About Linux
Linux is a co-operatively developed operating system used worldwide.
It was started by Mr. Linus Torvalds in Finland in 1991. In
1998 Linux was the fastest-growing server operating environment,
growing more than 212 percent in that year alone (IDC).
Applications of Linux vary from home use to fully functional
UNIX workstations and Internet servers. The difference between Linux
and other operating systems is that Linux is open source software.
Best Linux is developed and maintained under GPL license as a freely
distributable software and is also available on the Internet,
free-of-charge.
About SOT Finnish Software Engineering Ltd.
Founded in 1991, SOT is based in Finland, where it builds and
maintains the Best Linux distribution. Working in cooperation with
a huge team of research, academic and commercial software
development volunteers over the Internet, SOT's goal is to build an
easier, more advanced distribution of the Linux operating system that
is also simple to administer. Along with the operating system SOT
offers Linux training, commercial support and consulting services to
individuals and companies exploiting the power of Linux. SOT's own
hardware manufacturing operations in Tallinn, Estonia and Tampere,
Finland enable it to provide complete ready-to-use Linux solutions
and ensure an up-to-date knowledge of PC hardware.

Subject: epkg-1.0 - package manager for the Encap package management system
Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2000 22:16:30 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
I am pleased to announce the release of epkg-1.0.
epkg is a free, open source package manager which uses the Encap
package management system. The Encap system provides a completely
automated way to install, remove, upgrade, and share third-party
software packages by using symbolic links. Encap is simple and
flexible for system administrators to use, as well as being completely
transparent to users.
This release of epkg falls on the 18 month anniversarry of the initial
public release of epkg-0.1 beta. During this time, it has matured
into a powerful, robust, and portable tool. Here at the University of
Illinois, epkg is used in a production environment under AIX, HP-UX,
and Solaris. I have also received reports from people around the
world who use it on other platforms.
The epkg package manager can be obtained from:
http://encap.cso.uiuc.edu/epkg/
It is available as both source code and binary Encap packages for a
variety of platforms.
For more information on the Encap package management system, please
see the WSG Encap Archive:
http://encap.cso.uiuc.edu/
Enjoy!

INTERNET CONTEST TO PROMOTE WORLDWIDE SPREAD OF DVD SOFTWARE FOR LINUX
December 30, 1999
For Immediate Release
In response to baseless legal threats by the motion picture industry,
Internet users have begun a worldwide contest to develop creative
methods to distribute free software to play DVD movies under Linux. The
contest is based in the Bay Area and will be judged by local Linux and
Internet experts.
An industry organization called the DVD CCA recently attempted to get
a temporary restraining order to prohibit Internet distribution of DVD
software for Linux, even though it the software is only useful for
playing DVD movies, not for copying one DVD to another, and was written
from scratch, not by violating the copyright of any previous software.
There have been no reported cases of anyone using Linux software to make
illegal copies of DVD movies -- only to watch them.
The three winners of the contest will be the person who distributes the
most copies of DVD software for Linux, and the people who develop the
best "high-tech" and the best "low-tech" methods for doing do.
"The contest is a direct response to legal bullying by DVD CCA," said
organizer Donald B. Marti Jr. "A well-financed industry organization is
threatening independent web sites, when Linux users are only trying to
watch the movies they already paid for."
There have been no reports of anyone using Linux software to make
illegal copies of DVD movies -- only to watch them.
The Great International DVD Source Code Distribution Contest web site is
located at: http://dvd.zgp.org/
The prizes will be DVD movies.

Subject: ImageMagick 5.1.0 - tools and libraries for image reading/writing/manipulation
Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2000 22:22:11 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
The ImageMagick Studio development group is proud to announce the
release of ImageMagick 5.1.0. The development of ImageMagick 5.1.0 was
an intense effort which resulted in a complete re-write of the
ImageMagick internals in order to provide the foundation needed to
support the evolving requirements of the next millennium. We know little
about what the next millennium will bring, but one thing that we do know
is that images to be processed will be bigger than ever before, and
that's what ImageMagick 5.1.0 delivers!
ImageMagick is a robust collection of tools and libraries to read,
write, and manipulate an image in many image formats (over 67 major
formats) including popluar formats like TIFF, JPEG, PNG, PDF, Photo CD,
and GIF. With ImageMagick you can create images dynamically, making it
suitable for Web applications. You can also resize, rotate, sharpen,
color reduce, or add special effects to an image and save your completed
work in the same or differing image format. Image processing operations
are available from the command line, as well as through C, C++, and
PERL-based programming interfaces.
ImageMagick is copyrighted by ImageMagick Studio, a nonprofit
organization. ImageMagick is available for free, may be used to support
both open and proprietary applications, and may be redistributed without
fee.
The ImageMagick WWW page is

ImageMagick 5.1.0 is available via ftp as
ftp://ftp.wizards.dupont.com/pub/ImageMagick/ImageMagick-5.1.0.tar.gz
Other versions are available as

These are the new features in 5.1.0:
Internal changes:
o Image sizes are limited by physical memory plus available disk
space on the machine, the limitations of the image file format,
or the file addressing limits of the operating system,
whichever comes first. This means that if you can figure out
how to build a big enough machine (and have plenty of time)
terabyte images can be processed.
o An image cache subsystem and API are provided to map portions
(as small as one pixel or as large as the entire image) of
images into memory and to save any updates.
o Memory mapping is used to access files. This is the most
efficient access mechanism available.
o DirectColor pixels are now stored in an efficient 32-bit
structure (or 64-bit when QuantumLeap is enabled).
o PseudoColor indices are now stored separately from the
DirectColor pixels (PseudoColor and DirectColor representations
are still available simultaneously).
o In-memory run-length encoding is eliminated.
o Compressed images are decompressed and compressed incrementally
in order to limit memory consumption.
o Lots of minor C API fixes and improvements.
External changes:
o Cache threshold setting for setting the boundary between use of
RAM or RAM + disk when processing an image:
- Use the --with-cache option (e.g. --with-cache=160) to
set the compiled-in default when running the configure script.
- Use -cache for ImageMagick utilities
- Set the cache_threshold attribute in PerlMagick
- Set the cacheThreshold attribute in Magick++
o The identify utility now displays precise read-time values.
o The Win32 build environment (now called "VisualMagick") is
completely re-done and supports building both DLL as well as static
libraries.
Related changes:
o Magick++ 0.9.1 is included in the ImageMagick package.
ImageMagick is developed by the members of the ImageMagick Studio
team:
John Cristy - Principal designer and author
Bob Friesenhahn - Magick++, configuration, CVS, tests, bug tracking
William Radcliffe - VisualMagick, FlashPix, TIFF, timers, watermarking
Glenn Randers-Pehrson - PNG, MNG, and test script improvements
as well as many individual contributors, some of whom made major
contributions to ImageMagick but shall remain nameless anyway.
