Subject: NetKit 0.16 is released

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The following items have been uploaded to ftp.uk.linux.org (in
/pub/linux/Networking/netkit) and metalab.unc.edu (in /pub/Linux/Incoming):

                netkit-combo-0.16.tar.gz

                biff+comsat-0.16.tar.gz
                bsd-finger-0.16.tar.gz
                linux-ftpd-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-base-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-bootparamd-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-ftp-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-ntalk-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-routed-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-rpc-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-rsh-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-rusers-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-rwall-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-rwho-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-telnet-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-tftp-0.16.tar.gz
                netkit-timed-0.16.tar.gz
                netwrite-0.16.tar.gz

These releases supersede the assorted 0.10, 0.11, 0.12, and 0.14 versions,
as well as the development snapshots labeled 0.15, as well as NetKit-0.09
and earlier.

netkit-combo-0.16 contains all of the others in a single easier-to-download
tarball. You do not need both it and the individual other packages.

This release fixes the following major problems, as well as other
minor ones:

        - The old ftp mget and routed trace file security bugs, as
well as the Y2K problem in the ftp client's "newer" command,
are now fixed in the official netkit sources.
        - Several assorted denial of service problems are now fixed.
        - A security problem with passive mode handling in ftp has been
          corrected.
        - Assorted suspicious string handling has been cleaned up, though
          nothing obviously exploitable was found.
        - Now works with gcc 2.95.x.

This release also adds the following features:

        - Now supports /dev/pts/*.
        - Virtual hosting support for inetd.
        - The talk client now supports a scrollable review buffer.

This release, however, also has the following problems:

        - PAM support is likely broken.

        - In general, it is not really as stable as I'd like. Consider
it more or less beta quality. If problems crop up, another
release will appear quickly. It has got to the point of being
more important to get a release out than to have it be perfect.

Note that netkit-ftp has fallen behind the technology curve. It may in
fact disappear completely. A better ftp client, ported from NetBSD's,
can be found in the package "lukemftp".

This is a source-only release. Requires libc 5.2 or higher, or glibc
2.0.6 or higher. Should work with any kernel released within the last
four years. gcc 2.7.2 or higher is required. Also requires
ncurses. GNU readline is optional.

Please send questions and comments to netbug@ftp.uk.linux.org.

Note: please see http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~dholland/computers/netkit.html
if you are curious why it's been so long since the last NetKit release.
(The short version is that I gave things to some other people, who let
them kind of slide.)

I do not currently plan to continue maintaining NetKit; I am doing this
release and perhaps one or two more, and then I intend to give the source
tree to Red Hat or some similar organization for long-term maintenance.
