PRESS RELEASE:

( BW)(NY-IBM)(IBM) IBM Propels Linux for Real E-business; Announces
Multi-Million Dollar Investment In Linux Services

    Business Editors
    LinuxWorld 2001

    NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 2001--IBM today announced a range
of new Linux(1) services as well as plans to invest more than $300 million
in additional Linux services over the next three years. The services are
designed to help customers install and implement commercial e-business
solutions using Linux.
The company also announced hardware and software technologies for
Linux, including plans for the IBM eServer x430, designed as the first
64-way server that will run the new Linux Application Environment (LAE).
This new software provides today's Linux applications with additional
scalability to better handle business growth.
"In my experience, service and support are among the key drivers that
will help make customers comfortable with running Linux in commercial
business environments," said Dan Kusnetzky, IDC's vice president of system
software research. "By providing superior services and support, IBM is
clearly helping Linux move into the mainstream from its current position as
the platform for technical, academic and service provider applications."
Other announcements at Linux World Conference and Expo include:

- -- Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Systems will install Linux on an IBM
eServer z900 to manage massive email databases for its customers by running
hundreds of Linux partitions;
- -- Linux-based network processor software development tools and services
for Internet service providers and networking equipment vendors that enable
greater bandwidth and other network functions;
- -- Domino Workflow on Linux, software that enables customers to easily
build, modify, and improve business processes such as employee hiring and
customer relationship management by streamlining and automating
interactions;
- -- Plans to expand Linux support for Tivoli Systems management software,
building on a broad portfolio of Tivoli Linux-based offerings;
- -- IBM Director for advanced systems management software available on
Linux for the IBM eServer xSeries product line, including a "self healing"
feature to predict server failures;
- --  Availability of the NetVista Thin Client, the N2200l, running Linux;
and
- -- Linux-certified IntelliStation(R) Z Pro workstations based on Intel's
new 64-bit Itanium processor.

"In the year since IBM embraced Linux as key to the evolution of
e-business, our customers have rapidly adopted Linux in real e-business
solutions. Linux is now ready for real e-business," said Irving
Wladawsky-Berger, IBM vice president of technology and strategy, Server
Group. "Now, in addition to providing top to bottom Linux support for our
hardware and software, we're investing in Linux services so that IBM can
assure our customers that the level of support they have come to expect for
their enterprise computing environments will be available for Linux."

    Extending Services

IBM will strengthen its services commitment to Linux by investing more
than $300 million in building new Linux services during the next three
years. Some of these services include: Linux e-business enablement and
migration services to help customers rapidly deploy and optimize
Linux-based e-business environments on a wide variety of IBM and non-IBM
platforms; Open Source Consulting for the Linux environment to help educate
customers interested in Linux about Open Source Computing and the Open
Source Community; and Web and High Availability Cluster Services to help
customers design, implement and support Linux clusters for Internet and
enterprise wide, mission-critical applications. IBM will also broaden its
services relationships through an international technical support agreement
with SuSE, building on existing agreements with Red Hat and Linuxcare. As
part of that agreement, SuSE will help IBM Global Services address
customers' Linux and open source concerns such as code issues for SuSE
Linux.

    Unveiling A New Linux Server

IBM unveiled plans today for the IBM eServer x430, a powerful 64-way
server designed to bridge the gap between smaller Intel-based platforms and
the mainframe. The x430 will be the first enterprise server designed to
take full advantage of the new Linux Application Environment (LAE), which
provides additional scalability to today's Linux applications. Utilizing
the x430 and LAE, customers will be able to scale from an Intel
Uni-processor server all the way to the mainframe and maintain the
reliability and interoperability of proven eServer technology. To further
support the LAE, IBM has opened a U.S.-based Linux Competency Center in
Beaverton, Oregon to enable ISV's to test applications running on the LAE.

    Supporting Linux Solutions

-- IBM unveiled an integrated suite of Linux-based software
development tools and services that support the IBM PowerNP
network processor. ISPs and networking equipment vendors can
now increase network bandwidth and functionality by developing
programming code for communications gear based on the IBM
PowerNP network processor. The development tools can be used
to cut months off the software development cycle for routers
    and other networking gear.

-- Tivoli currently delivers key capabilities such as
performance, software distribution, storage and security
management on Linux and plans to expand the scope of Linux
offerings throughout the year, with increased support for the
Tivoli Management Environment. Tivoli products that support
    Linux include:

-- Tivoli Management Environment, which unifies, simplifies
and automates the management of networks, databases,
    applications, and the Internet;

-- Tivoli Storage Manager, an end-to-end systems management
solution that helps customers automate network backup,
    manage storage, and provide disaster recovery functions;

-- Tivoli SANergy, which provides management of storage area
    networks; and

-- Tivoli SecureWay Policy Director, which enables quick
deployment of secure Web applications by controlling
access to applications and data retrieved from Web
    browsers to Web devices.

-- Lotus will now offer Domino Workflow on the Linux platform.
The software will provide Linux users with access to adaptive
workflow management services and tools for Web applications.
Domino Workflow leverages the inherent benefits of the Lotus
Domino platform including security, messaging and Web browser
support, making it an ideal solution for creating a wide range
of applications that run on Linux.

-- IBM is also making the WebSphere Commerce Suite Start Edition
available on SuSE and TurboLinux, in addition to Red Hat
Linux. These announcements come on the heels of IBM's
introduction of WebSphere Personalization on Linux, which
allows customers to build tailored web pages that attract,
    engage and retain users.

I'd like to post this to linux announce.

Thanks.

===========================================================================
These are the rootdisks (color.gz and umsdos.gz) from
slackware 7.2 current.

The rootdisk color.gz now has ext3 and reiserfs
(v3.6.x from kernel v2.4 or later) filesystem
support.

The rootdisk umsdos.gz has umsdos and loop linux support,
you can create a linux system with a ext2, ext3, or reiserfs
filesystem on a dos/win9x partition, and boot it from there.

The loop linux system can't be larger than 2000mb, you can
enlarge or reduce the size of the system after you create it.

# loop_resize "From the umsdos.gz rootdisk!"

The above rootdisks can also be used as a rescue system, they
have been updated and changed, but should work with any existing
slackware bootdisks.

The present slackware bootdisks don't have ext3 or reiserfs support.
If you want a bootdisk with support for either of them, you would
have to create it yourself.

This is an example of how to write a slackware boot and root
disk to a 1.44mb formatted floppy, under dos and linux.

c:\ rawrite bare.i a: "Boot disk!"
c:\ rawrite umsdos.gz a: "Root disk!"

# dd if=bare.i of=/dev/fd0
# dd if=umsdos.gz of=/dev/fd0

You can get them here.

ftp://ftp.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/slakdisks

color.gz 1329kb
umsdos.gz 1389kb

You can get slackware bootdisks at the slackware site.

Presenter : Dirk Bartley

HylaFAX is a server application capable of sending faxes and
alphanumeric pages. As a network service, it allows fax modems to
reside on a single machine and network clients can then submit an
outbound job from any machine on a network. Faxes can also be received
and then printed or e-mailed. Open source fax client programs are
freely available for the Unix, Mac, and Windows platforms. If you're
interested in an open source fax service, come on Tuesday the 6th to
learn about HylaFAX.

Dirk graduated in 1991 from Western Michigan University with a degree in
Electrical Engineering. He is currently employed as a Systems
Administrator at Schupan Aluminum Sales. There he administers the
corporate network using a system running Red Hat Linux. In his spare
time Dirk enjoys playing hockey, taking his dog for a walk, using Linux
and learning about how software can be used to benefit people.

We meet weekly, each Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Our meeting site is Room 4202

Subject: UPDATE: striptemplate critical update
Date: Fri, 9 Feb 2001 20:49:06 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Everyone that is using my striptemplate tool is asked to upgrade
immediately. Version 1.02 fixes a nasty bug present in 1.00 and 1.01. It
would delete a valid configuration file when processing a template. The
program is designed to not overwrite an existing configuration file, forcing
you to delete it first. However, a bug caused the application to notify you
of the problem, but then deleted your configuration file anyway! This is
obviously a serious flaw, and affects both the Windows and Linux versions.
All users should upgrade immediately.

The 1.01 version creates the output file with the same access and ownership
permissions as the input template file. This was an oversight in the 1.00
version. This change only affects UNIX systems, not NT.

Updates can be downloaded from my web site at:

http://www.toddtown.com/family/todd/linux/index.html

Sorry,

Todd

Ganymede is a GPL'ed metadirectory system. Ganymede provides support
for concurrent, team-based management of network directory services.
It features a multithreaded database server with support for plug-in
Java classes to customize the structure, management, and distribution
of network directory data. Ganymede allows large groups of
administrators to share administrative control over designated
portions of a master network directory database, and provides
transactional reliability and intelligent constraint management to
keep network directories consistent. Ganymede keeps complete audit
trails for all activity and can send email notification of relevant
directory changes to every member of your admin team, keeping
administrative teams coordinated and effective. Ganymede's
sophisticated graphical user interface is designed to provide a high
enough level of ease and safety of use to allow even relatively
untrained users to make changes to the directory database.

Ganymede has been designed and implemented over a five year period to
act as the glue that holds your admin teams and your directory
services together.

                                  --

It has been just over a year since the last widely publicized release
of the Ganymede directory management system. During that time, ARL:UT
has been using Ganymede in production full-time, with more than 50
administrators sharing administrative privileges over our laboratory's
NIS, DNS, Samba, Windows NT, LDAP, Sendmail, and tacacs services.

Development during the last year has been extremely active, as we have
pushed to make Ganymede ready for the world. This release of Ganymede
is far faster, far more stable, far more memory efficient, far better
documented, and far more complete than any previous release.

This release meets all of the architectural goals I have been working
towards for 1.0. Bulk editing through a high-speed XML client is in,
and there is now clean separation between the base Ganymede
distribution and the schema kits which customize Ganymede for a given
network environment. Interested parties can now author, maintain, and
distribute their own network directory toolkits for use with Ganymede.

We are also releasing the first schema kit for use with the 1.0 series
Ganymede distribution. The Ganymede userKit provides user and group
account management with support for synchronizing both user and group
accounts to your Windows NT PDC, as well as support for UNIX passwd
and group files, using either crypt() or md5Crypt()-hashed passwords.

It is my intention to formally release Ganymede 1.0 in 6-8 weeks,
after folks have had time to give 1.0p1 a try in their environments
and provide feedback. My goal for Ganymede 1.0 is simply to have
better and more integrated documentation, and to take care of any
issues reported with 1.0p1. My goal for userKit 1.0 is to include
pre-written scripts to handle password synchronization with Samba with
support for Windows 98 and NT-style password hashing, in addition to
the Windows NT synchronization included with 1.0p1.

Longer-term, I hope to work with interested folks in producing a
robust and well documented schema kit that includes support for all of
the directory services that we are using in-house at ARL, including IP
and DNS management, automounter, email, NIS netgroups, and more.
