What to bring?
* Computers that you have Linux questions about?
A computer with RedHat 7.0 + patches will be on-site for
questions.
* Computers that you'd like to have a major distribution
loaded. Must be able to do a CDROM installation. Any
information on the computer must be backed up in case
something goes dreadfully wrong.
* Bring: monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU and a chair. We have
a large room, but it lacks chairs!
* Some basic brainfood: pizza & soda will be provided.

Subject: loopslack - slackware install tool with loop support
Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 23:57:06 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
There's no linux packages or distribution at the site below, you
need to have or get a slackware linux distribution on cdrom.
There's a number of places you can get a slackware linux
distribution on cdrom for as little as $2.
What you'll find here is the means to install a slackware
linux distribution from cdrom or hard drive (see installing
linux below).
The rootdisk "loopslak.bin" below, is based on the rootdisk
"color.gz" from slackware 7.2 current.
The rootdisk now has ext3 and reiserfs (from kernel v2.4.1
or later) filesystem support.
The rootdisk also has umsdos and loop linux support, you can
create a linux system with a ext2, ext3, or reiserfs filesystem
on a dos/win9x partition, and boot it from there.
The loop linux system can't be larger than 2000mb, you can
enlarge or reduce the size of the system after you create it.
# loop_resize "From the rootdisk!"
The rootdisk can also be used as a rescue system, it has been
updated and changed, but should work with any existing slackware
bootdisks.
Read CHANGES below for more changes.
The present slackware bootdisks don't have ext3 or reiserfs support.
If you want a bootdisk with support for either of them, you would
have to create it yourself.
This is an example of how to write a slackware boot and root
disk to a 1.44mb formatted floppy, under dos and linux.
Create boot floppy!
C:\ rawrite2 bare.i a:
# dd if=bare.i of=/dev/fd0
Create root floppy!
C:\ rawrite2 loopslak.bin a:
# dd if=loopslak.bin of=/dev/fd0
You can get slackware bootdisks at the slackware site or
on the slackware cdrom in the bootdsks.144 directory.

Subject: IPTraf 2.4.0 Released
Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 00:00:13 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hello all,
I'm pleased to announce the release of IPTraf 2.4.0.
IPTraf is a console-based IP network monitoring utility. It shows various
statistics, including TCP connection figures, network interface loads, LAN
host loads and counts, TCP/UDP port staistics and others.
This new version relaxes multiple instances, so you can now monitor more
than one
interface using the multiple instances of the same facility in different
processes. You can now also log to custom log files. In addition to
that, you can also opt to display source MAC addresses in the IP traffic
monitor, and the LAN station monitor now recognizes /etc/ethers.
This version also fixes a bug in rvnamed which can crash your system if
the DNS server goes down while you are monitoring a very busy network.
A setup script has also been included.
Users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to the new version.

Subject: new apsfilter version 6.1.0
Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 00:00:39 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I'm pleased to announce the new apsfilter version 6.1.0.
Apsfilter is a magic printfilter, that allows you to print different document
types "automagically" without having to convert them manually into something
which is understood by your lineprinter. Apsfilter development started in 1993,
so apsfilter is now a mature and powerful printing solution for any flavour of
Unix running lpd or LPRng as line printer scheduler.
Apsfilter supports lots of file and compression types. Its even possible to
print compressed documents. Apsfilter supports printing on local as well as
on Appletalk-, Unix- and Windows remote printers.
General and "per printer-queue" based config files allow you to configure
the printer for your needs. Additionally lpr commandline options, -C for
lpd and -Z for LPRng, allow you to change printing parameters like print
quality, orientation, duplex mode, etc... "on the fly" without having to
reconfigure any config file.
A SETUP script helps you to test various supported ghostscript drivers prior
installation. SETUP finally makes the necessary entries in /etc/printcap,
creates spool directories and apsfilter default config files as needed.
A handbook in HTML is now available. Support only via apsfilter mailinglists,
see homepage !
See the download page, how to download the new version 6.1.0.

Subject: SECURITY: NSA Security-enhanced Linux updated
Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 00:01:07 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
An updated release of Security-enhanced Linux was made available on
16 March 2001. Security-enhanced Linux incorporates a strong, flexible
mandatory access control architecture into the major subsystems of the
Linux kernel. The system provides a mechanism to enforce the separation
of information based on confidentiality and integrity requirements.
This allows threats of tampering and bypassing of application security
mechanisms to be addressed and enables the confinement of damage that
can be caused by malicious or flawed applications. The SELinux web
site (www.nsa.gov/selinux) contains background information,
documentation, source code, and archives for the selinux mailing-list.
Recent changes include:
- - Support for kernels 2.4.2 and 2.2.18.
- - New System V IPC mandatory access controls in kernel 2.2.18. These
controls have not yet been ported to the 2.4 kernel series.
- - Modified utilities based on more recent base versions.
- - A number of bug-fixes and enhancements.

AN ENTERPRISE SOLUTION
Spring Implementation Conference to Be Held in San Jose, CA May 13-17, 2001
March 16, 2001 (Chatsworth, CA) --- 101communications, a privately-held
company dedicated to the acquisition and operation of specialized IT media
and information services, has announced the creation of the Enterprise Linux
Institute (ELXI) to provide in-depth, high quality education and training in
the Enterprise Linux marketplace. The announcement is 101communications'
latest move in their ongoing effort to establish a fully integrated presence
in support of Linux in the enterprise, and underscores its commitment to
provide information and services critical to the IT professional in the form
of publications, conferences, seminars and the Web.
Co-sponsored by Linux International, ELXI (www.elxi.com
<http://www.elxi.com>) will hold its first conference in San Jose, CA from
May 13-17, 2001, where delegates will have the opportunity to enroll in
educational Linux courses, listen to keynote addresses from Linux experts
such as Jon "Maddog" Hall and Miguel de Icaza, attend panelist debates,
developer workshops and technical briefings and walk through an exhibit
floor featuring Linux International and top Linux vendors from around the
world.
"The Enterprise Linux Institute will offer members the opportunity to gain
valuable insight and knowledge about the rapidly changing Linux industry,"
said Marty Lieberman, Group General Manager of 101communications IT Events.
"The Institute will provide the forum for members to network, share ideas
and gain a competitive edge in deploying a Linux solution in the
enterprise."
The Institute is dedicated to educating business and information technology
professionals about the strategies, techniques and tools required to
successfully design, build, manage and maintain Linux platforms and
Linux-based applications and systems. In addition, the Institute will
promote the advancement of Linux research, knowledge transfer and the
professional development of its members. ELXI will sponsor and promote a
worldwide membership, periodic educational conferences, resource packed
publications, an in-depth research program and a comprehensive Web site.
The Institute recently released its technical program for the first Spring
Implementation Conference, featuring leading authorities and educators in
the Linux marketplace delivering full day conference content. This
conference and seminar format was popularized with 101communications' highly
successful Data Warehousing Institute, which has educated over 15,000
members in all aspects of data warehousing and business intelligence over
the past four years.
The Spring Implementation Conference will host the charter meeting of ELXI
members. Bringing together Linux industry notables including Jon "Maddog"
Hall, Executive Director of Linux International; Miguel De Icaza, Founder of
Gnome and CTO Ximian; Ross Brunson, Director of Instructor Operations of
SAIR Linux; David Farace, Alex T. Win and Jeremy Allison from VA Linux, and
Russell Pavlicek of Compaq, the ELXI Spring Implementation Conference
promises to be a hotbed of discussion and debate. Visit www.elxi.com

Subject: rp-pppoe 3.0 -- Robust PPPoE client for Linux, NetBSD, and Solaris
Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 00:01:57 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Version 3.0 of rp-pppoe has been released. It is the successor to 2.8.
rp-pppoe is a user-mode (and kernel mode, on Linux 2.4) client and
server for the Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet, a protocol used
by many ADSL service providers. It runs on standard Linux kernels
NetBSD and Solaris. rp-pppoe is released under the GNU General Public
License, and can be obtained from:
http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/
Changes from Version 2.8 to 3.0:
o Many small improvements to server. Server now only makes one
discovery socket, systemwide, with addition of "-n" option to pppoe.
o Fixes for compilation problems on BSD, Solaris and some Linux platforms.
o Added "-p" option to pppoe-server to allow you to specify a pool of
IP addresses to assign to clients.
o Added GUI system (tkpppoe). This work was funded by Iospan
Wireless, Inc. The GUI includes a Set-UID wrapper (pppoe-wrapper)
which allows ordinary users to control a link (if so authorized.)
I believe the wrapper script is secure, but please audit the
source code (gui/wrapper.c) if you have any concerns.
o Changes to scripts and pppoe.conf. DNS setup is now dynamic (happens
each time adsl-connect runs.)
o Made relay.c check packet lengths rigorously; made it throw out Ethernet
frame padding on session packets as well as discovery packets.
o MAJOR POLICY CHANGE: I used to invite people to send me debugging
dumps for analysis if their connection failed. Unfortunately, I no
longer have the time to do these analyses. The debugging output now
includes hints on how to interpret it. I am looking at ways to set
up a FAQ to assist people who are having problems, but I regret that
I cannot answer all requests for help myself.

Andamooka adds new books and improves book text searches.
New Books
Andamooka, the online open content library, is proud to host the
following books:
* [1]GNU Autoconf, Automake, and Libtool (New Riders) by Gary V.
Vaughan, Ben Elliston, Tom Tromey and Ian Lance Taylor. The
standard open source software source code distribution system is
based on the tools discussed in the book.
* [2]The CVS Book (Coriolis) by Karl Fogel. A complete introduction,
tutorial and reference to CVS (Concurrent Versions System).
* [3]Lessons In Electric Circuits by Tony Kuphaldt has been updated.
Issues discussed in the annotation have been addressed and many
other things have changed.
* [4]Professional Programmer's Guide to Fortran77 by Clive Page.
These books may be read (in full), annotated, and discussed on
Andamooka.
Improved Book Searches
Andamooka searches are now performed by an implementation of [5]LiSEn,
an open source, Perl-based search engine. The result is more relevant,
ranked hits, faster searches, and context cues to help identify the
best hits.
About Andamooka
[6]Andamooka is a collection of support/development communities for
open content books.
Andamooka's public forum helps bring together people with common
interests -- after all, they're all reading the same book! -- to
assist each other in studying, analyzing, or putting into practice the
content of the book.
The Open Content License, and GNU Free Documentation Licenses, and
similar license have the potential to dramatically change the way a
book is developed and is received by its readers, and Andamooka is
continually being improving to further explore and utilize the
freedoms granted by these licenses.
At Andamooka we want to get active readers together to discuss and
modify the work openly -- in a public forum -- so that issues of fact,
clarity, and content can be addressed and correct, useful additions
can be made to the main work. Because the licenses are relatively
unrestrictive, the modified work can then be redistributed so that
each reader can benefit from the work of the entire commmunity. In
this model, "open" books become dynamic and can be constantly current.
