Subject: Cactus 4.0 Beta 6 - solving systems of partial differential equations
Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2000 01:16:39 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi,

this is to announce the release of beta 6 of Cactus 4.0.

(This was the code that SGI used to demo their Itanium cluster at
SC99).

Cactus is a general, modular, parallel code for solving systems of partial
differential equations. The code has been developmented over many years by
a large international collaboration of numerical relativity and
computational science research groups and can be used to provide a
portable platform for solving any system of partial differential
equations. The code compiles and runs on a variety of different
platforms, from laptops running Linux or NT to clusters of workstations,
to large T3Es, with no modifications needing to be made to the application
codes.

As an example, one set of modules (thorns) can be used to solve problems
in numerical relativity, for example black hole or neutron star
collisions. The design of the code and the thorns means that general
routines can be written, for example to locate the position of the event
horizon, which can then be made generally available and used for other
problems.

The code is available from

                    http://www.cactuscode.org

For further information, email

cactusmaint@cactuscode.org

Have fun,

Tom

                             by Ti Kan

Take the CD player to the nth dimension.

I am pleased to announce the release of xmcd version 2.6, a package
including xmcd, an X11/Motif-based CD player utility and cda, a
command-line driven, non-graphical CD audio player.

In its evolution over the past few years, xmcd has established itself
as the premier CD player application for the X window system with an
attractive, easy-to-use user interface. It is the most feature-rich
CD player that runs on virtually all of the popular UNIX and OpenVMS
platforms. It also supports the widest array of CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW
devices, including multi-disc changers and some older SCSI-1 drives that
do not work with other CD player applications. The remote CD database
query feature fully utilizes the Internet and taps on the vast repository
of the CDDB(tm) Internet CD database, which is originally pioneered by
xmcd.

Xmcd also features "wwwWarp", the ability to remote control a web browser,
so that you can search and access many useful web resources and information
related to the CD you're listening to. Xmcd literally takes music
enjoyment to a level far beyond the standard stereo.

There are too many features to list, so visit the xmcd web page for
full information, screen snapshot and downloads:

    http://metalab.unc.edu/tkan/xmcd/

Xmcd is FREE, Open Source Software, released under the GNU General Public
License.

                           What is GNU/Linux ?

GNU/Linux is a very powerful operating system that can run on PC
(desktop or laptop), most macintosh, alpha and SPARC stations, etc. It
is a variant of UNIX, which also provides nice graphical interfaces. The
central point is that GNU/Linux is Free Software: not only can you get
it for free (download from the web, cheap cdroms, ...), but you also
have complete access to the sources of all programs. There is a wide
range of applications running on it, including spreadsheets, word
processors, compilers, games, and a huge amount of scientific softwares.
A lot of those applications are also Free Software. Note that Linux and
windows (or other operating systems) can coexists on the same machine
when specific applications are needed.
One of the drawbacks of Linux is that the installation process is not
always easy for a normal user (the installation of windows is not much
easier though...). The purpose of this Linux party is to help people
install and configure Linux on their personal machines. This is done on
a pure volunteer basis, and is free for anybody loosely related to the
Colorado School of Mines (however, you can bring cookies and soft drinks
:-)).

We are very pleased to present you the program for SANE 2000, an international
conference on System Administration and Networking, focused on UNIX and IP
networking. Going through the program, you will find renowned speakers for
many interesting topics. SANE 2000 is the place where you will hear, discuss,
then put to use the latest research, well-thought-out approaches, tools and
techniques for practical system administration and security.

Monday and Tuesday are your true opportunity for in-depth study! For two days,
choose among three tracks of tutorials, covering topics like Perl/Tk, IPSEC,
Sendmail, firewalls, DNS and general UNIX systems administration and led by
experienced and respected instructors like Eric Allman, Jim Reid, Hugh Daniel,
Walter Belgers, Hans van de Looy, Mark Overmeer, Jos Vos and Evi Nemeth.

During the third and fourth day of SANE 2000 you will (after the keynote) be
able to choose from two tracks of interesting presentations: the refereed
papers track or the invited talks sessions. Hear about network management,
security, modern file system techniques, IP internals, (b)leading edge
developments, the use of open source software, and so on.
You will find a remarkable line-up of speakers, including Brian Reid, Jeff
Allen, Eric Allman, Barbara Dijker, Guido van Rooij, Mark Burgess, Joe Greco,
Bastiaan Bakker and many, many more.

On Tuesday and Wednesday you can also stroll along the exhibition area, where
vendors will demonstrate their latest hardware and software products they hope
will help you do your job more efficiently and effectively.

Of course, there's also time to relax. Make sure you don't miss the social
event (and conference dinner) on Wednesday evening. The conference ends on
Thursday afternoon with the "The inSANE Quiz" where keywords like Hilarious!
Fun! Educational! apply. Attend the quiz and be awed by the vast amounts of
absolutely useless knowledge portrayed by the quiz candidates. Or, even
better, register as a potential quiz candidate and test your cognitive powers
against the world's masters of completely useless facts. Try to beat the
reigning champion!

SANE 2000 is hosted in the Maastricht Exposition and Conference Center, MECC,
close to the medieval center of the city of Maastricht, in the south of the
Netherlands, close to the borders with Belgium and Germany.

Please join us. We hope to see you in Maastricht on May 22-25 at SANE 2000!

Dept. of Computer Science, Utrecht University

 Bob Eskes, Program Co-Chair

P.S. register early for the tutorials: they tend to fill up fast!
