Title: ecasound
Version: 1.8.2r14
Entered-date: 16SEP00
Description: Ecasound is a software package designed for multitrack
audio processing. It can be used for simple tasks like
audio playback, recording and format conversions, as
well as for multitrack effect processing, mixing,
recording and signal recycling. Ecasound supports
a wide range of audio inputs, outputs and effect algorithms.
Effects and audio objects can be combined in various
ways, and their parameters can be controlled by
operator objects like oscillators and MIDI-CCs. As
most functionality is located in shared libraries,
creating alternative user-interfaces is easy. A
versatile console mode interface is included in the package.

Subject: Intelligent FRAC - an new old 3D packing game.
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 17:50:23 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hello to all c.o.l.a. subscribers.
Does anyone of you remember FRAC ? This is a 3D packing game impemented
for MS DOS back in 1990 by Max Shapiro & Per Bergland (a.k.a.
'Simsalabim Software').
Now FRAC returns to public in a new quality:
- - Available in svgalib and X11 versions
- - Supports a higher resolution and 16-256 colour modes (svgalib),
or practically any colour depth from 4 to 32 bpp (X11).
Takes full advantage of a higher depth, but works also with an
unsuppported video card, using generic VGA interface.
- - Optional joystick support: works with all joystick drivers.
- - Optional support for playing background music (choose your
favourite tunes and music players) and volume/balance control.
- - A new set of fractal images for playboard background
- - Demo mode (plays itself!)
This time the game will not be confused by a super-fast computer,
and won't threaten you, because it is free and open source.
Size: 343K (both versions in a single package) - and that's it!
svgalib (try with libggi) and/or libX11 with a X11R6-compatible
server (like XFree86) are the only components needed to run it
Get the latest (and the only!) release of IFRAC from
http://members.fortunecity.com/acelin/ifrac/
and enjoy.
P.S. From the above site you can also get the shareware
release of the original application, if you are curious.

From: "Greg Fodor" <gf24@cornell.edu>
Subject: Announcing www.half-empty.org and Glasscode forum system
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 17:53:42 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hey all.
I'm Greg, a sophmore here at Cornell University and over the past 9 months
or so I've been developing a new forum system based on
Java/Linux/Apache/MySQL that is more modularlized and feature rich than
slashcode. It's called Glasscode and focuses on heavy moderation with no
submission queue, that is, every story posted appears.. but only those who
behave can post more.
Anyway, Glasscode is only half the story.. the debut site for Glasscode
(called half-empty) is now up and running out of my house in Ithaca. It's on
cable right now but will be moving out soon to a T3 line. I'd like you all
to take a look and play around with it, it's running Debian Linux 2.2.15
with the aforementioned stuff as the backend. It's using JServ to drive the
servlets, also.
I see half-empty as a site where people will be able to go and post anything
and everything they've ever wanted. If the people like what they see, the
good posters will be able to come back for more. There's right now a 8MB
limit on postings, so you can include images, sounds, anything in there with
your HTML. There's even an inline HTML editing Java applet so you don't have
to worry about knowing HTML :)
Check out http://www.half-empty.org for the site, and
http://www.geocities.com/hhh_nochance for a Glasscode information site.
Glasscode will be GPL'ed eventually after I finish polishing off the edges
into a releasable software package. I think i'm going to sell detailed
documentation and various other frills which add to its functionality so
maybe I can turn a profit on 9 month's work + $450 server :)
Let me know what y'all think! :)
Thanks!
- -Greg

Subject: XBoard and WinBoard 4.1.0 - Graphical Chessboard
Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 18:04:28 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
** Announcing the release of XBoard and WinBoard, version 4.1.0 **
A new release of both XBoard and WinBoard is now available. Version
4.1.0 adds several new features. All the features of Mark Williams's
"Winboard Plus 4.0.8" are merged in, and most of them have been ported
to xboard as well.
You can get both programs from my Chess page on the World Wide Web.
In addition, they should soon be available from GNU FTP sites.
- - http://www.tim-mann.org/chess.html
- - ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/xboard/
- - ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/winboard/
XBoard is a graphical chessboard for the X Window System that can
serve as a user interface for GNU Chess, Crafty, and other chess
engines, for the Internet Chess Servers, and for electronic mail
correspondence chess. XBoard can also be used by itself. It can read
and write game files in PGN (portable game notation).
WinBoard is a similar program for Microsoft Windows 95/98 and Windows
NT. It includes all the major features of XBoard except email
correspondence chess. Warning: WinBoard does not work on Windows 3.1
or 3.11, not even with Win32s. It should work on Windows 2000 and
Windows ME, but I have not tested it there.
Please report any apparent new bugs to me. Some known bugs and
deficiencies in previous versions have not been addressed. It is not
necessary to report your favorite bug again if you have reported it
before, unless the ChangeLog erroneously says it has been fixed. Most
known bugs, deficiencies, and suggestions received are now listed in
the ToDo file.
--Tim Mann <tim.mann@compaq.com>
== Highlights from the ChangeLog ==
* White pieces now have dark borders.
* Games and positions can be copied to and pasted from the clipboard.
* In ICS games, you can register your next planned move before it is
your turn ("premove").
* Audible low-on-time alarm in ICS games.
* PGN Training mode.
* When a game starts, the board is automatically made visible and
positioned so that your pieces move upward.
* Blindfold mode.
* The large WinBoard Options menu has been broken down into several
easier to use dialogs.
* Simple sound support added to XBoard. (WinBoard already had sound.)
Some additional sound events and built-in sounds.
* Several small bug fixes.

of the expiration of U S Patent 4,405,829 - the RSA product
of two primes patent.
Then our own Rick Holbert will present some background on
SSH, and an example of its application in a mixed OS environment
to wrap rsync transfers with SSH for secure file transfers in
a WAN setting.
Finally Phil Hunter will work through the steps which occur
during the method for pulling inbound email from a pop or imap
server through an SSH tunnel, using OpenSSL, OpenSSH, a
ipopd/imapd server, fetchmail, and sendmail.
Goodies:
Sysadmin magazine has sent a back issue for free distribution
to the attendees, and another major 'goodie' may arrive in time as
well.
Stump the Chump^h^h^h^h^hExpert:
Always popular --- bring in that problem box, and it will probably
go home fixed.
As always, and given the informal nature of the group's
`management' and the vaguries of the presenters' schedules,
the agenda and content are subject to change.
Additionally, the _formal_ meeting ends at the stated time.
We've noticed that folks continue to stand around in the parking lot
for _hours_. We should probably adjourn to a local watering hole,
to slake thirst and sit down.
