From: Eric Taylor <et@rocketship.com>
Subject: Socket Hub freeware announcement
Date: Wed, 5 Jul 2000 14:14:19 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Announcing a freeware networking package
called the HUB
written half in TCL/TK and half in C. The
TCL/TK code is available unrestricted and
binary executables for pc windows and pc linux
are also available (for the C apps). If there
is sufficient interest, the C sources may
be distributed at a future time. The package
is described at my web site:
http://home.sprynet.com/~etailor/hub/hub.htm
At the bottom of this web page are 2 download links.
It is ready for use from windows 98/nt (not 95)
and from a linux pc (bult on redhat 6.1).
The clients can be anywhere on the web
on any platform. Here's a great use for a
dedicated 90mhz pentium system that is lying
around collecting dust.
Regards,
Eric Taylor aka ET@rocketship.com
Here is the first few paragraphs of that
web description:
The HUB is a software message exchange.
It provides reliable dispatching and
broadcasting of text messages that are
accessed using internet TCP/IP client
connections - the norm over the web.
With a Hub, there is always someplace to
connect. Since server software is more
difficult to write than client software
the Hub acts as a Universal Server so
your other net programs can all be
clients. The HUB is similar in concept
to the internet relay chat system (IRC),
except that it is not dedicated to that
purpose and can be used to build custom
apps such as a personal chatting system.
Included is just such a simple chatting
program, written in TCL/TK.
A HUB can be configured to save your
message if no one is listening, or just
throw it away. It can be configured to
dispatch round robin, or broadcast to
all. It can accept multiple input
connections and can be configured to
round robin the input, giving equal
access to all producers, or it can
respond to first come first serve.
These different configurations can be
set up with a click-able TCL/TK dialog.
But broadcasting is not new, you say, so
what's the big deal!
Internet broadcasts usually result in
unreliable UDP data transfer. And even
if you do succeed in using UDP, your
broadcasts won't usually get forwarded
over the web. A HUB gives you
reliability, at relatively low cost.
Networks of HUBs can be interconnected
and access can be controlled with a
simple access list mechanism.
Because the Hub uses a simple message
structure it can also be used with many
existing utilities such as Awk, Grep,
Tcl, Perl etc.. The Hub is an efficient
C program that is controlled by Tcl/Tk
scripts or the command line.

From: Julian Seward <Julian_Seward@muraroa.demon.co.uk>
Subject: bzip2 v1.0, a program and library for data compression
Date: Wed, 5 Jul 2000 14:22:24 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I am pleased to announce version 1.0 of bzip2, a portable, lossless
data compressor based on the Burrows-Wheeler transform. bzip2
achieves good compression and runs on practically every (32/64-bit)
platform in the known universe. The compression engine is also
available as a library, should you desire a programmatic interface.
bzip2 is open-source, with a BSD-style license.
Version 1.0 is fully forwards and backwards compatible with .bz2 files
created by the previous public releases, versions 0.1pl2, 0.9.0 and
0.9.5.
bzip2 has been around since version 0.1pl2 in August 1997, and has
seen many enhancements and refinements since then. I thought it was
about time to have a version 1.0, so here it is.
GETTING HOLD OF IT
You can get it from http://sourceware.cygnus.com/bzip2. The site has
sources, pre-built executables for a wide range of platforms,
pre-built shared libraries/DLLs for a few platforms, and on-line
documentation in various forms.
The sourceware server is always extremely busy, and you may well have
difficulty downloading from there. Please consider using instead one
of the mirrors listed at http://sourceware.cygnus.com/mirrors.html.
My thanks go to the sourceware.cygnus.com folks for hosting bzip2.
WHAT'S NEW IN 1.0 (as against 0.9.5) ?
* Support for large files (> 2 GB) on OSs that support it. Seems to
work for Solaris 7, Tru64 (nee Digital) Unix 5.0, HP/UX 10.20 and
11.00, Cygwin B20.1 on Windows 2000, and natively (MS VC 6.0) on
Windows NT.
* Faster compression: 10%-25% faster than 0.9.5. As ever, your
mileage may vary.
* Much better robustness to corrupted compressed data -- mainly of
interest if you use the library.
* Minor portability enhancements: now builds out of the box on Cygwin,
as well as Unixes and Win32.
* A couple of minor bugs in file handling have been fixed.
* Can be built as a shared library, at least on x86-Linux.

All,
I'm pleased to announce the release of palmdoc. Palmdoc, inspired by
javadoc, is a perl-program intended to help Palm-Programmers document their
projects. It takes a projectname as input and walks along the project
files, generating an html-document from the code and the comments. While
palmdoc has some strict rules, it helps the programmer maintain a clear
document-structure and minimizes the effort of having to write seperate
documentation for each project.
You can download palmdoc from

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Shell configuration files of Juhapekka Tolvanen
http://www.cc.jyu.fi/~juhtolv/configs/shellrc.tgz
SOME FEATURES:
- - Mostly for Zsh. Zsh rules the universe!
- - Remorselessly exploits the similarities of differents Bourne-syntax
shells via sourcing of configuration files of other shells. All
configurations, that work fine on "inferior" shells, are put to their
configuration files and then those files are sourced by "superior"
shells. For example configurations of plain Bourne Shell (sh) are well
understood by bash and zsh, so they can source them without problems.
- - Shamelessly neglects configuring of csh and tcsh and fscking proud of it.
csh and tcsh are broken. Period.
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/unix-faq/shell/csh-whynot/index.html
- - Uses many good configurations from other peoples configuration files.
- Risto J. Laitinen
- Sven Guckes
- Contributors of www.dotfiles.com
- etc.
- - Many useful aliases and functions. Check out these:
- cddoc
- myx (My X)
- wtf (What The Fsck?)
- ash, bash, ksh
- lstar
- untar
- prkl (Perkele!)
- mvcd
- cpcd
- - Paranoid umask
- - Nice completion control
- - Chart of sourcing different configuration files included in Gnome
Dia, EPS and PS formats.
- - Colorless but yet informative default prompt called "cuttwolineprompt".
- username
- short hostname
- present working directory without tilde (easy to copy-paste)
- second line has just % (or # if you are root), so there is lots of
space for your command.
- second line uses RPROMPT for not-so-interesting information. It
goes away, if you write very long command :
- current history event number
- current tty
- - Many functions for changing prompts. When I use Midnight Commander,
I normally use function "publicprompt", because prompts that take two
lines are not good for it.
- - Cool title bars with relevant information. No need to think, wheter
prompt or titlebar should be looked, when information about such
issues like present working directory is needed. Both of them can be
used.
- - Text of titlebars for different terminal types is defined in one
place (not yet for bash).
- - Good dircolors-file. No problems with blue text on black background
or white text on white background. Does not use dircolors when output
does not go to tty.
- - If terminal has enough rows you are greeted with output of
linux_logo or Welcome2L, when you invoke your shell. Whenever
possible, ANSI colors are used.
- - Exploits folding.el for emacs.
And last but not least:
- - Prompt and titlebars of root and lusers looks so different, that you
should not accidentally type commands that should go to normal luser
shell in your root prompt.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
GNU Robots 1.0D has been released. http://www.gnu.org/software/robots/
GNU Robots is a game/diversion where you construct a program for a
little robot, then watch him explore a world. The world is filled with
baddies that can hurt you, objects that you can bump into, and food that
you can eat. The goal of the game is to collect as many prizes as
possible before you are killed by a baddie or you run out of energy.
GNU Robots (including source) is released under the GNU General Public
License. I don't have an rpm available for this - sorry. Download the
source tar.gz file from http://www.gnu.org/software/robots/
The GNU Robots playing field is filled with food (increases energy),
prizes (to increase your score), walls (which you can bump into), and
baddies (which can inflict damage.)
Your GNU Robot program is written in Scheme, implemented using GNU
Guile. Download Guile (required) from
http://www.gnu.org/software/guile/guile.html or
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/guile/ (ftp)
There is an interface for X Windows and Curses. Another interface dumps
all output to a log file (this makes it much easier to run a GNU Robots
"competition".)

Issue #16 of Georg's Brave GNU World,
the monthly GNU forum has been released.
-- Georg Greve
Hi !
This month I'm a little late because after moving it took me a while
to get everything up and running again and there have been problems
with my link to the GNU webserver - sorry for that, things should be
stabilized again next month. Issue #16 of the column is now online and
it can - as usual - be found on the GNU Webpage and its
mirrors. Otherwise just follow the links at the end of this posting.
Georg's Brave GNU World is a monthly column which is being released
simultaneously in five languages (English, German, French, Japanese
and Spanish) on the web and printed in the German "Linux-Magazin" as
well as the "Linux Magazine France." This makes it the monthly column
with the widest distribution worldwide as far as I know.
If you would like to receive mail about new issues directly, you can
subscribe to the "Brave GNU World" announcement mailinglist. Just
send mail to <brave-gnu-world-request@gnu.org> with "subscribe" in
the *body*. The mailinglist is only for announcements that are related
to the "Brave GNU World" and is of very low volume (between 1 and 2
mails a month).
The 16th issue covers the following topics:
* Everybuddy (a cool instant messaging client)
* W3M (ASCII HTML browsing and more)
* Gnofin (a GNOME based program for management of
personal finances)
* Bayonne (a Free Software telephony-server)
* Xnbc (simulating biological neural networks)
* TiMidity++ (playing & converting MIDI files)
This column intends to provide a forum for all GNU maintainers,
friends and associates and I am always open to suggestions. So if
you
* have questions about the GNU Project that might be of general
interest
* have a GNU Project and would like to improve its profile
* would like to start a GNU Project you are looking for people to
start it with
* think something doesn't get the publicity it deserves
* would like to see something made public
send mail to:
"Brave GNU World <column@gnu.org>"
This column is for everyone with an interest in Free Software,
so don´t hesitate to contact me if your project is under the
GPL/LGPL and you´d like to see it introduced here.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Announcing a new release of signature, 0.13.
signature is a free open-source producer of dynamic signatures for
livening up your e-mail and news postings. It enables you to sign
your messages with a different sig every time.
signature allows you to define a signature template containing static
and placeholder text, the latter of which will be dynamically replaced
by the output of fortune(6) or any other program whenever a signature
is required.
As an alternative, you can also create your own quote file containing
your favourite tag lines.
User-visible changes from 0.12 to 0.13:
* white space at the end of lines is now trimmed
* ^H (backspace) and _ characters are now ignored in fortune text
* added a couple of debugging messages
* fixed bug that caused FIFO and quote file not to be found when using
-f and -q
The software can be obtained from:
http://www.caliban.org/files/signature/signature-0.13.tar.gz
RPM format packages can be obtained from:

Workshop on Real Time Operating Systems and Applications,
Second Real Time Linux Workshop
November 27-28, 2000
Walt Disney World
Orlando, Florida, USA
http://www.thinkingnerds.com/projects/rtos-ws/rtos-ws.html
Dear reader,
As followup to the first real time linux workshop in Vienna, a workshop
expanding to all flavors of Real Time Operating Systems will be held at
the RTSS 2000 in Orlando. The goal is to bring together developers and
users, present new developments, discuss "real" user demands and get to
know those anonymous people only existing as email folders on your mail
archive. Generalizing the workshop-scope to all flavors of Real Time OS
should encourage the presentation and comparison of applications runing
on any system. Finally, launching the Real Time Linux Consortium is on
the schedule, as platform to focus Real Time Linux development efforts.
