=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

xzgv is a picture viewer for X, with a thumbnail-based file selector.
It uses GTK+ and Imlib. Most file formats are supported, and the
thumbnails used are compatible with xv, zgv, and the Gimp. It can also
be used with `xzgv file(s)', to effectively bypass the file selector.

xzgv differs from other picture viewers for X in that it uses one
window for both the file selector and viewer, it (unlike xv) allows
both scrolling and fit-to-window methods of viewing large pictures,
and it (unlike xv and some others) doesn't ever mangle the picture's
aspect ratio without you telling it to. It also provides extensive
keyboard support; if you prefer using the keyboard, this is almost
certainly the best viewer for you. But it doesn't skimp on the mousey
stuff, either. So anyway, it's just terribly great. :-)

xzgv's homepage is here:

  http://xzgv.browser.org/

You can also download it from sunsite/metalab/ibiblio/whatever it is
this week... :-)

  ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/apps/graphics/viewers/X/xzgv-0.6.tar.gz

0.6 isn't exactly dripping with new features, but it does fix a lot of
bugs.

* Changes in xzgv 0.6

** New features

Added gamma support, but as with brightness/contrast this is only
available from the keyboard for now. (This works just like it does in
zgv, though I added it to xzgv first.) The basic idea is to ignore the
rather unworkable image/screen gamma distinction, and just use a
relative gamma with fast shortcuts for common cases. So pressing `1'
gives a gamma adjustment of 1.0 (i.e. no adjustment), `2' gives 2.2
(for e.g. viewing linear-gamma files on an average PC monitor), `3'
gives 1/2.2 (~0.45, for e.g. viewing 2.2-gamma files on a linear-gamma
display), and `4' reverts to any `--gamma' setting (or 1.0 if none was
set). You can also use alt-comma and alt-dot for more precise control
of gamma adjustment. Note that gamma is deliberately *not* reset by
the brightness/contrast resetting keys.

You can now change the sorting order from the command-line with
`-o'/`--sort-order' (and from a config file similarly).

** Bugfixes

Added my own PNG reader (well, libpng interface :-)), ported from zgv.
This avoids a couple of Imlib problems - notably, greyscale PNGs are
now read correctly.

If you omitted the arg to an option in a config file, it would
segfault. Fixed that, and applied brown paper bag as appropriate. :-)
It would also previously get stuck in an infinite loop if given a
bogus geometry arg, and it assumed $HOME was set - both fixed.

GIF reader was previously broken for interlaced GIFs with less than 4
lines; this broke the heap, leading to difficult-to-pin-down
segfaults. No longer. :-)

Various portability fixes - thanks to Steven Bankowitz, Juergen Salk,
and Norio Suzuki for letting me know how 0.5 did on various non-Linux
systems. I hope xzgv will now compile and run ok on *BSD, Solaris, and
HP-UX, though there are probably still issues with installation in
some cases.

Before, when you used decoupled scaling and then rotated a picture, it
messed up when resetting things for the next picture. Fixed that.

Now copes with copy/move when started as `xzgv file(s)'. It's not
perfect, in that the selector isn't updated (so after a move things
can be confusing), but at least it's usable.

When rescanning the directory (in the control-r sense :-)), the
keyboard cursor now tries to stay at the same place in dir list, for
consistency with zgv and because it's just nicer. Thanks to Philippe
Marzouk for spotting this one.

The file details dialog now works fully even when started with `xzgv
file(s)' (previously the details from any thumbnail were missing).

** Other changes

Made icon a bit less indistinct. :-)

Here's the LSM entry:

- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Begin4
Title: xzgv
Version: 0.6
Entered-date: 2000-10-28
Description: xzgv is a GTK+/Imlib-based picture viewer for X, which
supports most popular image formats. It provides a
thumbnail-based file selector, and allows panning and
                fit-to-window methods of viewing.

xzgv is more a rewrite of zgv than a port as such, but
those familiar with zgv should see more than a passing
resemblance. And while it's mouse-friendly, it can
also be used entirely from the keyboard. :-)

I get so much flak for the DSFH I decided to blame the latest twist in it
on some innocent teenager on IRC. DSFH, the Dotted Standard File

Yes, that's / , and yes the L0cus mod means now you can

        mv command some_other_name

or similar and not effect the functioning of the box to any great extent.
You can't do that with /dev yet though. AND IT WAS L0cus's idea!

Also new and cLIeNUX-original in 1.4 pre is the PIRDE Personal Integrated
Relational Database Environment. PIRDE is for large wads of personal data,
like oversized email folders. It is not a pro transactional blah blah
blah. It is general and relational though.

cLIeNUX 1.4 pre also features libc5.4.46 again, and gcc 2.7.2.3 again.
If I change the bootkernel it might be 2.2.17 rtlinux.

I've also ported just the ed-like portion of the sam editor from Bell
Labs. sam could actually replace ed. I actually use ed. This is high
praise. There's other new stuff in 1.4 too. A google shortcut, see (man)
now calls about (apropos) if there's no initial hit, and so on.
What else... uh, oh, the hexhead keymap, and qwerty, Dvorak and hexhead
are always on f10, f11 and f12. Lots of stuff.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The North Bay Linux Users Group serves the San Francisco North Bay, in
California. Enclosed is our latest General Meeting announcement. Questions
may be directed to the poster, or to info@nblug.org.

Greetings all!

For those interested in the nitty-gritty, here it is. Read further for the
gory details.

The short of it:
WHO: Steve Giles of OpenNMS.org
WHERE: O'Reilly & Associates
WHEN: November 14th, 2000 - 7:30PM PST SHARP!!

The long of it:
It's that time again. The NBLUG General Meeting is almost here. This month
we have a very special guest. His name is Steven Giles from OpenNMS.org.
OpenNMS.org is a company that is working on an Open Source network
management platform. The idea is to eventually end up with an Open Source
product similar to HP's OpenView. OpenView allows a network administrator
to configure SNMP capable devices, track network statistics and stay
informed of network events such as machine crashes, bandwidth problems and
security incidents.

This event should appeal to a lot of folks - not just those running Linux.
The OpenNMS.org software runs on several platforms since it's written in
Java. So, if you know folks interested in networking and network management,
be sure to pass on this announcement to them.

One of NBLUG's promises to the OpenNMS.org folks was that we'd have a good
sized crowd. Seeing as how we have a lot of people on this announcement
list, that shouldn't be a difficult task. If you passed this on to at least
one other person you think may be interested, that would ensure a great
turnout. Steve will be flying out from the East Coast just to talk to us.
I do believe this is the furthest someone has traveled to meet with us.

Directions, as always, are on our website. I look forward to seeing you all
there! Remember, be sure to get to the meeting early, as we stop handing
out tickets for our door prize drawing once the meeting has started! We
also ask that people who have won at the previous meeting to NOT take a
ticket so that we can get goodies to as many folks as possible.

Subject: SMSLink 0.50b now available
Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 21:39:53 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I'm pleased to announce the public release of SMSLink 0.50b.

This software implements a client / server gateway to the SMS protocol
(the short messages sent to mobile phones). It requires the use of
dedicated hardware, though (a Falcom, Wavecom or Siemens voice modem GSM
module,
which is basically just a GSM with a plain serial port and AT commands
support -- please see the project web page for a list of supported
hardware). Both sending and receiving SMSes is supported. Also included
is a SMS to eMail gateway module. Users are now able to send (short)
emails straight from their mobile phones keypad. Mail delivery to the
GSM is under development.

Version 0.50b brings a port of the software (both client and server) to
a new platform: FreeBSD (see CHANGELOG for details).

PLEASE NOTE: this project is now hosted at SourceForge (see URL below).

This software is distributed under the GNU GPL.

For more information, please visit the project web page at :

http://smslink.sourceforge.net/

Thanks.

Ph. A.

Subject: new issue v3.0 Infrared-HOWTO (former IR-HOWTO)
Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 21:40:18 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi,

now available is v3.0 of the Infared-HOWTO (former IR-HOWTO). There
are only minor changes of the content. The HOWTO still needs
a major rewrite. But I suppose the following changes are
important, too.

- - New URL http://irda.sourceforge.net of the Linux/IrDA Project,
so people don't have to struggle for the new address.
- - New URL http://mobilix.org/howtos.html of the HOWTO.
- - Conversion to DocBook format, which makes it easier to maintain
by a group of writers. It's quite easier to make separate
parts, which can easily be included into the main document.
- - New name of the HOWTO, makes it more clear that it deals
with IrDA and remote control via infrared devices as well.
- - New GNU Free Documentation License - GFDL.

Werner
