paul Slootman <paul@debian.org> for
        the patch and to Bdale Garbee <bdale@gag.com> for forwarding
        it upstream.

5. Many cleanups (CPP defines, const char warnings, check of
        ext2fs COMPAT flags, time_t cleanups, added libext2 version
        in dump usage text) by Andreas Dilger <adilger@turbolinux.com>.

6. Made --prefix option work in configure. All the install path
        are now based on the configure parameters.

7. Added the Quick File Access mode in dump/restore, contributed
        by Uwe Gohlke <uwe@ugsoft.de>. In this mode, dump stores in
        a file tape position for each inode, and this file is used by
        restore (if called with parameter Q and the filename)
        to directly position the tape at the file restore is currently
        working on. This saves hours when restoring single files from
        large backups, saves the tapes and the drive's head. Use
        --enable-qfa option of configure to compile in the QFA support.

8. Added the possibility to dump several files and directories
        in a single invocation of dump. Thanks to Uwe Gohlke
        <uwe@ugsoft.de> for implementing this option.

9. Fixed the dumping and restoring of files with holes
        (files ending with holes didn't get dumped or restored
        correctly).

10. Fixed a socket descriptor leak in dump, which leaved opened
        3 file descriptors per dump process (and there is one dump
        process per tape).

11. Fixed dump large file system support, by explicit use of
        open64/lseek64/etc functions (explicit use needed because
        e2fsprogs libraries don't behave well when compiled with
        FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64).

From: Excelsior Java Team <java@excelsior-usa.removethis.com>
Subject: xFunction 2.0 for Windows and Linux is out!
Date: Thu, 24 May 2001 21:14:16 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

May 13th, 2001, 2000, Novosibirsk - Excelsior, LLC today announced
release of xFunction 2.0 for Windows and xFunction 2.0 for Linux.

WHAT IS IT (BRIEF)

Java library for interfacing to external functions written in any
programming language. Surpasses JNI in ease of use and other aspects.
Ideal solution for reuse of legacy code and non-Java third party
libraries.

WHAT IS IT (DETAILED)

The xFunction library is the universal solution for integration of Java
code with code written in other languages, superior in many aspects to
Java Native Interface (JNI). With xFunction, you no longer need to
implement those ugly native methods. Instead, you extend and instantiate
xFunction classes to create conventional Java objects representing
external functions, data structures, pointers, and callbacks. All
necessary data conversions and external function calls are done
seamlessly by the xFunction library:

    import com.excelsior.xFunction;
    ...
    /* Call Beep(1770,100) from KERNEL32.DLL */
    xFunction f = new xFunction("kernel32",
                                "int Beep(int,int)");
    f.invoke(new Argument(1770), new Argument(100));

Using xFunction, you may invoke any operating system API call or
function from any DLL or shared library in a natural and convenient
manner. xFunction allows you to achieve the highest levels of code reuse
without translating any source code to Java and/or writing cumbersome
JNI wrappers.

NEW IN THIS RELEASE

1. Linux version available
2. The limit on the number of simultaneously existing callbacks removed
3. The method Callback.free() introduced for deallocation of the
associated operating system resources

WHERE TO GET IT

A fully functional evaluation copy of xFunction is available for 60-day
evaluation at:

http://www.excelsior-usa.com/xfunctiondl.html

You may use the downloaded copy for the sole purpose of internal
evaluation during 60 day period. After that, you are strongly encouraged
to purchase or stop using it.

        Sketch 0.6.10 - A vector drawing program

Sketch is a vector drawing program for Linux and other unices. It's
intended to be a flexible and powerful tool for illustrations, diagrams
and other purposes.

It has advanced features like gradients, text along a path and clip
masks and is fully scriptable due to its implementation in a combination
of Python and C.

More information, sources and binaries are available at the website:
        http://sketch.sourceforge.net/

Summary of the Changes since 0.6.9:

   * Russian translation.

   * Several fixes to both the setup script and Sketch's internals to
     make it work with Python 2.1.

   * The SVG import filter has basic support for text and images.

   * In the print dialog, the "rotate ccw." checkbutton is automatically
     set when the document uses landscape page orientation.

   * Several bug fixes

Sketch is released under the GNU Library General Public License.

Subject: Linux/Forth kernel hybrid

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/install/clienux/interim/H3rL
is an x86 Linux 2.4.0test10 kernel image with the unprecedented property
of having a Forth-like system running as a kernel daemon, with user
interaction on vt 1. "H3rL" is "Hohensee's 3-ring Linux". A user
interface into kernelspace constitutes "0wnerland". The Forth-like
system in question is H3sm 1.5, Hohensee's 3-stack machine. It is
written entirely in assembly and enlarges a bzImage by about 8k.
It can hexdump or otherwise access kernel structures, and can invoke
Linux commands that take no arguments or switches. It is also a
subroutine-threaded extensible programming language.

The image in question is rdev'd to /dev/hda1. There are many different
harddrive drivers in the image. It does not use modules. The System.map
and .config for the image are cat'ed onto the end of the file itself.

H3rL can boot to a Linux partition if /dev/console is a plain file.
It is also best if the partition in question doesn't open a getty or
similar on tty1. If you attempt to boot H3rL and have any trouble by
all means email me. A fairly detailed description of how this
convergence was achieved has been posted to Usenet comp.lang.forth.

The userland H3sm is in the same directory as H3rL, along with other
novelties.
