Hello,
Every third wednesday of the month, the HCC departement of
Groningen organizes a computer meeting in het Treslinghuis,
Klaprooslaan 120 Groningen. Groningen is situated in the north
eastern part of the Netherlands. Our LUG uses these evenings as
their regular meeting. When you have a possibility to drop by,
please do so.
And bring your computer along!
Hobby Computer Club, HCC is a national dutch organisation with over
130 000 members. This is a regular HCC meeting, not dedicated to

present as well.
These meetings start at 20:00, access is free.

Hello to all c.o.l.a subscribers.
What are your expectations for a new major version number ?
New exciting features, major changes ?
Here what you will get with sadp 3.0.0:
ACTIVE ICON AND DOCKING.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Now you can control SADP and watch visual effects even when the main
window is iconified. This will require colour icon placement support by
your Window Manager. Active icon feature has been tested with the
following window managers: fvwm, fvwm2 (with and without AnotherLevel),
fvwm95, mwm, olwm, AfterStep and WindowMaker. The icon can be easily
docked with WindowMaker.
How about other WMs : twm and kwm[kde] for example? xsadp will work as
usual there: what you choose is what you get. However the following
feature might comfort you:
DUAL ICON MODE - works with any window manager!.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
In this mode, there is no formal relationship between windows: in
particular mini-window and main window can be seen at same time and
either can be chosen to control the player. You can hide and iconify
main window at any time.
NEW DATA BASE STRUCTURE.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
- Provides fast access to data (no need to scan a text file in order
to find an entry)
- Compression options (choose your format or leave uncompressed).
- Multiple preference sets in same disc entry: allow to share data
between users
or select a play list according to current mood. Skip lists are
introduced
- Backward compatibility with upgrades: if DB is extended with the
new features
(in your own application for example), the original player will not
loose the extended
features while editing data.
CD-TEXT and CD-EXTRA
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This is on a very basic level and disabled by default. Contributions
and testing
are welcomed especially in this area.
OTHER
^^^^^^^^
- - Patch for XForms 0.89 - won't loose help panel content. However XForms
0.88
will still be the better choice.
- - Fixed to work with linux kernel 2.3
- - A correct processing for HTML/XML special characters as a part of
CD information
when accessing CD-INDEX
CURRENT SIZE: 336K
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Grew substantially but will still fit into 5.25" DD floppy :-)
And;
S U M M A R Y
=============

Implementing Diskless Workstations in a Linux Environment
by Jim McQuillan & Ron Colcernian
Linux makes a great platform for deploying diskless workstations
that boot from a network server. The goal of the Linux Terminal
Server Project (www.LTSP.org) is to create the administration
tools that will make setting up a diskless workstation easier.
This technology is very important to the success of Linux in
the corporate environment.
We have already saved several customers many thousands of dollars
and it has earned a 1st place award in the First Annual Linux
Solutions contest put on by the Linux Consultants Support and
Resource Center, VarBusiness and LinuxToday.com.
About the presenters:

Subject: aumix 2.2: adjust an audio mixer
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 14:28:58 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I've uploaded aumix 2.2, a program for adjusting an audio mixer from X,
the console, a terminal, the command line or a script. Here are some of
the changes since version 1.21:
* digits 1 to 9 set level at 10% to 90%
* renamed several files so their names don't have underscores
* avoid "Success" error messages
* removed Makefile.manual
* don't treat it as an error when ioctls return values that are neither 0
nor -1
* read mixer before toggling record, for compatibility with ALSA 0.3.0
* disable ALSA hardware muting, since it seems to have been removed from
current ALSA drivers
* added xaumix script for running aumix in a terminal emulator under X
* find soundcard.h in more places, for Solaris (untested) and BSDI
* added Galician (gl) translation
* changed code for Ukrainian locale from ua to uk
* in de, es, pt_BR, ru and ua translations, corrected names of rc files
* added option to configure script to permit translation of dev_label
array and for pretty device names
* added .indent.pro
* added xpm icons
* adjust width of tracks according to number of columns available, even
when ncurses screen is resized
* refresh ncurses screen when user presses control-L
* center labels under tracks
* disabled escape key for quitting, since escape sequences can be broken
up and confused with it
* added dummy.c to simulate a sound driver when one isn't present in the
kernel
* find libcurses on OpenBSD
* on NetBSD and OpenBSD, use _oss_ioctl
* added experimental OpenBSD port
* added changes from FreeBSD port
* added support for sysmouse (mouse on FreeBSD console)
* use unsigned long as type for second argument of dummy_ioctl, for
compatibility with OpenBSD/alpha
* use mdoc macros in aumix.1
* center balance when second mouse button is pressed over balance track
* added gpm-xterm.c, ersatz gpm client for non-Linux xterm-only mouse
support
* added ncurses mouse support, so mouse will work in an xterm on Linux
* enabled use of mouse to leave from keys help screen
* rewrote InitColors to allow "-" to represent black as the background or
white as the foreground
* use wbkgdset() to set background color
* use use_default_colors, and changed default colors to work better with
it (for dark text on light background)
* replaced magic numbers with macros and constants
* use curs_set(0) to make cursor invisible, on terminals which have that
capability
* move cursor to right of "aumix"
* check for both curses.h and ncurses.h so our own curses.h can use the
system's curses.h
* check for string.h instead of strings.h and only check once
* check for awk
* in Inter(), don't use atoi() on an unterminated string
* generate and use config.h
* added GTK+ interface
If you have any feedback, please send it to the mailing list, which is
simply called "aumix" and is on linuxatlax.org (if you can, please check
the archives at http://www.linuxatlax.org/archives/public/aumix/
beforehand). You needn't subscribe to send a message.
The new version is available through the Web page at
http://jpj.net/~trevor/aumix.html and by FTP from
ftp://aumix.sourceforge.net/pub/aumix/stable/.

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Newcomers to Linux are presented with many hurdles that they need
to overcome before they can reap the benefits of this powerful operating
system. Whilst there are many great resources for the Linux newbie,
there exists a need for a simple checklist that answers many of the initial
questions, whilst at the same time providing some sensible advice to get
started.
The Checklist for Newbies is an attempt to help the beginner get Linux
up and running. Nowadays Linux is no harder to install than any other
operating system, but it does require a few simple precautions and a
basic technical knowledge. We are constantly being asked for advice on
this subject - what is the best Linux book for a newbie, which distribution
should I buy, should I avoid certain types of hardware etc.
The Checklist for Newbies aims at providing the Linux newbie with some
unbiased, practical advice. The document is a first draft - we welcome
comments, thoughts and improvements from the Linux community.
Checklist for Newbies can be found at http://www.firstlinux.com/Checklist.shtml
Suggestions should be emailed to sde@linuxlinks.com

Meetings of the Manchester Linux User Group for March and April, 2000.
For more information, see http://www.manlug.man.ac.uk/calendar.html.
18 March 2000, 14:00, usual venue.
A Simple Introduction to The GIMP
Eleanor Baskerville
The GNU Image Manipulation Program allows you to create, edit, and
manipulate images. It can also be used as a paint program, since it
has drawing and painting tools. This presentation is a very simple
introduction for beginners; a more advanced GIMP presentation is
planned for a meeting in the summer.
(Note: For those of you with a decent Internet connection, The GUM
(GIMP User Manual) has recently been updated, and can be found in HTML
and Adobe PDF form at http://manual.gimp.org/. The PDF files are
9.6Meg for the manual and 1.2Meg for the colour plates...)
Linux in Schools
Roger Whittaker (from S.u.S.E)
What I'd like to do is to spend some of that time on Linux in schools
and some of it on a survey of what's happening in general in the world
of Linux and open-source generally (and maybe a bit about SuSE in
particular).
I will discuss the different ways in which schools are beginning to
use Linux and make suggestions as to how people might help their local
schools as well as commenting on some of the oddities of the culture
of IT in schools.
15 April 2000, 14:00, usual place
Linux Networks in the home.
Matthew John Palmer
Many households these days have more than one computer, often
duplicating resources such as printers and modems, and requiring file
sharing via floppy disks. This talk will attempt to show you how to
manage your resources better, by networking the computers together.
It will cover the physical requirements (cabling, hubs, etc) and the
software configuration required for both Linux and Windows. File and
print sharing will be discussed, as well as shared access to the
Internet.
XFree 4.0 - the next generation of free X servers
Dave Gilbert
A major update of XFree has just been released. This talk will talk
about the major developments in this new version, point out some of
the problems and solutions and suggest where to go for help.
XFree is a freely distributable version of the X Window System that
supports many UNIX(R) and UNIX-like operating systems. The X window
system provides the framework on which most Linux systems present
graphical information. Both the GNOME and KDE frameworks run on top
of X on Unix(R) systems.
