LIRC - Linux Infrared Remote Control, Version: 0.6.0
Copyright (C) 1996 Ralph Metzler <rjkm@thp.uni-koeln.de>
Copyright (C) 1998-2000 Christoph Bartelmus <lirc@bartelmus.de>
(according to GNU General Public Licence 2.0 or later)
LIRC is a package that allows you to decode and send infra-red signals
of many (but not all) commonly used remote controls.
Pre-release versions are currently available at the LIRC homepage:
http://fsinfo.cs.uni-sb.de/~columbus/lirc/
Former versions focussed on home-brew hardware connected to the serial
or parallel port. Descriptions how to build this hardware can be found
on the LIRC homepage. Current versions of LIRC also support a variety
of other hardware. The state of the drivers for this hardware however
differs very much. Support for the following devices is very stable:
Home-brew serial and parallel port hardware, Irman, Anir Multimedia
Magic, Packard Bell receivers, PixelView RemoteMaster. The drivers
for the following TV cards might still have problems and are not
tested very well: many Hauppauge models, Fly Video 98. Experimental
drivers for the Logitech/AST and built-in IrDA ports (SIR mode) is
also included.
The most important part of LIRC is the lircd daemon that will decode
IR signals received by the device drivers and provide the information
on a socket. It will also accept commands for IR signals to be sent if
the hardware supports this. The second daemon program called lircmd
will connect to lircd and translate the decoded IR signals to mouse
movements. You can e.g. configure X to use your remote control as an
input device.
The user space application will allow you to control your computer
with your remote control. You can send X events to applications, start
programs and much more on just one button press. The possible
applications are obvious: Infra-red mouse, remote control for your TV
tuner card or CD-ROM, shutdown by remote, program your VCR and/or
satellite tuner with your computer, etc. I've heard that MP3 players
are also quite popular these days.
Adding new remotes is still problematic but since version 0.5.2 there
comes the first program that will try to add new remote controls
automatically.
Don't expect much documentation. This is only a pre-release version
and there is still much to be done before LIRC becomes easily
configurable and usable.
For people with a little C/C++ knowledge this should already be possible
with this pre-release. Otherwise, wait for version 1.0.

Subject: permafrost-1.0 released, script to manage file permissions
Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 13:40:31 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Announcing permafrost-1.0, a puny perl hack to maintain file
permissions and ownerships.
permafrost traverses directory trees and compares the permissions
and ownership (both user and group) of files it finds with
specifications from a configuration file. If the actual state doesn't
match the specification, permafrost issues a warning message, and
optionally fixes the actual state so as to match the specification.
permafrost was born when I got sick of the complexity and bugs of
cfengine (this was the only purpose I used it for).
The name has something to do with "freezing permissions". :-)
Get it from
ftp://ftp.prosa.it/people/itz/
(if that doesn't work, contact me by mail and I'll give alternate location).
permafrost is free software, covered by the GPL.

Subject: Re: tdb: a text database tool - also ANSI to/from K&R C conversion
Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 13:44:44 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Normally, I would respond to an individual question via e-mail, but it
appears that my original posting was not clear enough about exactly what tdb
is. tdb is my non relational "text database" engine and report writer; it
is not a product that you can buy - it's not even freeware - it's just
free. I posted the newsgroup message to solicit feedback from interested
people - on the data access methodology in particular.
I also wouldn't normally have posted this explanation message to all the
original newsgroups (only to the follow up one). I'm doing so this time
because I've had some feedback that people thought tdb was for sale.
Also, in case anyone has downloaded the C source code and was surprised to
learn that it had been "obfuscated", please visit my "Notes on the C source
code" link. It is explained there that you can have the real code when you
e-mail me your constructive feedback.
tdb is the descendent of the analysis and report program that was used to
analyze manufacturing faults at a small telecommunications company where I
worked several years ago. If you look at the test programs I supply, you
will see some reports on printed circuit board faults. I thought tdb should
be versatile enough to be able to handle most applications, so I also use
tdb to maintain my timesheets where I currently work. When I first did this
because my employer had no system to do this. Now we are using a major ERP
system, but I continue to maintain both, because I use tdb to check the
other system - and it's about 20 times faster and easier to use (as long as
you know how to use a text editor)!
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following contrived code fragment illustrates the before and after
effect of my code obfuscating program. All but the first comment in the
file is stripped, and all the identifiers that are not keywords, C
functions, etc. have been renamed to Vn, where n is a unique integer. I
think you'll find it nearly impossible to make any sense of the source code
in my download directory.
