Sub.: Sequel to the Linux pre-installation checklist
(mini HOWTO of the LDP)
You may be aware of the mini-HOWTO "Linux pre-installation checklist"
which is part of the official mini-HOWTOs of LDP. This mini-HOWTO is
a very popular tool, considering the number of visitors, and the
number of feedback messages I get every day, and the fact that it has
been translated into many languages.
I have now completed a sequel to this checklist -- called as the
"post-installation" checklist. The checklist is available for beta
tests and reviews, at:
http://algolog.tripod.com/postlnx.htm
The checklist includes a shell script which makes a backup snapshot
of your Linux installation. Please visit the above site, and send me
your comments and suggestions.
PS: Please send your comments and suggestions directly to me (not to the
mailing list) at algolog@hd1.vsnl.net.in

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
March the 12th, 2001
Dear Linux-Community,
in the last year we saw GRASS development flourish
and GIS technology getting more and more into the public focus.
GRASS is in a very good position
as the most powerful free software GIS running on GNU/Linux out there
together with its strong and healthy user base.
Still most people who use GIS do not know about GRASS or
have no idea of which high quality especially the new GRASS releases are.
That is why we are happy to announce
the formation of a new grass user group:
GRASS Anwender-Vereinigung e.V (GAV)
which is a tax-exempt charity organisation
located in Hannover, Germany.
The main focus of GAV will be on German speaking GRASS users.
Our intention was to found a legal entity which can
serve as an official meeting place for GRASS promotion.
It is a lot easier to ask for publicity or funding,
if you have a recognised organisation. We also hope to provide
a place where the public can get informed about GRASS
and free GIS in general.
It would be nice if we could be as successful as the German
TeX User Group "Dante e.V." which has done a great job in
securing the long term availability of TeX and LaTeX.
Our plans are to:
- prepare mailings to Universities
- promote GRASS in Germany at conferences
- create teaching materials and online courses
- collect money to fund GRASS development
We hope to make GAV to a valueable addition to the GRASS community.
If you are interested to become a member or want to know
more about GAV, check the webpages (mainly in Germany):
www.grass-verein.de
For the GAV founders,
March the 12th, 2001
Osnabr=FCck, Germany
Bernhard Reiter <bernhard@intevation.de>
What is GRASS?
- -------------
Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS)
is very powerful GIS which has seen almost 20 years of development.
It is used for data management, image processing, graphics production,
spatial modelling, and visualization of many types of data (raster and vector).
GRASS is free software released unter the GNU General Public License (GPL).
http://www.geog.uni-hannover.de/grass/
What is GIS?
- ------------
GIS stands for Geographic Information System.
In the strictest sense, a GIS is a computer system capable of assembling,
storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced
information , i.e. data identified according to their locations.
GIS offers new access to spatial data. GIS usage may answer questions
related to space as well as movement in space and time.
Almost all data relates to space and time. Therefore GIS technology
has many practical uses ranging from research to business.

Take a look at http://www.unixspace.com/context
This is an object DBMS ConteXt with an Internet access. If you click on
"Live connection" -> "connect as guest" you will connect to a real
database application.
DBMS ConteXt has an interesting technology connecting the client (user)
and the application. The client is using a standard Web browser.
Connection is accomplished by means of a Java applet which is loaded
from the database server. Java applet emulates a SSH protocol.
Differences from a standard java SSH/Telnet applets include:
1. ConteXt uses only one port (80) both for loading of the applet and
for communication.
2. ConteXt has an ability of not only operating in the alphanumeric
mode, but is also capable of drawing lines, circles, outputting GIF and
JPG images, use a programmed graphic color palette (64 colors), etc.
3. The applet has an ability to activate some Java classes by means of
Esc sequences coming from an application written in C/C++.
Thus ConteXt implements a GUI interface without the increase of traffic
for transmission of graphic information and ability to use Java AWT
classes directly from C/C++ applications.

Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 23:52:23 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The Simi-Conejo Linux Users Group will be holding LUGFest IV on April 21st and
22nd, 2001, in Simi Valley, California.
A LUGFest is an opportunity for Linux users to demo Linux (or other Open
Source operating systems), Linux applications, attend seminars, and BOF (Birds
Of a Feather) sessions. Additionally, Linux vendors may participate and
show off their wares.
LUGFest III was held on October 28, 2000, and was a great success.
(See http://www.sclug.org/members/notes.cgi?date=10-28-2000-LUGFest3).
Approximately 350 Linux enthusiasts and a number of vendors attended over the
course of the afternoon.
We had people come from Orange County, Santa Barbara, Santa Clarita, the
South Bay area, all points in between, and also from out-of-state. Many Linux
vendors donated stuff for giveways and raffles. Vendors who came with their
wares were VA Linux, SGI, LinuxCare, LinuxBoxen, Mandrake, Parasoft, VMware,
Cobolt, LinuxSolve, Corel, Loki Games, Cosmo Engineering and Andern.org
If you have a special skill with Linux or a Linux application, or if you're
a Linux vendor who would like to show off his products, SCLUG would love
to have you participate in LUGFest IV! SCLUG is also looking for speakers on
Linux, Open Source, or other related subjects.
Due to the continually growing attendance from LUGFest to LUGFest, we've
changed the LUGFest to a two-afternoon event so more people can attend.
For more info, to register for LFIV, or to volunteer to do a demo, contact
gareth@wiked.org, or visit http://www.lugfest.org

MIMEDefang 1.0 has been released under the GNU General Public License.
MIMEDefang is a MIME mail scanner designed to run on Linux or UNIX
systems, and intended mainly to protect Windows e-mail clients from
mail-borne viruses. It requires Sendmail 8.11 and is available from:
http://www.roaringpenguin.com/mimedefang
The previous version of MIMEDefang was 0.7. Changes since that version:
o Support for recent MIME::tools releases, including support for
uuencoded attachments.
o Support for the NAI virus scanner.
o Options to filter based on mail relay name or address. For example, you
could reject mail to certain addresses (e.g. all@mycorp.com) unless it
comes from your local mail relay.
o An option to limit the number of concurrent filter processes. This prevents
a flood of incoming mail from bringing your mail server to its knees.
o Many small bug fixes and improvements.

Subject: OpenScheme 1.3.6 available

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Erian Concept is glad to announce OpenScheme 1.3.6
SITE:
http://www.open-scheme.com
NEWS:
- - Process Manager
- - Windows 2000, FreeBSD 4.2 and BeOS 5 supported
- - Rollback, lock, transaction for the OpenScheme database
- - Traditional bug fixes
REGISTRATION
OpenScheme does not now require a license number to run. Therefore,
registration is required to obtain a free support.
WHAT IS OPEN-SCHEME ?
OpenScheme is a Scheme interpreter/compiler/debugger conform to the
R5RS standard (only scheme-report-environment, null-environment are
not supported)
It is available for Intel PC with Linux, BeOS [(r) Be, Inc], FreeBSD,
Solaris, or Windows [(R) Microsoft]. Since the user sees the same API
interface, cross-development is easy and immediate.
OpenScheme integrates a lot of interesting features, such as a regular
expression parser, object oriented system, CLOS based, console Object
Oriented interface, an standardized Operating System access, a
preemptive timer library that is thread compatible.
A low-level set of primitives and a OO graphical library are now
available. The OO graphical library is entirely written in Scheme. It
provides all the common Widgets.
OpenScheme is open to the net: A NET plugin provides all the necessary
functions to access to the net, such as Sockets, Crypt, Encode, Mail,
CGI, ...
A fully relational database engine is also provided in the
professional edition. It allows to handle any number of files, large
objects, objects with variable size, files larger than 4Go.
OpenScheme includes an interpreter that performs on-flow compilation
and a compiler that produces pure ANSI C. It also includes a command
line symbolic debugger.
OpenScheme allows to put in the same source file high level Object
Oriented code, standard Scheme, C and assembly (that breaks
portability). This feature provides an impressive power to the
development environment.
Therefore, OpenScheme does not have yet an integrated graphical user
interface. This is planned.
OpenScheme is commercially supported by:

OpenScheme is distributed in four editions:
- -Free WEB edition: fully functional interpreter version, with plain
HTML documentation. This version does not include the development
kit. It can be freely distributed (distributor may request a special
license number).
- -Standard edition: This version allows to have profits and to sold all
derivated products, royalties free. A technical support is provided by
Erian Concept.
- -Professional edition: This edition includes the paper manuals, the
OSD database engine. OSD is a native relational database kernel with
an unlimited number of simultaneously opened tables, wide files
(>4Go), variable length fields, b+tree indexes, memory tables, etc.
In addition, free updates for the next three minor and major releases

Subject: announcing Paranoid Backup
Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 23:55:09 GMT
Reply-To: av556@detroit.freenet.org
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Paranoid Backup is a backup program for Linux. Paranoid Backup
is designed to work with cheap tape drives and cheap tapes
without shoeshining or losing data; to never overwrite old
backups; and to use as few tapes as possible. It has easy to
understand documentation and error messages. It is probably
slower than other backup programs. Paranoid Backup includes
kxarc, an archive program, and a tape server program which can
be used by themselves. Conventional archive programs like tar
manage both the archive and the tape; I made one program to
manage the archive and a different program to manage the tape;
if you are working on tape interfaces, you may be interested in
how I did that. Everything is written in perl 5, so there is no
C source or compiled binaries, just these scripts.

Subject: xpppload-0.4: monitor a PPPoE-link
Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 23:53:37 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi!
I just did a new version of xpppload. xpppload does monitor a
PPPoE-links like xisdnload monitors an ISDN-link. It displays a
chart-like diagram of the link usage.
Version 0.4 adds handling of dial-on-demand status. I also did some
cleanup in the source code. I hope, it is easier to understand,
now. :-)
xpppload can be downloaded on
http://www.klebsch.de/xpppload-0.4.tar.gz
I am sorry, I cannot offer FTP download. :-(
73, Mario
