LFSMake is a Makefile whose purpose is to automate the creation of a
Linux system "from scratch". It is inspired by the online book
"Linux From Scratch" by Gerard Beekmans.
It automates some methods described in the book, with a few differences.
It also automates installation of some packages not mentioned in the
book, including KDE2 Beta-4, XFree86, the ALSA sound drivers, and
Netscape Communicator with a bundle of plug-ins and add-ons.
For details see http://www.sunsetsystems.com/lfsmake.php3.

Subject: Ucron 1.3.0 - Improved cron daemon
Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 20:16:37 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I have uploaded ucron version 1.3.0 to
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/incoming/ucrond-1.3.0.tar.gz
from where it should be moved to
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/daemons/cron
Ucron is a replacement for commonly used cron daemons but it is better
suitable for systems that have frequently a shutdown.
It works with existing crontabs like those used in vixie-cron (minus a few
less common features) because parameters are optional but only one crontab
format is required. The main differences are the possibility to start or
resume commands if the system was down at execution time, specify commands
relative to the system uptime, using sequential processing with priority,
count the system up/downtime and to allow control and monitoring of commands
by connecting crontab somewhat more sophisticated through a unix domain socket.
Ucron is in the public since 1997 and I have received a lot of mail from
people who use it. There is a foolproof-routine against buffer overruns
and until now no serious security issue has been reported.
Important changes against release 1.2.5:
A new include statement to allow a user more than one crontab where each
crontab has an independent environment.
A new option to redirect mail output for a single command. This was done to
keep the subject and because if you pipe to mail it is likely that you
receive something even if there was no output.
The second is that ucron was started when slackware with dcron was everywhere
but now it is normally vixie-cron and most scripts for user-deletion use -r
and not -d to kill a crontab. So that both is valid now and -s is used to
start entries.
However, 1.2.4 and 1.2.5 are very well tested now while 1.3.0 is newer.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ZERO G SHIPS INSTALLANYWHERE(R) 3.5 LATEST EDITION OF AWARD-WINNING
MULTI-PLATFORM SOFTWARE DEPLOYMENT SOLUTION
InstallAnywhere Upgrade Delivers Industry’s Most Extensive Platform Support
and Full Java 2, version 1.3 Compatibility
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 13, 2000) - Zero G, the leading provider of
multi-platform software deployment solutions, today announced the immediate
availability of version 3.5 of the InstallAnywhere product line.
InstallAnywhere 3.5 features many new enhancements, such as full Java 2,
version 1.3 compatibility and Linux support, extending Zero G’s leadership
in the multi-platform software deployment market.
InstallAnywhere 3.5 provides commercial and enterprise software producers
with the industry’s most powerful solutions for the complex process of
installing and configuring software across multiple platforms.
"With this release, InstallAnywhere solidifies its position as the most
powerful, most flexible and most intelligent multi-platform software
deployment solution available. It offers the most complete platform support
of any software deployment solution on the market," said Eric Shapiro, CEO
of Zero G. "As our customers’ needs become more sophisticated,
InstallAnywhere will continue to deliver the features they count on to
deploy their mission critical applications."
The InstallAnywhere Family
The InstallAnywhere 3.5 family – Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, and
Now! – streamlines the complexity of performing complicated, multi-system
deployment with an easy-to-use interface. This gives software producers a
single solution that can handle the intricacies of deploying software across
different platforms.
- - InstallAnywhere Enterprise Edition 3.5, the world’s most powerful software
deployment solution, solves complex multi-platform deployment problems and
provides maximum customization, along with full international support for 29
different languages
- - InstallAnywhere Standard Edition 3.5, the industry standard for
multi-platform software installation, offers more features and
customizability than any product in its price class
- - InstallAnywhere Now! 3.5, the easiest, quickest, and most inexpensive way
to build multi-platform software installers
"In today's client/server environments, configuring applications across
multiple platforms is a complex procedure. Prior to InstallAnywhere,
software producers were forced to hand-author custom installation procedures
for every operating system," said Greg Maletic, co-founder and executive
vice-president of Zero G. "Our customers need an extremely flexible, yet
full-featured deployment solution that deploys software on multiple
platforms – one that can install any application or data file, and one that
is extremely easy to use. InstallAnywhere was created to be that solution."
Making Anytime, Anywhere Deployment a Reality
InstallAnywhere builds professional, multi-platform installers capable of
installing and configuring software on virtually any client or server
platform – all the more important as the number of computing platforms
increases. Each installer that is created by InstallAnywhere recognizes the
platform under which it is operating. The installer then tailors its
installation to the target system, whether by creating shortcuts in the
Windows Start Menu, setting custom icons on the Mac OS, starting Windows
NT/2000 services, setting Unix environment variables, or modifying file
permissions on Unix systems. This approach saves software producers the time
and expense of building separate installers for each platform and ensures
that the end-user’s experience is consistently positive.
InstallAnywhere’s Market-leading Feature Set
The industry's leading commercial and enterprise software developers use
InstallAnywhere to simplify the process of deploying software. They rely on
InstallAnywhere’s unique ability to:
- - Quickly create universal installers that can deploy software to multiple
platforms via the Internet or CD-ROM
- - Build installers for more platforms than any other solution, including:
Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000 and NT, Mac OS, Solaris, Linux, AIX, HP-UX, and
virtually any other Java-enabled platform
- - Install a Java virtual machine (VM) as part of an application’s install,
ensuring that the target system has the best VM for the application being
installed
- - Build installers eight times quicker, 40% smaller, and that, once
deployed, run twice as fast as any alternative solution
- - Automatically build Web Installer HTML pages for easily deploying software
via intranets and the Internet
Pricing and Availability
InstallAnywhere 3.5 is licensed on a per-developer, per-system basis,
allowing for the creation of an unlimited number of installers.
InstallAnywhere Enterprise Edition is currently available direct from Zero G
for USD $1,995, Standard Edition is available for USD $995, and Now! is free
of charge. Special pricing is available for site licenses and volume
purchases. For more information, please contact Zero G sales at (415)
512-7771, extension 4, or email sales@ZeroG.com.

Subject: COMMERCIAL: Yggdrasil Linux DVD Archives
Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 20:32:03 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
September 14, 2000--Yggdrasil Computing has shipped the world's
first Linux DVD9-ROM, a successor format to CD-ROM's, with over
twelve times the capacity. Linux DVD Archives (MSRP $24.95) contains
over eight billion bytes of open source software (over 23 billion
bytes uncompressed), giving Linux users a new level of convenience and
access to open source software.
Linux DVD Archives is the first DVD-ROM made from dvdtape, a
program released under the GNU General Public License by Yggdrasil.
Because of the high level of technology risk inherent in building the
first DVD-9, and building it from a new development system, we chose
to begin with a very simple product. A user cannot install Linux
from Linux DVD Archives, so it is only useful as an accessory for
current Linux users. What the product does provide is the largest
collection of software from the metalab.unc.edu and ftp.gnu.org
archives ever assembled on a single mass produced medium.
DVD-9 is the state of the art in disc manufacturing, requiring
equipment that can bond together layers with two different metals: the
conventional aluminum used on CD's and single-layer DVD's, with a
layer of gold, giving the discs their distinctive look: silvery on top
and gold underneath. Although the manufacturing process may be more
exotic than with smaller DVD's, Linux DVD Archives should be compatible
with all DVD-ROM drives.
There have been other DVD-ROM's produced for Linux, but these
have been "DVD-5" discs, which consist of a single aluminum layer like a
conventional CD and have to 55% of the capacity available per side
with DVD technology. Yggdrasil's DVD-9 product enables use of the
full capacity. The bigger difference, in terms of which event will
improve products available to end users, is that Yggdrasil has released
its internally developed software for making DVD's under the GNU General
Public License, eliminating an expensive proprietary barrier throughout
the Linux industry for DVD production, an act which will likely presage
more widespread development of DVD-ROM's.

Subject: blueMail 0.02 - a Blue Wave and QWK compatible mail reader
Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 20:26:29 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
What is blueMail?
- -----------------
blueMail is an offline mail packet reader for Unix and other systems,
based on MultiMail which was originally developed by Kolossvary Tamas,
Toth Istvan, John Zero, and then by William McBrine.
blueMail supports the Blue Wave and QWK packet formats and will support
some different formats like FTS message bases and some Internet protocols
like POP3, SMTP, and NNTP in the future. It is designed to be a reasonable
alternative to the Blue Wave mail reader. blueMail has a full screen,
colored user interface, built with the curses library, and it also compiles
under DOS, Windows and OS/2.
blueMail is free, "open source" software, distributed under the GNU
General Public License; its current maintainer is Ingo Brueckl
<ib@wupperonline.de>.
You can get the latest version from
http://home.wtal.de/ib/bluemail
where you can find binaries for Linux (Red Hat RPM), DOS and Windows, too.
Requirements
- ------------
* Unix-compatible (POSIX) system, DOS with DJGPP, Cygwin with Windows, or
OS/2 with EMX
* curses -- tested with ncurses 1.9.3+, and PDCurses 2.2+
* gcc (g++) 2.7.0+ -- may work with other C++ compilers, not tested
* InfoZip, and/or other compressing archivers
* GNU make *may* be required on some systems
* PMODE/DJ (by Thomas Pytel and Matthias Grimrath) and UPX (by Markus
Oberhumer & Laszlo Molnar) is recommended (and used) for the DOS binary
What's new in this version?
- ---------------------------
You can find a list of new features and improvements in the history file
together with a list of new options for the configuration file since
version 0.01.
Tested Systems
- --------------
blueMail will run on multiple platforms, like
MSDOS 6.22 (DJGPP, PDCurses)
Linux 2.0, 2.2 (gcc, egcs, ncurses, PDCurses aka XCurses)
Windows 9x/NT (Cygwin, PDCurses)
and - untested -
OS/2 (emx, PDCurses)
NetBSD (ncurses)
Solaris (curses)
Don't hesitate to have a look on blueMail because of its alpha-like version
number. Though there is still a lot of work to do, it's already fully
usable.

Subject: Zile 1.1 - Zile Is Lossy Emacs (Emacs clone)
Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 20:36:34 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Zile is another Emacs-clone. Zile is a customizable, self-documenting
real-time display editor. Zile was written to be similar as possible to
Emacs; every Emacs user should feel at home with Zile.
Zile features:
- Small but fast and powerful. It is very useful for footprint
installations (like on floppy disk) or quick editing sessions.
- 8-bit clean. Zile can operate with binary files.
- Looks like Emacs. Most Zile key sequences and function names
are identical to Emacs ones.
- Multi buffer editing w/multi level undo. Zile can open an
infinite number of files and can record an infinite sequence of
undo operations.
- Multi window. Zile can display multiple windows on the screen.
- Killing, yanking and registers. The typical killing, yanking and
register features of Emacs are available under Zile.
- Minibuffer completion. Zile can complete the user written text.
This is very useful for `M-x' commands and for selecting files.
- Colors. Zile makes use of the color capatibilities of the
terminal if available.
- Source highlighting ("C" and "C++" only for now). Zile can
highlight the "C" and "C++" source files for better reading.
- Auto fill. Zile automatically breaks the lines when they become
too wide (if the Auto Fill Mode is enabled).

NEWS
Changes between Zile 1.0a4 - Zile 1.1
* Fixed a lot of annoying bugs and updated the documentation.
* Added Auto Fill Mode.
* Added C++ Mode (ISO C++ 14882:1998).
* Updated C Mode keywords to latest C standard (ISO C 9899:1999).
* Implemented `goto-line' (M-g). Contributed by
Carsten Leonhardt <leo@debian.org>.
* Added backup directory feature. Contributed by
Tim Middelkoop <mtim@arranvale.com>.
* Added `describe-function' (C-h d), `describe-variable' (C-h v) and
`describe-key' (C-h k). Now the program is really self-documenting!
* Added `list-bindings' (C-h l b), `list-functions' (C-h l f) and
`list-registers' (C-h l r).
* Now the search functions remember the last searched value.
* All the help functions bound to `M-h' are now bound to `C-h' like Emacs.
* Added a lot of minor but useful features.
WARNING: the file backup variable `backup-files' has been renamed to
`backup-method' and the behavior has changed. Please take a look at the
sample initialization file (press `C-h s').
