Japanese Application Suite Enhanced For Students And Schools
ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA -- December 30, 1999 -- Lava Software is now shipping
Japanese WordMage (TM) v5.7, a complete low-cost Japanese application suite
for MacOS, Windows 95/98/NT/2000 and Linux. New features include the 'Kanji
Safari' multiplayer game, interactive storybooks, reading, aural and visual
comprehension exercises, and a powerful new vocabulary import filter. Many
features now support the extended European, Cyrillic and Greek character
sets (in addition to Japanese), making Japanese WordMage also suitable for
students of French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Greek, etc.
All The Applications You Need In One Great Package
Japanese WordMage offers nine highly integrated applications including a
multilingual wordprocessor, a HTML web page editor / viewer, various study
systems with authoring abilities (interactive storybooks, auto-revision
flashcards, the 'Kanji Safari' multiplayer game and reading, aural and
visual comprehension exercises), a powerful Kanji reference dictionary, a
grammar library builder and a text translation aid.
Japanese WordMage does not require Japanese operating system software as it
contains its own multilingual input system, fonts, etc., making it
cost-effective and easy to install and upgrade. It can also be customised to
most European (and other romanised) languages, allowing European schools to
generate custom course materials for their students in their native
language. For example, Swedish-Japanese dictionaries or German-English
comprehension-type exercises can be created in minutes.
Students with laptop computers can now study anywhere, anytime using
Japanese WordMage, whilst teachers can easily create custom course materials
(or import existing materials) which conform exactly to their requirements.
Japanese WordMage also supports the distribution of course materials via the
Internet or school intranet - this can significantly enhance and extend
existing school-based studies and make distance learning and home study
programs much more effective.
Availability & System Requirements
The Standard Edition is priced from US$79 and the Professional Edition from
US$149, whilst the Classroom Edition starts at US$179 for a 5-machine
licence (10, 20, 40 and 80-machine license packs are also available).
Internet upgrades are free via download. Order direct from Lava Software
(school purchase orders accepted) or via resellers Netsales, eMacSoftware or
Digital River.

Subject: WWW: O'Reilly and Open Source

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
O'Reilly & Associates is just starting an open, online discussion on
open documents, as I mentioned on this list a few days ago. If you
like the idea of the forum (see my "seed" posting below) go to:
http://forums.oreilly.com/~publishing
and just start clicking; the procedure should be pretty easy to figure
out.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
The groundswell of Open Source, or free software, technologies has
created a sea change in commercial book publishing. Several
publishers, including O'Reilly & Associates, have started offering
books under various open-content licenses so that they can be freely
displayed on Internet sites, distributed with software on CD-ROMs,
taken apart to be used for course handouts, and in some cases
printed by other people besides the original publisher. As
revolutionary for the publishing industry as this distribution
mechanism is, some projects go even further to work directly with
the developers of Open Source projects. We are likely to see the
integration of professionally edited and produced documentation into
the model of Open Source development over the next few years.
Having recently finished one project myself under an open-content
license -- Using Samba -- and having started work on several other
such projects, I'd like to invite all interested persons to a
discussion on how the Open Source community and professional
publishers can
1. Involve developers of open source software more directly in the
development of high-quality guides and other
professionally-edited content.
2. Find the development models for open documents that work well
with the successful models used for open-source software.
There are many angles to consider -- quality control, Internet-time
release schedules, the big-picture thinking required to keep the
book's balance and structure strong during updates, risks and
benefits of forking, adequate compensation for writers and
publishers, dealing with the natural tendency to want to hide work
in progress with competitive publishers -- so take your pick and
give us a thoughtful post!
