Subject: Dx-0.1 (alpha) database system
Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 00:26:20 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The first alpha release (version 0.1) of the Dx Database System is available.
The software and documentation are available at:
http://www.dss.bc.ca/dx
Dx is a database for Linux, FreeBSD, and other systems, that is based on
extensible hashing, provides a relatively simple user interface, and is
distributed as an embeddable C or C++ library. In these aspects, it is
similar in spirit to the databases in the *dbm family (including tdbm, written
by the same author), but it is much more sophisticated than most of them and
offers some unique features.
Among the interesting features are:
o Immense databases striped over a huge number of file systems can be created
(RAID level 0). When configured to use 64 bits internally, you will almost
certainly reach disk space capacity limits or operating system limits before
exceeding Dx's capacity.
o A data item, which can be anything, is stored and accessed using an
arbitrary key.
o Flexible ways of storing and retrieving data are provided. New data can be
inserted anywhere in a stored value. Any contiguous region of a stored
value can be retrieved.
o Data can be streamed into and out of the database; the application does not
need to tell Dx how much data there will be and the data does not need to
be in memory all at once.
o Sophisticated data editing functionality is provided. A region of a stored
value can be overwritten or replaced with new data.
o Keys can be segregated into "keyspaces", allowing small databases to be
combined into a single physical database.
o A "frame memory" subsystem provides a way of preventing memory leakage
and allows dynamically allocated memory to truly be freed and released
to the operating system. As a bonus, persistent dynamically-allocated
memory functionality is provided.
o High performance is paramount. Databases running out of main memory, rather
than the file system, can be used.
o Dx has a small memory footprint.

"cgipasswd" allows users to change their un*x password by a web interface.
A lot has been changed since the last public release (0.001).
* cgipasswd is a independent program now, it doesn't use "chpasswd" to
update the password files.
* it is possible to create custom error messages.
* you can set the minimum uid in the config file.
* The current version ( 1.0 beta1 ) has been tested on Debian GNU/Linux
2.1 & Sun Solaris 2.7.
cgipasswd is available at http://www.digibel.org/~staf/eng_cgipasswd.html

Subject: LJOS - Java and database integration (the first public snapshot)
Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 00:36:08 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The first public snapshot of LJOS is available for download at
http://download.sourceforge.net/ljos
Choose the latest snapshot if more than one available. Snapshot archive files
contain the date and time of preparation in their names:
ljos-snapshot-DDMMYYYY-HHMM.tar.gz. You need to have the Postgres95 (v6.5.3 is
recommended) database installed and configured on your system to run LJOS.You
need at least JDK1.1 compatible Java runtime to compile LJOS.
LJOS stands for a sequence of the words: Linux, Java, Operating System. The
LJOS project is an attempt to create a consistent opensource Java Technology-
oriented environment for Linux tightly integrated with a database. This
snapshot is not directed to end users; on the contrary it is directed to
experimenting developers who would like to join the project to put it into
usable state.

Subject: COMMERCIAL: PC Radio & Software for Linux Shipping
Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 00:34:31 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Dxtra Press Release: (www.dxtra.com):
Now you can control and listen to a powerful DSP "black box" radio via a
standard serial port connection, or remote control it over a LAN! You can
listen to literally thousands of Worldband (i.e.shortwave) radio stations on
your Linux box. WorldStation(TM) is a state-of-the-art software control
program written in Pure Java and runs on any modern Linux release (Red Hat,
Mandrake, Caldera etc.). A custom installer gets you up and running in
minutes. Our Linux customers uniformly praise the sophisticated "look and
feel" and performance of our software.
WorldStation(TM) 1.2 plus the RX-320 PC radio can be purchased from our web
site at a special bundled price of only $349.95. This combination easily
rivals the performance of $1,000+ table-top radios. Since the radio has no
front-panel and is controlled by software, a major cut in price is passed
onto consumers. Our web-site has extensive product information showing Linux
screen shots of the software, as well as reviews of the RX-320 PC radio.
Why listen to just local AM and FM stations when you can have the whole
world at the click of a mouse? We ship anywhere in the world.
