Subject: ObjectThread Beta 0.1.0 released on sourceforge
Date: Thu,  8 Jun 2000 17:26:49 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I'm pleased to announce the availability of ObjectThread beta 0.1.0 -- a
C++ threading toolkit for Linux & Windows released under the LGPL.
ObjectThread is a small toolkit dedicated to providing simple but
powerful threading facilities. The current version includes the
following classes (among others):

AutoPtr                    (Thread-safe reference counted/auto delete
pointer)
Barrier                    (With auto-execute action)
CancelState/Type Guards
Condition
Custom exceptions
Messenger (Used to send messages with notifiers - see
below)
Mutex & auto-release Guard
Notifier                   (Event based wakeup mechanism)
   CallbackNotifier
   SeqNotifier
   SemNotifier
   StandardNotifier
       FDNotifier          (Linux/UNIX only)
       EventNotifier       (Win32 only)
Publisher                  (Very useful Publisher/Subscriber class)
RWLock & auto-release Guard
Semaphore
Sequence
   LockedQueue             (Customized/synchronized version of
std::queue)
   LockedStack             (Customized/synchronized version of
std::stack)
   LockedPrioQueue         (Customized/synchronized version of
std::priority_queue)
Thread (Base class of all threads)
ThreadPool
Timer

This toolkit was designed to be a simple yet extensible framework -- it
is easy to add your own notifier, sequence, etc and they will all fit
into the library seamlessly.

The 'Tests' directory contains a set of unit tests that also serve as
useful examples for learning the toolkit.

ObjectThread is currently tested on the following systems/compilers:

Linux:
    gcc-2.95.1+ (Makefile included)

Win32 (Win 98/NT 4.0):
    MSVC++ 5.0 (.dsw included),
    Borland C++ 5.02 (.ide included)

On Win32, ObjectThread uses a pthreads-like virtual machine to implement
thread interaction and cancellation (async cancellation works on Win32,
also).

OT can now be found on sourceforge. To download it, go to
http://sourceforge.net and click on "New Releases" in the upper
left-hand corner. It has just been released, so it should be near the
top of the list. The latest release is beta-0.1.0.

Build and installation instructions are included in the README file.

If you have any questions, requests, comments, suggestions, feel free to
email me at jnye@nbnet_nb_ca (replace '_' with '.').

Cheerio,
Jason

From: Antonio Larrosa <antlarr@arrakis.es>
Subject: Kalamaris 0.6.0 - An advanced mathematics research framework
Date: Thu,  8 Jun 2000 18:22:37 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hello,

This is the announce of Kalamaris 0.6.0, a mathematics research framework
which is similar to Mathe**tica in some aspects, while offering a new approach
to solve mathematical problems and simulate physics models in an easy way.

Kalamaris is a new generation scientific framework that try to be
at the same time fast and precise on numerical problems and elegant on
symbolic algebraic operations.

Kalamaris is a KDE application with an easy to use and intuitive interface.

The main features are:

- - Matrix support (and even matrices inside matrices)
- - The user can define his/her own functions and variables
- - Evaluates functions numerically or symbolic
- - Plots (and animates) functions or sets of data in 2D (with zoom)
- - Symbolic derivatives
- - Solves systems of differential equations using various numerical methods
  (Runge-Kutta 3/4, Fehlberg 7/8, Adams-Bashforth, etc.)
- - Animates sets of data in a 3D viewer (using Mesa) using an advanced UI
- - Thanks to a DCOP interface, you can write scripts in python, perl or even
  shell scripts to send commands to Kalamaris.

Kalamaris also has a client-server architecture which will allow to have a
server running on a fast computing server while clients run on desktop
computers (this is already working some way)

The homepage of Kalamaris is at http://www.arrakis.es/~rlarrosa/kalamaris.html

To run it, you'll need a recent kdelibs snapshot from KDE's CVS (the Konfucious
or Kleopatra releases will also work), as well as Qt 2.1.x, Qt's openGL
extension, Mesa, and libgmp. Everything is available with a free license
from the respective ftp site.

The lsm file follows :

From: Chris Lowth <chris@lowth.com>
Subject: protector - 1.00 -- GPLed e-mail virus protection
Date: Thu,  8 Jun 2000 18:24:09 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi,

Protector 1.00 has been released as an "alpha test" release (early release
for testing and review) for RedHat 6.0, 6.1 and 6.2 systems.

For information and download, visit: http://www.lowth.com/protector

Protector checks incoming e-mail messages for attachments that could
contain viruses, worms etc - and replaces the offending attachments with
standard warning messages before being passed to "procmail" for local
delivery. The original "dangerous" attachment is saved in a directory that
only the root user can access.

Protector is NOT a virus scanner in the traditional sense: It does NOT
scan attachments for virus signatures, but blocks attachments that could
contain viruses. So *.exe, *.vba etc attachments don't get through.
Protector blocks the ILOVEYOU and similar viruses from being delivered.
This means that you don't have to keep protector up to date to stay
protected against the growing tide of new viruses and worms.

Protector does not work by blocking listed types, but by blocking ALL BUT
the listed types. For details of the attachment types "allowed through",
please refer to the web site.

The logic employed by protector to determine the file types contained in
attachments is based on a modified version of the "file" command, and a
number of type-specific validation programs - it does not rely on the
actual name of the file, or the "content-type" declared in the attachment
header. It also looks inside ZIP, TAR and other archive formats, and
checks the files contained in them.

Some types of files are allowed through only under certain conditions. The
main example being that MS Word documents are blocked if they contain ANY
macros, but allowed through otherwise.

Note that this is an early "for review" release. The list of "accepted"
file types is currently rather small (but growing), and the protection
logic is being refined with time.

It isn't perfect yet, but it's a start. Assistance in developing the
checking logic for new file types is invited.

Chris.

Subject: Cilk-5.3 - ANSI C-based language for multithreaded parallel programming
Date: Thu,  8 Jun 2000 18:58:52 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I am pleased to announce the availability of Cilk-5.3.

Cilk is a language for multithreaded parallel programming based on
ANSI C. Cilk is designed for general-purpose parallel programming,
but it is especially effective for exploiting dynamic, highly
asynchronous parallelism. This 5.3 release contains the Cilk
compiler, the Cilk runtime system, and example programs.

Cilk has been developed since 1994 at the MIT Laboratory for Computer
Science by Prof. Charles E. Leiserson and his group. Besides being
used for research and teaching, Cilk was the system used to code the
three world-class chess programs *Tech, *Socrates, and Cilkchess.
Over the years, implementations of Cilk have run on computers ranging
from networks of Linux laptops to an 1824-nodes Intel Paragon.

The current Cilk-5.3 release runs on symmetric multiprocessor (SMP)
machines that support Posix threads, GNU make, and gcc. Cilk-5.3 was
developed and tested mainly on GNU/Linux, IRIX, Digital Unix, and
Solaris/SPARC, but porting Cilk to other Unix systems where the GNU
compilation tools are available should be quite easy. You can also
run Cilk-5.3 on uniprocessor machines. This configuration is useful
for program development and debugging, even though you will not get
any parallel speedup.

This release of Cilk is targeted at the computing community at large,
and not only at parallel-computing specialists. We tried to make Cilk
easy to install and to use. If you know the C language, you should be
able to write simple parallel Cilk programs quickly.

To download Cilk-5.3 and for up-to-date information, please
visit the Cilk web page at

        http://supertech.lcs.mit.edu/cilk

Regards,
Matteo Frigo

Subject: CoreLinux++ 0.4.23 Released
Date: Thu,  8 Jun 2000 18:55:00 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

CoreLinux++ enables SemaphoreGroup sharing across multiple processes
with 0.4.23

General: CoreLinux++ (http://corelinux.sourceforge.net) is an initiative
to normalize methods and conventions for OOA/OOD/C++ development for
Linux, materialized in documentation, OO analysis and design models, and
a set of Open Source C++ class libraries (libcorelinux++ and
libcoreframework++) to support common patterns and exploit the C++
standards.

News: With this release we have enabled the sharing of CoreLinux++
SemaphoreGroups and Semaphores across multiple processes. Some inteface
changes were needed to accomplish, althought they are basically minor.

CoreLinux++ uses the LGPL license to minimize restrictions on
application use and extension.

Focus for the library development will continue to focus on the
completion of the Linux particular service abstractions (Threads,
Semaphores, Signals, SharedMemory, and Module loading). We are still
looking for developers interested in contributing to this Open
Development and Open Source Software project.

Full details of the project can be viewed from our the home page at
http://corelinux.sourceforge.net where you can also download the source
and documentation.
