z81 is a Sinclair ZX81 (aka TS1000) emulator. The ZX80 can also be
emulated. There are actually three versions - z81 (svgalib), xz81 (X),
and z81txt (for any text-mode Linux console; should even work on
MDA/CGA/EGA). Also included is zx81get, a ZX81 tape reader.

*The ROMs are not included*, so you'll have to obtain those
separately.

You can download z81 from ibiblio:

  ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/emulators/zx/z81-1.3.tar.gz

There's also a web page here:

  http://rus.members.beeb.net/z81.html

1.3 fixes some buffer overruns, and thus a denial-of-service risk in
the svgalib version. It also has much-needed improvements to the file
selector, and some fixes for the X version.

* Changes in z81 1.3

Fixed several possible buffer overruns.

The LOAD "" file selector now allows simple directory navigation, and
shift-q/shift-a to page up/down in the file list.

A few changes to avoid possible problems with copyright etc. - in
particular, the ROMs are no longer included.

Added support in X version for `delete window' message from window
manager.

Fixed the old bug where the X version wasn't redrawing in some
circumstances. This was due to Expose events on the image window not
being propagated to the parent (the slightly larger `borderwin').

The default SCALE (as specified in the Makefile) is now 2, giving a
more reasonable window size for the X version.

Added uninstall target to Makefile.

z81txt is no longer built by default.

Here's the LSM entry:

- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Begin4
Title: z81
Version: 1.3
Entered-date: 2001-03-21
Description: z81/z81txt/xz81 are ZX81 (TS1000) and ZX80 emulators
for (respectively) svgalib, text mode, and X. They
                load/save Xtender-format .P files, and support the
                ZX81's pseudo-hi-res mode. A few ZX81-related utils
(including a tape reader) and PD games are included.

Note that, due to an uncertain legal situation, the
ROMs must now be obtained separately.

From: Thibault Godouet <fcron@free.fr>
Subject: Fcron 1.1.0 - a replacement for Vixie cron and anacron
Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 20:37:00 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

What is new in this release (1.1.0) ?
- -------------------------------------

- - The binary format of the binary fcrontabs has changed : there is now no more
need to reinstall the fcrontabs when upgrading fcron (but you need to convert
your fcrontabs to the new format once), and this format should allow
   extensions without losing any information.

- - better management of the errors in load/save fcrontabs functions.

- - the doc is a clearer about @-lines.

- - more security tests by fcrontab in the case it is suid root (but, if
possible, it should be suid fcron as it is far more secure).

- - we know remove unwanted fcrontabs before loading them in memory : well,
it seems to be more logical like that :)) .

- - bug fix : using options first with a &-line may have led to some problems
during the first read by fcron (mail send erroneously if noticenotrun was
used, bad set of the first execution's time and date or immediate execution
if bootrun was set : in fact, the line was not recognized as a new line).

- - bug fix : fcron used not to be able to be compiled from any directory because
of an absent -I. line option for the compiler (the config.h file was not
   found).

What is fcron ?
- ---------------

Fcron is a scheduler. It aims at replacing Vixie Cron, so it implements most
of its functionalities.

But contrary to Vixie Cron, fcron does not need your system to be up 7 days
a week, 24 hours a day : it also works well with systems which are
not running neither all the time nor regularly (contrary to anacrontab).

In other words, fcron does both the job of Vixie Cron and anacron, but does
even more and better :)) ...

To do so, fcron allows you to use the standard mode in which you tell
it to execute one command at a given date and hour and to make it run
a command according to its time of execution, which is normally the same as
system up time. For example :

Run the task 'save /home/ directory'
every 3h15 of system up time.

and, of course, in order to make it really useful, the time remaining until
next execution is saved each time the system is stopped.

You can also say :

run that command once between 2am and 5am

which will be done if the system is running at any time in this interval.

Fcron also includes a useful system of options, which can be applied
either to
every lines following the declaration or to a single line. Some of
the supported options permit to:
- - run jobs one by one,
- - set the max system load average value under which the job should be run,
- - set a nice value for a job,
- - run jobs at fcron's startup if they should have been run
      during system down time,
- - mail user to tell him a job has not run and why,
- - a better management of the mailing of outputs ...

What is planed for next releases ?
- ----------------------------------

I'd like to :
- - add PAM support.
- - allow users to have several fcrontabs.
(I wonder if it is really necessary : what do you think
about it ? Please mail me answers at fcron@free.fr )
- - allow users to control their running jobs (renice, stop,
       continue ...)

(propositions and help are welcome)

How you can help me
- -------------------

I especially need help for testing every fcron functionalities.
If you'd like to help me, please contact me at :
            fcron@free.fr

Where can I get it ?
- --------------------

You can either go to the project home page at :

http://fcron.free.fr

or get it from seul.org at

ftp://ftp.seul.org/pub/fcron/fcron-1.1.0.src.tar.gz (118kB)

I hope you will enjoy it,

Thibault.

From: Hans Zoebelein <hzo@gmx.de>
Subject: Emacspeak-14.0 (TopDog) Unleashed!
Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 20:33:24 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

               Emacspeak-14.0 (TopDog) Unleashed!
               ----------------------------------

For Immediate Release:

San Jose, Calif., (May 4, 2001)
    Emacspeak-2001++: Speech-enabling The Semantic WWW
--Zero cost of ownership makes priceless software affordable!

Emacspeak Inc (NASDOG: ESPK) --http://emacspeak.sourceforge.net--
announces the immediate world-wide availability of Emacspeak 14.0 --a
powerful audio desktop for leveraging today's evolving semantic WWW.

Investors Note:
- ---------------

With several prominent analysts recently initiating coverage, NASDOG:
ESPK is now trading over the net at levels close to that recently
attained by last year's DogCom high-fliers.

What Is It?
- -----------

Emacspeak is a fully functional audio desktop that provides complete
eyes-free access to all major 32 and 64 bit operating environments. By
seamlessly blending all aspects of the Internet such as Web-surfing
and electronic messaging into the audio desktop, Emacspeak enables
speech access to local and remote information with a consistent and
well-integrated user interface. A rich suite of task-oriented tools
provides efficient speech-enabled access to the evolving semantic
WWW. With support for the freely downloadable IBM ViaVoice TTS
(Outloud) speech synthesis engine, Emacspeak now turns Linux into the
first zero-cost Internet access solution for blind and visually
impaired users.

Major Enhancements:
- -------------------

 1: XML Authoring Using XAE.
2: Form-based Editting Of Audtory Display Settings.
 3: Semantic Support Within JDE.
4: Programmable hotlists via url templates.
5: Utilities to progressively filter text.
6: Overlaying Grids On Tabulated Information.
 7: Speech-enables EShell.
 8: Speech-enables Emacs 21 packages.
 9: Speech-enables dictionary server access.
10: Speech-enables Emacs IRC client ERC.

See the NEWS file for additional details. The Emacspeak source
distribution now includes a structured FAQ list designed to introduce
new and old users to the Emacspeak environment.

Opening Doors To A Windows-Free Millennium:
- -------------------------------------

Emacspeak is now voluntarily bundled with all major Linux
distributions. The integrity of the Emacspeak codebase is ensured by
the reliable and secure Linux platform used to develop the software.
Extensive studies have shown that thanks to these features, users
consider Emacspeak to be absolutely priceless. Thanks to this
wide-spread user demand, the present version is being made available
at the same zero cost as earlier releases.

At the same time, Emacspeak-2001 continues to innovate in the area of
speech interaction and carries forward the well-established Open
Source tradition of introducing user interface features that
eventually show up in commercial user environments. On this theme,
when once challenged by a proponent of a crash-prone but well-marketed
windowing system with the assertion "Emacs is a system from the 70's",
the creator of Emacspeak expressed surprise at the unusual candor
manifest in the assertion that it would take popular idiot-proof
interfaces until the year 2070 to catch up to where the Emacspeak
audio desktop is today. Upon hearing this, the said proponent of the
crash-prone system turned blue in the face (screen), crashed to the
floor and refused to get booted (ever again).

Industry experts welcomed this refreshing breath of Courage Certainty
and Clarity (CCC) at a time when users are reeling from the Fear
Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) unleashed by complex software systems
backed by even more convoluted press releases.

Independent Test Results:
- -------------------------

Independent test results have proven that unlike some modern software,
Emacspeak can be easily uninstalled without adversely affecting the
continued performance of the computer. These same tests also revealed
that once uninstalled, the user stopped functioning altogether.
Speaking with Aster Labrador, the creator of Emacspeak once pointed
out that these results re-emphasize the user-centric design of
Emacspeak; "It is the user --and not the computer-- that stops
functioning when Emacspeak is uninstalled!".

Note from Aster and Bubbles:
- ----------------------------

(UnDoctored Videos Inc. is currently looking for volunteers to
star in a video demonstrating such complete user failure).

Obtaining Emacspeak:
- --------------------

Emacspeak can be downloaded from sourceforge via HTTP or FTP:
http://emacspeak.sourceforge.net
ftp://emacspeak.sourceforge.net/pub/emacspeak You can visit
Emacspeak on the WWW at
http://www.cs.cornell.edu/home/raman/emacspeak (Cornell) --You
can also pick up emacspeak via anonymous ftp from
ftp://ftp.cs.cornell.edu/pub/raman/emacspeak/.

Note that in my experience the the sourceforge site is more
reliable than the Cornell site due to the operating system
each site has chosen to run.

You can subscribe to the emacspeak mailing list
emacspeak@cs.vassar.edu by sending mail to the list request address
emacspeak-request@cs.vassar.edu. The latest development snapshot of
Emacspeak is available via anonymous CVS from sourceforge.

History:
- --------

Emacspeak-14.0 --code named TopDog--is the first release of this
millennium in a continuing a series of award-winning audio
desktop releases from Emacspeak Inc. Emacspeak-13.0 --codenamed
YellowLab-- was the closing release of the 20th. century.
Emacspeak-12.0 --code named GoldenDog-- began leveraging the
evolving semantic WWW to provide task-oriented speech access to
Webformation. Emacspeak-11.0 --code named Aster-- went the final
step in making Linux a zero-cost Internet access solution for
blind and visually impaired users. Emacspeak-10.0 --(AKA
Emacspeak-2000) code named WonderDog-- continued the tradition of
award-winning software releases designed to make eyes-free
computing a productive and pleasurable experience. Emacspeak-9.0
- --(AKA Emacspeak 99) code named BlackLab-- continued to innovate
in the areas of speech interaction and interactive
accessibility. Emacspeak-8.0 --(AKA Emacspeak-98++) code named
BlackDog-- was a major upgrade to the speech output extension to
Emacs.

Emacspeak-95 (code named Illinois) was released as OpenSource on
the Internet in May 1995 as the first complete speech interface
to UNIX workstations. The subsequent release, Emacspeak-96 (code
named Egypt) made available in May 1996 provided significant
enhancements to the interface. Emacspeak-97 (Tennessee) went
further in providing a true audio desktop. Emacspeak-98
integrated Internetworking into all aspects of the audio desktop
to provide the first fully interactive speech-enabled WebTop.

About Emacspeak:
- ----------------

Based at Cornell (NY) http://www.cs.cornell.edu/home/raman --home
to Auditory User Interfaces (AUI) on the WWW-- Emacspeak is
mirrored world-wide by an international network of software
archives and bundled voluntarily with all major Linux
distributions. On Monday, April 12, 1999, Emacspeak became part
of the Smithsonian's Permanent Research Collection on Information
Technology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American
History.

The Emacspeak mailing list is archived at Vassar --the home of the

cms - a Configuration Management Shell and 3D Filesystem

Hello,

I am pleased to announce a new release of my prototype configuration
management shell, cms. This takes the form of a (limited) shell
which allows the user to simply save the current filesystem state.
This is not a Version Control system, so there is no check-in and
check-out transaction - the design goal has been the management of
a set of files (a configuration) and transparency. Hopefully/
eventually, the user will not notice that there is a configuration
management system in use.

I/O mimic routines (e.g. fopen() etc), are written allowing the
programmer to interface to the 3D Filesystem (which implements the
configuration management funtionality) cms is a simple example of
the use of a 3D Filesystem.

It has been developed solely using the Linux/Gnu operating system, and
is itself available under the GPL.

Cheers,
martin

From: ERDI Gergo <cactus@cactus.rulez.org>
Subject: Guikachu 0.5 "Csirke/Linux" - PalmOS resource file editor for GNOME
Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 20:35:19 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Dear users of both large and small computing tools,

A new release of Guikachu is available.

About Guikachu
- --------------
Guikachu is a GNOME application for graphical editing of resource
files for PalmOS-based pocket computers (get it?). It is written by
Gergő Érdi <cactus@cactus.rulez.org>. Check out
http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu/ for up-to-date informations.

Catch it all from http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu/

About this release
- ------------------
The main new feature of this release is the ability to position
widgets in the Form Editor with dragging them around with the
pointer. The Form Editor is also becoming more and more
feature-complete as new widgets are implemented in every release.

New features:
        * A real nasty bug made the `Save changes?' dialog displayed
when closing a changed document useless when the file has
not been given a name before. It is fixed now.
        * Drag & Drop support: You can move the widgets in the Form
Preview around (just click & hold the mouse button #1)
        * Some of the non-trivial properties have tooltips to guide you
        * Fixed support for Button widgets (the frame type was not
          saved/loaded)
        * New supported widgets: push button, selector trigger, check box
        * Better size approximations for automatic heights
        * A small build-time fix by Murray Cumming <murrayc@usa.net>
        * Tons of under-the-hood improvements

Guikachu uses GTK-- and GNOME-- for its user interface. File I/O is
implemented with the libxml package. Dialog windows are loaded via
libglade. You will need the versions of these packages available in
the GNOME 1.4 bundle (with the exception of GNOME-- which you will
need to upgrade to version 1.1.17)
To actually create the PalmOS resource files, you will also need PilRC
(part of the GNU PalmOS SDK) to compile the .rpc files produced by
Guikachu.

Beware of bugémons!

From: Alexandre Duret-Lutz <duret_g@epita.fr>
Subject: Heroes 0.10 - a game like Nibbles or Tron
Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 20:37:13 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I am pleased to announce the release of Heroes 0.10.

Heroes is similar to the "Tron" and "Nibbles" games of yore, but
includes many graphical improvements and new game features.
In it, you must maneuver a small vehicle around a world and collect
powerups while avoiding obstacles, your opponents' trails, and even
your own trail.

There are five game modes available. Quest is the classical
Nibbles, in Death Match you start with very long tails a must kill your
opponents, in Kill'em All you must run over lemmings moving on the
ground, in Time Cash or Color modes you must collect money or pyramids
of color. Heroes features 12 original sound tracks, 94 levels (in 10
different tile sets) plus a level editor.

You are invited to visit the following links:
  home page: http://heroes.sourceforge.net/
  screenshots: http://heroes.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html
  download: http://heroes.sourceforge.net/download.html

Note: this is a source code release, the `download' page also lists
binary packages which might not be up-to-date yet.

NEWS in this version include:
  - German and Italian messages
  - support for global configuration files
  - scores/saved games/preferences written as text files
  - better relocation support
See the NEWS file for details, there have been more changes not
worth to list here.

HELP! Heroes development is open to anyone and we welcome any
contribution. In the hypothetical case you would like to spend some
time on the source code and don't know what to do, please, ask the
mailing list: there is presently some (non-boring) tasks that are
needed and for which understanding the full source tree is not a
prerequisite.
