Subject: PACT 0.4 - SNMP port accounting package
Date: Mon,  7 Feb 2000 22:22:17 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

PACT - "Port Accounting and Collection Tool" - is a software package to
do complete port accounting for SNMP-manageable devices like routers,
hubs, and switches. Administration is done using an HTML interface with
dynamic data fed through PHP and MySQL database backend.

The following changes have occured since the last announcement (0.2):

V0.4 - 5.2.2000
        - changed some typos in struc.sql (acct1 instead of acct as DB-name)
        - collector now stores localtime in raw database instead of GMT
        - for maximum bytes calculation, collector used an unsigned
          long, which - for fast ethernet - would wrap around in less
          than 6 minutes. Changed to unsigned long long, which should
          allow for a couple of more minutes :-)
        - corrected an error in getacct.php3
        - admin-pages changed to use global config data (inspired by Alain
          Cocconi)
        - new language file for french (tnx to Alain Cocconi)

V0.3 - 31.1.2000
        - two small errors in german language file and accounting-page
          corrected
        - changed date selection to automatically use current year and
          month as default (was hard-coded before)

Subject: sysstat-3.0 - The SAR and IOSTAT commands for Linux
Date: Mon,  7 Feb 2000 22:25:14 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi everybody out there using Linux,

More than two months after the relase of version 2.2, sysstat version 3.0 is
now available on sunsite, for all of you using Linux:

ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/status
69kB sysstat-3.0.tar.gz
71kB sysstat-3.0-1.src.rpm
51kB sysstat-3.0-1.i386.rpm

Since it is a major release, the changes are important: the 'sar' command now
displays the statistics sent by a data collector ('sadc'). Also included now
in the package are scripts ('sa1' and 'sa2') that enable you to automate the
use of 'sar'.

The statistics supplied by 'sar' concern:

 * I/O transfer rates,
 * paging statistics,
 * process creation activity,
 * interrupt statistics (system-wide and per-processor),
 * network interfaces statistics (number of packets and bytes exchanged,
failures that happened,...) ,
 * memory and swap space utilisation,
 * CPU utilization (both UP and SMP machines are fully supported),
 * kernel tables utilization (file handles, inodes, etc.),
 * system switching activity,
 * swapping statistics,
 * system page faults statistics,
 * per-process statistics,
 * TTY device activity.

Other changes are:

 * every record saved in the system activity files has its timestamp now.
System restarts are also recorded,
 * environment variable added so that the year can be displayed with 4 digits
even if you use the C locale,
 * kernel patch used by iostat improved,
 * NLS updated. The available languages are: english, french, german, spanish,
portuguese.

Well, basically we're going to stand outside in the cold and
hand out alternative OS CDs to people attending the Windows
2000 Launch here in St. Louis. Anyone can come. We've been
given 300 CDs by LinuxMall.com and 300 CDs by my employeer.

See the page http://unix.ltlb.com/stlinux for more detailed
information. Warning: it's ugly. But it's temporary, so
why bother making it better, eh?

               INTERNET PHONE FOR LINUX

http://www.linuxmotors.com/phone

Phone is a linux client program that lets you talk with
other people on the internet using voice on a full
duplex connection. The requirements are:

   o  Linux
   o  24000 bits/second or better internet connection
   o Full duplex sound card (you can read and
          write audio data at the same time)
   o Linux support for that sound card (many drivers
          have trouble in full duplex mode)
   o  Microphone
   o  Speakers

Your identity is based on your email address. The
server maintains a database of who is online and
everyone's contact list. You can find out if your
friends are on line if they are in your contact list
and you're in their contact list. Similar to ICQ.

The program is very new and is command line based.
Lots of improvements are planned, should it become
popular. The client is free and open source. The
matching service is free until further notice.

For further information, please send email to the
link at the web site.

Subject: prototype-1.4 Quick generation of Makefiles
Date: Mon,  7 Feb 2000 22:32:13 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Description
- -----------

  The "prototype" package helps you with generating Makefiles.

  The aim of this package is to make it *extremely* easy to create
  new projects, consisting of multiple directories with lots of
  Makefiles - often without the need to edit any Makefile at all.

  The "prototype" package only works together with GNU make and
  gcc/g++ (or egcs); only the Best is good enough :). Obviously this
  is not a problem on linux. You can make your projects more
  portable later, if needed, by starting to use GNU automake instead
  of "prototype".

What's new
- ----------

1.4

A few minor bug fixes: typing `make' in a subdirectory caused the
target `.depend' to be build while checking the `Makefile' target.
This can fail since `INCLUDEFLAGS' is set by the Makefile(s) in the
parent directories now.

Also, it was possible that the dependency on subdirectory objects
caused these object files to be rebuild with the rules of the parent
Makefile. Both bugs have been fixed.

Downloading
- -----------

You can download prototype as well as more documentation and
examples from http://www.xs4all.nl/~carlo17/prototype/

Title: prototype
Version: 1.4
Entered-date: 15MAR99
Description: Prototype Makefiles is a collection of shared Makefiles
             which are installed globally and Makefile templates that
             can be copied into project directories using a simple
             script. The shared Makefiles contain the rules for
             building a project, cleaning it and making dependencies
             etc. The Makefile templates contain the data that is
             specific for each project. This seperation avoids
             duplication of code in Makefiles and is therefore
             extremely easy to maintain and extend.

Subject: A linux driver for IBM TrackPoint devices (GPL)
Date: Mon,  7 Feb 2000 22:38:05 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi.

I just spent some time creating a user mode driver for
the IBM TrackPoint device, i.e. the pointing device of
my ThinkPad 600E. I'd like to bring your attention to the
URL

  http://www-hft.ee.TU-Berlin.DE/~strauman/tp4utils/

where the driver and associated software are discussed.

Till.

............. Overview ....................................

Description:

  `tp4d' is a user mode driver / daemon for IBM TrackPoint
  devices that makes advanced TrackPoint features available
  under the LINUX operating system. Among these features
  is the possibility to map z-axis activity (`pressing the
  stick') to mouse-button events.

  Together with `tp4d' comes `xtp4', a X/GUI program for
  comfortable configuration of the trackpoint settings.

Subject: Xinvest 2.6 - personal finance tracking and performance tool
Date: Mon,  7 Feb 2000 22:39:19 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Announcing the release of Xinvest 2.6. This release contains many new
enhancements:

* Revamped report generator
* Cross currency conversions
* Live cross currency rates from Xquote
* Preference dialog for:
  - enabling/disabling account backup on save
  - currency/date formats for output
  - enabling/disabling use of exchange rates
  - precision of results.
* Lots of minor tweaks and fixes

Check out the Xinvest home page at http://sunsite.auc.dk/xinvest/. Here
you can find the latest source and Linux binary along with other helpful
information on using Xinvest and Xquote.

Primary Site -> http://sunsite.auc.dk/xinvest/
XPM Library  -> ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/libraries
LessTif (Motif clone) -> http://www.lesstif.org/

What is Xinvest?
- ----------------
Xinvest is a personal finance tracking and performance tool for UNIX
using the X Window System. Xinvest requires Motif 1.2 or later and XPM.

With Xinvest you can:

Centralize record keeping by storing all transactions in account
specific files.

Use currency exchange rates, converting accounts from different
currencies into your local one.

Calculate yield, total and annualized returns (including the effects of
buys, sells, and dividends). This provides a means of comparing the
results of all accounts in a portfolio, be they CDs, bonds, mutual
funds, or your
checking account. The report generator allows you to select report
contents and to generate multiple reports simultaneously.

Receive automatic price and currency exchange rate updates with the
Xquote
WWW quote retrieval program (http://sunsite.auc.dx/xinvest/xquote).

Plot various transaction parameters such as share price, shares per
transaction, transaction cost, transaction value (at current price),
dividends, internal and total return, and/or cumulative and moving
averages of the above. Plots are bar graph or x-y line charts.

View asset allocation of accounts in a portfolio. Specify categories,
what percent of an account is in that category, and which accounts are
of
interest and Xinvest will tell you the value and percentage of all
categories in the defined portfolio. Predefined is a account category
to view weighting
of accounts in the total portfolio. Categories are hierarchical, so you
can zoom into the makeup of your portfolio. View in text and pie chart
form.

Use the provided financial calculator with commonly used equations.
Included
are FV, PV, FV of sum of payments, and periodic loan payments.

Hopefully, all of this is displayed using an easy-to-use,
point-and-click
interface. There are few command line switches, no dot files, and X
resources are limited to color and font selection allowing you to tailor
the look of the tool to your own preferences.
