Subject: rp-pppoe 2.6 -- Robust PPPoE client for Linux, NetBSD, Solaris and Mac
Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 23:38:41 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Version 2.6 of rp-pppoe has been released.

rp-pppoe is a user-mode client and server for the Point-to-Point
Protocol over Ethernet, a protocol used by many ADSL service providers.
It runs on standard Linux kernels (2.0 or 2.2; no kernel modification
required), NetBSD and Solaris. rp-pppoe is released under the GNU
General Public License, and can be obtained from:

        http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/

Changes from version 2.5:

Code should now compile cleanly on Caldera and Slackware Linux

Fixed rp-pppoe.spec file to work on Mandrake and Red Hat.

Deleted some obsolete files

Fixed bug in Solaris/x86 port (thanks to Philippe Levan)

Made shell scripts nicer under Solaris (again, Philippe Levan)

Made adsl-status look under /var/run and /etc/ppp for PID files. Should
fix problems with NetBSD.

Added PPPD_EXTRA to pppoe.conf; made the PID file depend on the config
file name. This makes it easier to run multiple PPPoE sessions.

hello everybody,

I've release version 0.1.02 beta of kbigtwo a couple of days
ago. Kbigtwo, licensed under the GNU GPL, is a kde
application that plays a well known card game among chinese
in malaysia (or should I say, around the world?), 'cho dai
di' against you.

Source tarball is available for download at,
http://levgamma.cjb.net/prog/kbigtwo.html

This release has only a minimal set of features. There's
a lot of things yet to be implemented. But it is
definitely, a 'playable' version.

It isn't smart enough to outplay an above-average player
yet, but it should comes in handy when you need to play
'dai di' badly and can't find anybody to play with.

A text based version of bigtwo is also available at my site.

* I'm quite new in writing software, and this is my first
kde app, I will appreciate if anybody is kind enough to
give me some feedbacks...

thanks.

Presentation: Making it -- For Programmers and Other People
Presenter : Robert G. Brown

The "make" utility is a critical part of compiling any but the most
trivial programs on most systems today. Understanding how make is used
leads to a deeper understanding of how a lot of interesting things are
done in Linux. For example, make is commonly used for compiling only
what is needed when a change is made to some of many source code files.
We can also use make for any processing that is related to the update
times of specified files, such as collecting files into a common
database, or transaction processing. Again, the idea here is to reduce
the amount of work we do, limiting it to only what has changed, so that
we don't execute anything that has not changed.

Robert Brown is a founding member and current chairman of KLUG, and has
over 20 years experience in software development in numerous
environments, disciplines, and industries. An intermittent user of UNIX
systems for close to 10 years, Bob has developed software for the
distributed processing and client server models, and now has his first
experience in building and administering his own network. When he's not
bouncing between network nodes, or client, he can be seen cycling on the
Kal-Haven trail, hiking the countryside in search of nature photographs,
or helping to organize volunteer activities around computing, for KLUG
and the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery).

We meet weekly, each Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Our meeting site is Room 4202
of Dunbar Hall on the campus of Western Michigan University.

Subject: WWW: New LUGs Resource Site
Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 23:36:46 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL, January 3, 2001 - LinuxUsersGroups.org announced
today the launch of the new Not-For-Profit website and home for the LUGs
Resource Project, www.linuxusersgroups.org. This new site is dedicated to
providing resources to Linux Users Groups and the Linux community,
planning to offer services to assist with group management, event
planning, vendor coordination, and more.

"I have worked with the LUGs Resource Project since Kara started it at
Linux.com. The vendor listings and LUGs database created there allowed for
User Groups and Vendors to locate and communicate with one another
world-wide. As an independent project, I believe more services will be
more easily available and become a better resource for the Linux
Community" said Jim Ray, co-founder of the Linux Demo Day project and
Jabberzilla developer.

The LUGs Resource Project began as a collaboration of efforts at Linux.com
in early 1999. With focus of Linux.com changing to editorial, Kara
Pritchard decided to start LinuxUsersGroups.org as an independent,
non-vendor owned project dedicated to LUG services.

"Linux User Groups encourage people with all levels of expertise to
connect informally for exchange of information and ideas on a local basis.
By sharing resources, geographically separated groups can now expand their
collective wisdom, pool knowledge, and increase value of participation to
hobbyist and corporate users alike. The impact of a site like
LinuxUsersGroups.org could be tremendous in affecting collaborative
development, building resources for expanding knowledge, and providing
users at all levels with the information they need." says Julie Thornton,
Marketing Director for Linux International and Linux Professional
Institute (sponsored by Caldera, Inc.) and member of KULUA, the Kansas
Unix and Linux Users Association.

About LinuxUsersGroups.org
LinuxUsersGroups.org was founded by Kara Pritchard (sponsored by
Linuxgruven.com) as a Non-Profit service site dedicated to LUG needs.
Current services include vendor liaison services, event coordination
assistance, editorial coverage, free LUG banner advertising, link
resources, and more. Works in progress include a LUG database and event
calendar ring, presentation material resources, speaker's bureau, vendor
contests, surveys, and others to be announced soon.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

popsneaker is a powerful email filter for POP3 accounts. You
can filter emails without downloading the body of a message.
Very flexible filterrules can be defined.

The new version fixes some problems with the last
prerelease. Read the ChangeLog file for more detailed
information. Except for the lack of commandline options,
popsneaker5 should be really usable with this release.

As popsneaker5 is in active development, there are frequent
releases. I will announce them and other related issues on
the popsneaker-dev mailinglist. It's advisable to subscribe
to this list, if you use an unstable version.

If you use a stable popsneaker, it would be a good idea to
subscribe to popsneaker-user.

Subscription can be done on the webpage:

Subject: sysstat-3.3.3 - System performance tools for Linux
Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 23:44:38 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi everybody,

Sysstat release 3.3.3 is available now on sunsite/metalab server:

ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/status/
71kB sysstat-3.3.3.tar.gz
73kB sysstat-3.3.3-1.src.rpm
57kB sysstat-3.3.3-1.i386.rpm

The sysstat utilities are a collection of performance monitoring tools
for Linux. These include sar, mpstat, iostat and sa tools.

Sysstat release 3.3.3 is the first version that has been partly updated
for kernels 2.4.x.
The format of the daily data files has changed again, and is not
compatible with the previous one. So make sure to delete your old data
files in the /var/log/sa directory before using sysstat 3.3.3, since
data cannot be appended to them...
Please note that version 3.3.3 is a development release. The latest
stable version is still 3.2.4.

To learn some more about sysstat, check out
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sebastien.godard/

Changes vs 3.3.2 are:
2000/12/31: Version 3.3.3
* Disk usage displayed by iostat on SMP machines was wrong (following a
recent change). This is now fixed.
* iostat command cleaned: all the statistics not implemented in the
standard Linux kernel have been removed (tty, iowait...).
* sar can now handle I/O and transfer rate statistics with both 2.2.x
and 2.4.x Linux kernels (-b option).
* Removed %inode-sz that was displayed by sar -v, since the file
inode-max in /proc/sys/fs no longer exists in Linux 2.4.
* Removed statistics on highest in-used sockets. Relevant counters have
disappeared from sockstat file in /proc/net for 2.4 kernels (sar -n
SOCK).
* Added statistics on IP datagram fragments (sar -n SOCK). Only
available for 2.4 kernels.

Subject: qflib - beta testers for new version needed
Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 23:43:37 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Quality First Software is looking for beta testers for the
soon-to-be-released new version of our free Java library qflib.

Due to the growing number of slightly incompatible JDK versions on
various operating systems, it is getting hard to test a new release
thoroughly. Instead of delaying the new release further we decided to
start a beta test program.

If you are interested in a pre-release of qflib 0.98.0, please send an
email to qflib@qfs.de, stating the operating system and JDK versions
you intend to use qflib on. We'd also like to know whether you intend
to compile qflib yourself and whether you are using an IDE like
JBuilder.

This information is voluntary and considered confidential.

If you don't already know about qflib:
======================================

One of the key factors in the development of our products is the
reusability of their components. For that reason, many parts have been
separated into a library which has grown into a project of its own
under the name of qflib.

Packages include:
  - elaborate logging system with tool support
  - configuration management for user settings
  - lots of GUI stuff, especially a JTable extension that supports
sorting and filtering with only a few lines of code
  - a collection of miscellaneous utilities, e.g. a command line
parser, a thread pool, an extension to ResourceBundle and many
    more

Apart from the source code, complete Javadoc API documentation is
available as well as introductory documentation and examples in
English and German.

Detailed information and the current version are available at
http://www.qfs.de/en/projects/qflib/index.html

Changes in version 0.98.0
=========================

This release took far too long, so it includes quite a lot of changes.
Also included is a new demo for the option package in the demo directory.

New features:

- - The logging system has been redesigned to separate the issues of
filtering, writing and formatting into specialized classes and
interfaces. This time the changes are fully backwards compatible.
Special thanks to Oliver Brandt of ATecoM GmbH who provided most of
this code. Based on this there is now support for writing messages
to a log file that is limited in size, starting a new one when it
  fills.

- - The LogSetup class in the util package can be used to set up the
various aspects of the logging system through a wide range of
  command line arguments.

- - The option package has undergone a major overhaul:
  - Things look and behave nicer and there is better support for
    enabled/disabled edits and groups.
  - TextOptionEdits can have their own JScrollPane.
  - The new EditorOptionEdit can be used, among other things, to display
    and edit HTML.
  - RadioOptionGroups now can have a frame and title of their own.
  - The TextOption class now has static methods split and join to
convert between a string array and a multi line string.
  - The OptionGroup/OptionEdit tree hierarchy has been made public
    and can be traversed.
  - OptionDialogs are now based on the new ModalDialog class so the
buttons of an OptionDialog are now configurable.

- - A new common base class for message and option dialogs is introduced
with gui/ModalDialog. It simplifies configuration of the buttons of
  a dialog.

- - The new class MultiMap is an implementation of the Map interface
that stores more than one value per key. Initially written mainly as
a base for the MRUCache (see below) it already proved its usefulness
  many times.

- - Based on the MultiMap, the new class MRUCache stores only a limited
number of resources, keeping the most recently used ones when it
starts to overflow. This is similar in a way to a WeakHashMap, but
  also works with JDK 1.1.

- - ExtensionFileFilter is a generic implementation of an extension
based file filter that can be used with AWT, Swing and File.list().

- - The EventQueue now uses a trick to get inside the AWT event queue
thread even for JDK 1.1. This means that the ExceptionHandler will
now work for JDK 1.1 along with the other EventQueue hacks. There
also is a new hack that fixes Alt-... keybindings for some Motif
based JDKs (eg. IBM's JDKs for Linux), so menu shortcuts will work
  again.

- - Commands may now signal the CommandDistributor that they don't
require a handler. This avoids UnhandledCommandExceptions for message
  type commands.

- - The ArgsParser has new methods to set default values for command line
options and to ease evaluation of the parse result.

- - For better comformance with similar methods in option/OptionSet and
util/ArgsParser, MapResourceBundle.getInteger has been deprecated and
  replaced with getInt.

Bugs fixed:

- - SwingUtil.withEvents used together with qflib's EventQueue had
problems under JDK 1.2. This lead to a deadlock in qflog when loading
  log files.

- - SortedTableHelper now cancels table editing automatically when the
sort order or the filter settings change.

- - The LevelTreeSelectionModel had a bug that caused a
NullPointerException when the root of a tree was visible.

- - A timing problem in gui/MultiPane could cause the initial divider
setting to override the saved and restored setting.

- - Message.showMessage now displays custom objects after the message
  instead of before.

- - log/TreeFilter could not be compiled without the JUnit framework.

- - The constant FATAL_ERROR in util/MessageCollector is now 3 (it was
  accidentally defined as 0).

- - util/MessageCollector now has an instance mechanism to associate
  collectors with the current thread.
