Subject: Autoloader 1.0 - utility for controlling SCSI Tape libraries
Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 17:09:24 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hi
Autoloader is a utility for controlling SCSI Tape libraries, or
Jukeboxes. It moves tapes from the slots to the tape drives, or from the
tape drives to the slots. Use it to change tapes in your backup scripts.
You are free to use it for anything non-commercial as long as you email
back which tape library it worked on. Eventually a list of all the
supported Tape Libraries will be compiled from it.
It's based on data from Exabyte, and ADIC, but appears to work with
others.
Go to: http://www.ee.ryerson.ca/~sblack/autoloader
for downloads.
Requires:
Linux Kernel with generic SCSI support, and a Tape library.
Enjoy
Mark

From: Graham Freeman <gfreeman@cs.adfa.edu.au>
Subject: New release of Quikscript, a PS typesetting program
Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 17:32:47 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
This posting announces the release of a new version of Quikscript
and an editor for preparing Quikscript documents.
Quikscript is a PostScript text formatting and typesetting program.
It enables documents to be prepared on any type of hardware, using
visible layout marks to control the appearance of the output, and
produce output on a PostScript printer by despatching Qs and the
document file to the device. No processing is performed by the
host hardware; all processing is done within the printer.
Non-Postscript printers can be handled using a PostScript previewer
like ghostscript.
The advantage that Quikscript provides, other than portability,
is precision of control over output. Because it is written in
PostScript, it is interpreted at run-time within the printer.
It is possible to create documents that modify the Quikscript
program during execution. It is very easy to include other
PostScript programs or fragments with Quikscript. It is possible
to use special PostScript fonts, such as hand-generated ones.
Graphics generated from a variety of sources can be easily included,
as can text output from computer programs. It is possible to embed
Quikscript within an EPS document, such as an advertisement or an
invoice.
Quikscript documents can be prepared using any text editor. Alternatively,
an editor is provided with Quikscript, Qse, which some people find useful.
Qse is written in Java, so it should be portable to most platforms, provided
that a Java virtual machine is installed. Qse simplifies document preview
and printing, and has documentation built in through a help system.
The Quikscript distribution is available by anonymous ftp from
"ftp.adfa.edu.au" in the directory "pub/postscript". Qse can be
obtained from
ftp://ftp.adfa.edu.au/pub/postscript/Qse.jar
and there is a README file for both Quikscript and Qse in
ftp://ftp.adfa.edu.au/pub/postscript/Qs_README.html
Both Qs and Qse may also be accessed through the World Wide Web at URL
http://www.cs.adfa.edu.au/~gfreeman
(The FTP server will check your site first to verify that it is not a
target for a denial-of-service attack. If your ISP does not have the
reverse DNS tables set up correctly, the FTP request will fail. Contact
me if you have problems.)

LILO release 21.6.1 is based upon Werner Almesberger's LILO version 21.
Version 21.6.1 is a maintenance release, fixing a few minor problems.
Version 21.6 is an upgrade for users of the Reiser File System, and adds
new diagnostic capabilities. Internal changes allow booting kernels with
larger real-mode setup codes (2.4.0 and later). This version is fully
backward compatible with version 21.5, which added the customizable boot
menu interface, and versions back to 21.2, which allowed booting beyond
the 1024 cylinder limit on disks >8Gb.
Source code is available for download from:

Or from the main distribution site:

Subject: SECURITY: LOMAC v1.0 Mandatory Access Control in an LKM
Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 17:38:01 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
LOMAC v1.0 is now available for download. LOMAC is a security
enhancement for Linux 2.2 kernels, implemented as a Loadable Kernel
Module. It implements a form of Low Water-Mark Mandatory Access
Control (MAC) to protect the integrity of processes and data from
viruses, Trojan horses, malicious remote users, and compromised root
daemons.
LOMAC is designed for simplicity and compatibility with existing
software. Although it lacks some of the advanced MAC features found
in more complex and powerful schemes, LOMAC provides a simple and
useful form of MAC integrity protection that requires:
no kernel patches,
no modifications to existing applications,
no modifications to existing configuration files, and
no site-specific configuration.
Consequently, LOMAC can be used to enhance the security of
currently-deployed systems. Although a good number of features and
fixes remain to be implemented, LOMAC is presently functional enough
to thwart script kiddies, and is sufficiently stable for everyday use.
(I'm using it now.) LOMAC is Free software, available under the GNU
GPL. The distribution and supporting documentation is available via
LOMAC's Freshmeat page at:

current project to an interested audience, or would you simply like
to enthuse people for Linux?
We are looking for speakers and workshop tutors for the 3. Brunswick
Linux-Days and the developer conference. The show wants to offer the
whole spectrum from the absolute beginner's level up to the experienced
user and professional. Due to increasing importance of free software
for the society also non technical talks are welcome. There is no
limit in the variety of topics.
Please send your abstract (20 lines à 80 characters) to
programm@braunschweiger.linuxtage.de. Kindly include the following
details:
- - title of your talk/presentation

Subject: epkg-2.0 - Encap package manager
Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 17:41:09 GMT
Reply-To: roth+encap@uiuc.edu
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I am pleased to announce the release of epkg-2.0.
epkg is a free, open source package manager which uses the Encap
package management system. The Encap system provides a completely
automated way to install, remove, upgrade, and share third-party
software packages by using symbolic links. Encap is simple and
flexible for system administrators to use, as well as being completely
transparent to users.
In the year since its initial release, epkg has proven its usefulness
and flexibility in many environments around the world. Here at the
University of Illinois, epkg is a critical part of our production system
infrastructure under AIX and Solaris, and is also used to distribute
software for AIX, HP-UX, IRIX, Linux, and Solaris to researchers on
campus who maintain their own systems. Meanwhile, administrators at
other sites have ported epkg to BeOS, CYGWIN, and OpenBSD. The Encap
Archive is even being mirrored in Europe.
This release of epkg includes numerous new features and improvements.
A summary of the changes since the last release is included below.
The epkg package manager can be obtained from:
http://www.encap.org/epkg/
It is available as both source code and binary Encap packages for a
variety of platforms.
For more information on the Encap package management system, please
see the WSG Encap Archive:
http://www.encap.org/
Enjoy!
- --------------
Here is a summary of changes since the last release of epkg:
* epkg's output is much more terse by default. Use multiple "-v"
options to increase verbosity.
* New "update" mode (-u) to grab a package tar archive from an
update dir, extract it into the source dir, and install it. Use
either the -U option or the $ENCAP_UPDATEDIR environment variable
to set the location of the update directory. You can update a
given package by saying "epkg -u pkgname", or you can just say
"epkg -u" and it will install any updated versions it finds for
any package already installed in the Encap source directory.
* Integrated FTP support using libfget. If you compile epkg with
support for this, you can set the update directory to an FTP URL
(e.g., "ftp://encap.cso.uiuc.edu/pub/encap/pkgs/rs6000-aix4.3.3"),
and epkg will grab updates directly from the FTP server.
* New "check" mode (-k) which checks the links for all files in a
package and tells you whether any are missing.
* Clean mode can no longer be used in conjunction with install,
remove, and batch modes.
* Much more flexible archive compression formats. Both epkg and
mkencap do the right thing for all of ".tar", ".tar.Z",
".tar.gz", ".tgz", and ".tar.bz2", assuming you have the right
set of external binaries in your path.
* The libtar API has changes somewhat, so you will need libtar-1.2
or newer in order to use the builtin tar support. Older libtar-1.0.x
releases will not work.
* The libencap API has been completely revamped. It should now
be possible for applications to use the library to manipulate Encap
packages with minimal difficulty.
* A number of memory leaks and other bugs have been fixed.
