Subject: Procinfo 18 - system information utility
Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 12:05:29 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Keywords: procinfo, system info

Version 18 of procinfo has just been released.

Procinfo is a small program that gathers some system information from
diverse files under /proc and prints it to the screen. It duplicates
some of the functionality of free(1) and uptime(1). It should work
with any kernel release close to 1.0 or later up to the latest
development kernel. (Well, I haven't actually tried 1.0 for almost a
decade, but you get the idea.)

This release fixes some bugs and, I assume, introduces some new ones as
well. Think of it as a better'n'nothing release, or beta if you will.

Get it from:

        ftp.cistron.nl   /pub/people/svm
        metalab.unc.edu  /pub/Linux/system/status/ps
        tsx-11.mit.edu   /pub/linux/sources/usr.bin

Cheers,
Sander

Presentation : APL: Programming Power Tool for All
Presenter    : Robert G. Brown

If you think you cannot program, but want to, please come to this
presentation!

APL stands for "A Programming Language" and has several properties that
set it off from conventional programming tools. Originally developed as
a symbolic notation for building algorithms, APL supports the creation
of both general and compact code which, when properly employed, provides
performance comparable to that of C. In a language free of
declarations, arrays are handled in a fashion that is clear and a
natural outgrowth of the thinking that went into the design and
development of the language.

The state of APL programming systems for Linux has changed a good deal
in the last year, reflecting the growth in the use of Linux and the
continued utility of APL. In this presentation, we'll go over some of
the properties of APL, take a look at a few APL programs, and touch on a
number of areas where Linux and APL make an unbeatable technology
combination.

Robert Brown is a founding member and past chairman of KLUG, and has
over 25 years experience in software development in numerous
environments, disciplines, and industries. An intermittent user of UNIX
systems for over 10 years, Bob has developed applications with Linux in
the course of his professional and volunteer activities. He can also be
seen cycling the Kal-Haven trail, hiking the countryside in search of
nature photographs, or traveling to some fairly unusual places.

We meet weekly, each Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Our meeting site is Room 4202
of Dunbar Hall on the campus of Western Michigan University.

From: OpenCountry <oc@opencountry.org>
Subject: Open Country Opens Linux Application Store with QwikClick
Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 12:09:57 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Open Country (http://www.opencountry.net) started an open source
distribution effort, a new facility for making open-source software
available to a wider range of people, and with simplified
installation. We're counting on Linux usage increasing, not only in the
specialized markets of servers, appliances, and the technically proficient,
but also among "mere mortals," who will want the advantages of better
operating software stability, increased choices for support, and the other
advantages of open-source code. Unfortunately, that often required a
technically proficient person to install the application.

Open Country helps the less technical to use and enjoy Linux by repackaging
open-source software in an easy install, QwikClick(tm), format. The base
application remains unchanged. It's like putting the application on a CD
for distribution, except that it will be downloaded and installed over the
internet. A user will be able to subscribe to the store, and as a
subscriber obtain and install a variety of common applications or games
with only one click. A nominal fee is charged for the install convenience
and a part of the revenue obtained is sent back to the open-source
developer or his designated charity.

Consider this an open-source effort, check out our web site,
http://www.opencountry.net, and tell us your reactions. If you have
authored an open-source product that you'd like us to consider for
nonexclusive redistribution, send us email at developers@opencountry.org.

WWWppp is a Web frontend to ppp-on and ppp-off. All that is needed
to initiate the PPP internet link from the client hosts is your favorite
web browser. It is suitable for small home networks using a single dialup
internet connection.

On the main page of WWWppp, the user is informed about the current state of
the PPP link. If the link is up, the hostnames of the hosts that are currently
needing the internet connection are listed. Below, there are links to
refresh the display, to start up the PPP connection ("I need internet [too]")
and to stop it ("I don't need internet anymore"). Multiple hosts are
supported. The hostnames from where the internet connection was requested
are stored in a DBM database file.
The PPP link is started when the first host requests to use internet.
It is kept up until no other host needs internet anymore. If the connection
fails for some reason, the list of hosts that need internet (DBM file)
is cleared.

WWWppp speaks german and english via URL parameter 'lang' (de, en).
The package uses PHP4 and the apache webserver.

XBSQL: An SQL Wrapper for the XBase library
- -------------------------------------------

Xbase DBMS (http://www.startech.keller.tx.us/xbase.html)
is a C++ library which supports access to Xbase type datafiles
and indexes (ie., .dbf and related files). It provides
access at the record level to these files.

XBSQL is a wrapper library which provides an SQL-subset interface
to Xbase DBMS, built against xbase-1.8.1. This is the first release, so
various things are still missing, however I think there is now
sufficient functionality to make the library useful. In particular,
the documentation is a bit thin. There is a simple command-line client
xql which can be used as an example

Documentation, such as it is, can be seen at

http://www.quaking.demon.co.uk/xbsql.manual

XBSQL currently supports:

* create table tabname (column1, .....)
* drop table tabname
* insert into tabname values (expr1, ...)
* insert into tabname (column1, ...) values (expr1, ...)
* select expr1, ... from table1, ... where condition1, ... order by order1,
....
* update tabname set col1 = expr1, ... where condition1, ...
* delete from tabname where condition1, ...

XBSQL supports expression names and table aliases, so you can SQL
queries like:

* select T1.a as Total1, T2.b
        as Total2 from MyTable T1, MyTable T2
        where T1.x = T2.y

XBSQL also supports single-column .ndx indexes, hence the
following indexes the i and t columns. The
library can make use of these indexes for simple join cases.

* create table tabname (i integer index, t char(80) index)

The following list contains SQL features that are currently missing. This
should not be read as meaning that anything not listed is implemented!

* Aggregate functions, including count(*)
* group by and having
* subselects
* create table tabname as ....
* alter table tabname ....

XBSQL can be downloaded as source from

ftp://195.92.31.34/pub/xbsql-0.1/xbsql-0.1.tgz

All comments, feedback and bug reports welcome, please send to

mike@quaking.demon.co.uk</A>.

This library has been developed with the support of theKompany.com
(http://www.thekompany.com) and will be includedin the KDE-DB libraries
(see http://www.thekompany.com/projects/kdb)

Mike Richardson

Subject: Xforge 0.2.1 - a wave editor
Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 12:11:20 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Xforge 0.2.1, a graphical wave editor, is available.

Xforge needs X11R5 on Unix, Motif (Lesstif also works but you may have
some problems), and OSS compatible audio drivers for audio output.
Version 0.2.1 compiles and runs on (with or without audio support):

    o HP-UX 10.20 (parisc)
    o IRIX 6.3 (mips)
    o Solaris 2.6 (sparc)
    o SuSE Linux 6.3 (alpha)
    o Unixware 7.0.1 (i386)

Xforge used to work on following platforms (they have not been tested
lately):

    o AIX 4.3.1.0 (rs6000)
    o Digital Unix 4.0 (alpha)
    o FreeBSD 2.2.6-RELEASE (i386)
    o NetBSD 1.4.2 (sparc)

Version 0.2.1 fixes several portability issues, adds AIFF and AIFF-C
support and some improvement to user interface.

Xforge source is available on the Xforge web site:

Subject: Guikachu 0.2 "geoff" - PalmOS resource file editor
Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 12:11:13 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Dear users of both large and small computing tools,

A brand new week, with a brand new Guikachu! It can't get any better can
it?

Guikachu is a GNOME application for graphical editing of resource
files for PalmOS-based pocket computers (get it?).

Catch it all from http://cactus.rulez.org/projects/guikachu/

This is your typical `release often' release: I've checked some of the
todo items, and decided to create a new release. At this rate, no more
than 241679762 releases will be needed before 1.0.

New features:
        * Per-application resources (e.g. version number, vendor ID)
          (double-click on the root tree item in the main window)
        * `Help' attribute of dialog resources (properly linked to the
          string resource it references)

About the release name:
        I was looking for code name ideas, and asked around on
        #linux.hu, when a fellow iRCer solved my problem:
        <geoff> Cactus why not "geoff"?
        Indeed. Why not?

Guikachu uses GTK-- and GNOME-- for its user interface. File I/O is
implemented with the libxml package. Dialog windows are loaded via
libglade. You will need the versions of these packages available in
the GNOME 1.4 bundle.
To actually create the PalmOS resource files, you will also need PilRC
(part of the GNU PalmOS SDK) to compile the .rpc files produced by
Guikachu.

Beware of bugémons!

        Cactus
