Subject: src2class pre-0.05-alpha released (and new word2x location)
Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 00:06:39 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The first official release of src2class is avialable by HTTP from
http://word2x.alcom.co.uk (via the download page). This was created
for writing the toilet roll to unpack types in M$ file formats
expediciously. It could also be useful for reading other byte packed
file formats.
The code generated is really inefficient as most compilers are not
smart enough to figure out what is going on but has no endian,
alignment restriction, etc issues.
Note that word2x lives at http://word2x.alcom.co.uk and all references
to word2x.astra.co.uk elsewhere are out of date and has been for a
long time. If your web page has one *fix it now*, it has been broken
for far too long already.
checkps has moved to http://checkps.alcom.co.uk due the same ISP
renaming.
P.S. Anyone pedalling one word2x 1.x should *stop it now*. This is
really a really ancient version that *predates* word2x-0.001 (and *much*
less good than the current version).

Subject: apcupsd-3.7.0-beta4 - APC UPS monitoring daemon
Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 00:07:55 GMT
Reply-To: riccardo@master.oasi.gpa.it
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Hello,
This message is to announce the fourth beta version of the Year 2000
apcupsd release:
apcupsd-3.7.0-beta4
This fourth beta version corrects some network problems we have found
few days after beta3 release. We hope this will be the last beta version
before final release. Network code seem to work well.
Apcupsd is a daemon for monitoring APC UPSes. It is able to detect power
failures and shutdown the computer if the UPS power is getting too low.
It is able to shutdown multiple networked computers powered by a single
UPS with the monitoring UPS informing the others via the network.
- - Where you can find it?
ftp://ftp.oasi.gpa.it/pub/apcupsd/development/apcupsd-3.7.0-beta4.tar.gz
- - Highlights of this release.
.. Many network code fixes.
.. Some other minor bug fixes.
- - This is a call for testers.
This is the fourth beta version of what will be released as apcupsd-3.7.0.
The code freeze is in place and will last for a week. In this time we
will address the last few problems that may still be present.
The software is completely developed under Linux and will compile cleanly
and will work under linux.
Porting has been addressed for Solaris and this platform should work.
Porting is being addressed for HP-UX, where the actual code should compile
cleanly and, due to the changes made for Solaris, should work as well.
If you own an APC UPS attached to a Linux machine or you want to realize a
setup like this, or you are already a user of an older version of apcupsd
and you have even a machine on which to install this version, please step
forward. We need testers and any bug report will be more than welcome.
If you own a Solaris or HP-UX machine and you want to attach an APC UPS to
it and try this version of apcupsd, probably you will find that
apcupsd is the best UPS monitoring tool for you.
- - What to do if you find bugs
send an e-mail to one of the developers
or
send an e-mail to apcupsd-devel@ro.com (Developers mailing list)
or
go to the Apcupsd Support Center http://www.brisse.dk/site/apcupsd/
and leave a message (at this time should be the last resort because Brian
is moving and doesn't have time to manage incoming e-mail).
- - Changes from 3.7.0-beta3 to 3.7.0-beta4
Bumped version to beta4 and released.
Fixed a minor po/ problem.
Applied kern diffs, see techlogs/kes13Jan00
Applied kern diffs, see techlogs/kes12Jan00
Fixed CYGWIN detection in configure.in.
Added clean and distclean for distributions/.
Added slackware detection but still manual installation (scripts
generated but no actual installation performed: too dangerous doing
the code without being able to test).
- - Warnings
These are Kern Sibbald's suggestions for beta4 installation in networked
environments.
1. It is important that anyone running the master/slave
network code upgrade to beta4.
2. The new master/slave network protocol is incompatible with
previous versions so all masters and slaves must be updated
simultaneously.
3. We recommend that you remove any modifications that apcupsd
makes to your halt script on each of the slaves. However, on the
master, it is important to keep the changes to the halt script,
namely the call to apcupsd -killpower.
4. Please read the configuration section of the manual
(doc/manual/configure.html) as the interpretation of
TIMEOUT, BATTERYLEVEL, and MINUTES on the slaves
is different from previous versions.
That's all for now.
Ciao,
Riccardo.

Subject: SurfNotes -- Beyond Browser Bookmarks
Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 00:09:19 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
SurfNotes is a web productivity application that works together
with Netscape Navigator/Communicator on Unix platforms. It pro-
vides a convenient interface for taking notes on the web sites
you visit. It allows you to save and retrieve files in a native
format (using Python's 'pickle' or 'cPickle' module), or to
export to HTML.
SurfNotes is available at:
http://www.havenrock.com/softlab/surfnotes/index.html
The current release is a prototype. This means that, while most
of the major features are implemented, it has some serious bugs
that I am aware of, and probably others I am unaware of. I am
making it available to the public mainly in order to obtain some
constructive criticism on the concept.
So please, try it out, abuse it, see what you like and dislike
about it, and let me know!
REQUIREMENTS
Unix or Unix-like OS
Netscape browser
Python with Tkinter (required) and tkFont (optional but highly
recommended)
Tcl/Tk
So far it has been tested only on Linux (Red Hat 5.2) with
Python 1.5.2, Tcl/Tk 8.0, and Netscape Communicator 4.61. It
probably requires Python 1.5 or later, and Tcl/Tk 8.0 or later.
Different flavors of Unix, Linux distributions, or earlier/later
versions of Netscape should not be a problem.

Subject: libjeeps - Communication and math library for GPS (Garmin)
Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 00:05:24 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
JEEPS is a UNIX-based Garmin GPS communication and analysis function
library and development system. It was written under Linux but also
works on other platforms including SGI/Solaris/OSF.
This ALPHA TEST library is written in ANSI C and has both
communication and cartographic components. The LGPL source code plus
an application demonstrating its use is available from:
ftp.hgmp.mrc.ac.uk pub/ajb/jeeps/
ftp://ftp.hgmp.mrc.ac.uk/pub/ajb/jeeps/
Current distribution file: jeeps-0.0.1.tar.gz
Features of JEEPS are:
a) High level host communications routines treating waypoints, almanacs
etc as objects.
b) Retrieval and sending of objects
c) Designed to work with all Garmin GPS models automatically. Detection
of the protocols a GPS supports.
d) Portability: Uses GNU configuration tools. Big and little endian
compliance built-in
e) Datum conversions (over 100 datums and 27 ellipsoids)
f) Cartographic functions
g) A development environment for other applications and an open
source repository for contributed library functions.
The library has all the Garmin Interface Specification link, command,
application protocols and data types coded in a hierarchical form. It
should therefore work with all current (adhering to Garmin Interface
Specification December 16th 1999) Garmin models. It is also easy to
extend should new Garmin GPS devices be produced with different
protocols and data types. Financial constraints prevent me from
purchasing the entire range therefore any reports of failure with
various models will be appreciated (but please give full details
including all the information the utility program shows for protocols
[if you can run the program]). NMEA support will be added.
Cartographic functions and coordinate systems of general use (e.g.
cartesian, Molodensky, Transverse Mercator, UTM etc) and parochial use
(UK OS, Irish Grid etc) are implemented.
Any constructive criticism, bug reports, contributions (library or
applications) etc are welcomed. Contact:

Subject: cruft-0.2 - file encryption package
Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 00:11:10 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
With the new liberalized Bureau of Export Administration encryption
regulations now in effect, I am finally able to release my "cruft" file
encryption package for Linux and generic UNIX. This is a medium security
symmetrical block cipher system, based on the "one-time pad" algorithm,
useful mainly for non-critical encryption of files on a workstation
or network. Open Source / GPL, of course. The 'lsm' file follows.
Begin4
Title: cruft - a replacement for the missing UNIX 'crypt' command
Version: 0.2
Entered-date: 2000-01-14
Description: Linux and other free UNIX systems often ship with the 'crypt'
command deleted because of Dept. of Commerce restrictions
on anything that even hints at strong encryption. The
'cruft' package is intended as a drop-in replacement for
'crypt', being equivalent in functionality and even easier
to use than the original. It is unnecessary to specify
whether the target file is to be encrypted or decrypted,
as this is autodetected. The length of the key chosen and
the frequency with which the (random) key file is changed
determines the encryption "strength" of 'crypt'. Despite
being theoretically unbreakable, this implementation of
the onetime pad cipher should be regarded as only medium
in its security level because a) it writes a nine byte
characteristic signature as a header to encrypted files,
and b) the keys generated use the 'gcc' random function,
which is not, in fact, all that random. This is more than
sufficient security for non-critical files on a network
or workstation, but don't trust the crown jewels to it.
This package is released in full compliance with the revised
BXA regulations on encryption software, as of 01/14/00.

Subject: Solution for ring-initiated demand dial
Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 00:51:50 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Ever wish you could make your demand-dial system dial on an incoming
ring? This would be handy for remote administration, or to access
your machine at home from work.
I worked out a solution and thought it might be of general interest.
See http://www.sunsetsystems.com/tip-dial.html.
Cheers!
