Ensemble 0.70

  Homepage: http://www.cs.cornell.edu/Info/Projects/Ensemble/index.html
  Download: ftp://cs.cornell.edu/pub/ensemble/

[Currently, only a source release is available for v0.70. An RPM will
be made available shortly.]

Ensemble is a toolkit for building reliable distributed applications.
It has been available for free public release since 1996 and has been
used in commercial products, research projects, and for teaching.

Ensemble provides a library of protocols that can be used for quickly
building complex distributed applications. A simple way to see what
Ensemble does is to try out the "ensemble" demonstration program
(included in the distribution). You can run several instances of
this program and see them find each other and allow you to send
messages back and forth, detect failures, etc.... For more
information, see the tutorial (tut.ps).

When using Ensemble as a library, an application registers 10 or so
event handlers with Ensemble, and then the Ensemble protocols handle
the details of reliably sending and receiving messages, transferring
state, implementing security, detecting failures, and managing
reconfigurations in the system.

             Gwydion Dylan 2.3.3 (Development Release)
                 Advanced Free Software Development Tools

Apr 12 2000 -- Gwydion Dylan is a portable, optimizing Dylan<tm>
compiler. It was originally written by the Gwydion Group at CMU and is now
maintained by volunteers. Eventually, we'd like Gwydion Dylan to become a
top-notch tool for building complicated applications written in a mix of
Dylan and C.

The current release is a development release. This means that the
different projects we're working on are not finished, not documented
or buggy. Nevertheless lots of bugs have been fixed and functionality
added, so if you don't mind a little adventure, this release is
definitely for you. For details, see the NEWS file in the source
distribution.

This release is the first official version that includes MacOS support
for both mindy and d2c. MacOS X mindy is also working. Endless bugs
have been fixed, and we're moving towards common-dylan compliance
(this eventually should give you full source code compatibility with
Functional Developer). For more details, see the changelog.

From: John in SD <johninsd@hotmail.com>
Subject: LILO 21.4 update
Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 21:35:06 GMT
Reply-To: johninsd@hotmail.com

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

LILO version 21 by Werner Almesberger has been updated to support
booting from large capacity disks using a new 'lba32' option (-L new
command line switch). Dubbed version 21.4, the source code is
available for download from:

   ftp://sd.dynhost.com/pub/linux/lilo (developer's site)
   ftp://brun.dyndns.org/pub/linux/lilo (an alias)

Or from the main distribution site:

   ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/lilo

The lilo-21.4.2 release fixes problems that have affected a few
people:

1. The command line passed to the kernel was truncated at 78
characters if the LARGE_EBDA (Extended BIOS Data Area) compile-time
option was used. (With today's big kernels, this was the default.)

2. If both 'linear' and 'compact' were specified, the second stage
loader would encounter disk I/O error 0x40.

Enhancements include:

3. The boot loader now understands octal. The kernel has always
understood octal, decimal, and hexadecimal, but prior boot loaders
only supported the last two.

4. All patches from the RedHat 6.2 distribution have been applied.
This includes the RAID support.

This version of LILO will boot from partitions beyond the 1024
cylinder limit. To do this it requires a post-1998 BIOS with support
for the EDD packet call interface. Older systems may employ "soft"
BIOS support for these calls with hard disk boot software such as
EZ-DRIVE(tm) or MaxBlast(tm).

The LessTif Core Team is pleased to announce Release 0.90.0 of the
LessTif library.

This is a major release, many bugs have been fixed since the previous
release. Also the binary distributions for Linux are packaged slightly
differently.

LessTif is a LGPL'd implemention of the OSF/Motif standard GUI toolkit
for X11 on unix. LessTif aims to be source compatible with Motif 1.2.
Some Motif 2.0 compatible API's are working as well.

At this point, most of the 1.2 API is working and in place, and many
Motif apps compile and run out of the box with LessTif. The LessTif
Core team is interested in hearing about Motif 1.2 applications which
don't work with LessTif. Bug reports are welcome; patches are even
more welcome.

More information, source code, and binaries for several platforms are
available at:

Overview

`help2man' is a tool for automatically generating simple manual pages
from program output.

It is intended to provide an easy way for software authors to include
a manual page in their distribution without having to maintain that
document.

Given a program which produces resonably standard `--help' and
`--version' outputs, `help2man' will attempt to re-arrange that output
into something which resembles a manual page.

The Hard Disk Upgrade Mini How-To has been updated. The new version is
number 2.11, dated 13 April 2000.

This document explains how to copy, or migrate, a Linux system from one
hard disk to another, for example when replacing a small hard disk with
a larger one. It has been tested with Red Hat 6.0, Debian 2.1, Slackware
3.5 and SuSE 6.2, and contains specific instructions for each of these
distributions.

The Mini How-To is currently available at the co-author's WWW site at:

http://www.storm.ca/~yan/Hard-Disk-Upgrade.html
    (HTML version)

http://www.storm.ca/~yan/Hard-Disk-Upgrade
    (plain text)

It will soon be available from the Linux Documentation Project archives
at:

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Hard-Disk-Upgrade.html
    (HTML version)

http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/mini/Hard-Disk-Upgrade
    (plain text)

and all LDP mirrors.

Principal changes in this version: Use of "tar" to copy hard disks no
longer recommended due to a bug.

Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 21:50:15 GMT
Reply-To: walt@imagine1.com

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

A new version of the F compiler for Linux
is available for download from

ftp://www.meltingsand.com/pub/F/f_linux.tar.gz

This version should eliminate the problem
with the libraries.

No other modifications have been made: it
still has the same features (and bugs). On
our "to do" list: fix the small number of
known bugs, implement some F95 features, and
perhaps add a few F90 features.

It has not been tested extensively. Please
let us know about problems. Thanks.
