=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The iTherm is a bit of cheap hardware and free Linux-based software which is a
nice demonstration of a low-speed web-based data-logging system. It has been
designed and built by the University of Wollongong IEEE Student Branch and is
located here:

http://ieee.uow.edu.au/iTherm

All schematics and source code (not that there is very much) is placed under
the GNU Public License and is available from the Web page.

Yes it's pointless, but it is _definitely_ fun (look at the graphs, try and
work out when we opened the lab, when people have heaters on etc :)

This is not an announcement, but a call for Linux users in Bruce
County (Ontario, Canada) to contact us so we can gauge the amount of
interest and the geographical distribution of potential members.

Because of our beautiful expanse of unpopulated wilderness and
countrysides, we are looking to start with a virtual (IRC/Mailinglist)
based LUG to share information, to promote Linux in our area, and to
offer support to new Linux fans. As time goes on, we will have some
physical meetings, but given our geography (and our weather) these
will probably not be monthly but just occasional install-fests and
other special events.

Anyone interested in participating should contact the Bruce County
Linux Users Group at bclug@teledyn.com

Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 20:38:16 GMT
Reply-To: ian@caliban.org

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Announcing a bug fix release of signature, 0.02.

signature is a free, open-source producer of dynamic signatures for
livening up your e-mail and news postings. It will allow you to sign
your messages with a different sig every time.

The idea for the program came from an old Perl script in the Camel
Book that demonstrated the use of named pipes.

This version corrects the problem of a zombie process being created
every time a signature is created, plus a minor display error in the
usage message.

The software can be obtained from:

    http://www.caliban.org/files/signature/signature-0.02.tar.gz

RPM format packages can be obtained from:

    http://www.caliban.org/files/signature/signature-0.02.i386.rpm
    http://www.caliban.org/files/signature/signature-0.02.src.rpm

The source code is available under the GPL 2.0 licence.

Subject: Mad Bomber 0.1 - Atari 2600 "Kaboom!"-game clone
Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 20:49:08 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Mad Bomber is a clone of Activision's 1981 Atari 2600 classic, "Kaboom!"
The Mad Bomber rushes back and forth at the top of the screen and drops bombs
which you must catch with your bucket. If one drops, you lose a bucket and go
back one level. One or two players can play, using keyboard or mouse. There
is also a "versus" mode where player two controls the Mad Bomber.

CHANGES since 0.0:

  * Something special happens at 10,000 points now.

  * Fixed some major CPU eating in the title and option screens.
    (Thanks to Gabe Rosa <mr_gabe@student.djusd.k12.ca.us>)

  * High score no longer counts in Two Player Vs. mode.

  * Tweaked the bomb-drop rate to be more like the original Kaboom!

  * The "Makefile" has been changed so that you can now cross-compile
    Madbomber for Win32 systems. Joe Zbiciak's <im14u2c@primenet.com>
"jzIntv" Intellivision Emulator for Linux helped shed some light
on how to mangle the Makefile and source to cross-compile for Windows.

From: Neil Koozer <nkoozer@rosenet.net>
Subject: non-bios boot loader: nuni
Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 20:43:34 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The nuni boot loader is posted at:
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/loaders/

Purpose:
The purpose of nuni is to avoid bios-related problems in booting linux
by not using the bios. Use of the bios for boot loaders has been a
constant thorn because it detracts from the image of linux when many new
users get the "LI" or "L 01 01...." problem with lilo.

ChangeLog:
1999-08-06 nuni-0.01 released
/ChangeLog

Although the release number is still 0.01, there have been no bug
reports or suggested modifications.

Characteristics:
(1) CMOS setings are irrelevant. Changing them all over the place does
not affect the loader.
(2) All IDE drives that have i/o ports, i.e. hda thru hdh can be booted
equally well.
(3) No cylindar limit. It can boot linux from anyplace up to 128gb.
(4) It doesn't have a second stage loader. All loading is handled by
the code in the boot sector. A utility is used to insert the inode
number and some other parameters into the boot loader.
(5) Since it does not use the bios, the diagnostics are in the form of
a colored progress bar. One color character is poked into the video
memory for each block that is loaded. It uses different colors for the
inode block, pointer blocks, setup code blocks, and kernel blocks. If
it should freeze you can see exactly how many of which types of blocks
have been loaded. Prints a red 'E' for error.
(6) It doesn't pass command lines to the kernel. It is equivalent to
the floppy boot loader in this respect.
(7) Loads zImage and bzImage type kernels. Tested on linux 2.0 and 2.2
(8) It uses GPL licence.
(9) nuni can be placed in the MBR for booting one system, or it can be
placed in many different partitions if there is some kind of selector or
boot manager in the MBR.

Usage example (mbr only):
/sbin/nuni /vmlinuz /dev/hda

Usage example (multi-booting):
/sbin/nuni /vmlinuz.1 /dev/hdb2
/sbin/nuni /vmlinuz.2 /dev/hdd7

Usage example (nuni on floppy to boot linux from hd):
/sbin/nuni /vmlinuz

Instead of using a .conf file, you would put these commands into a
script to guard against typos and to remember what you did. The
multi-booting example would depend on a selector in the MBR. (next
version to include a non-bios selector)

The loader portion is assembled with the NASM assembler. The package
includes a binary of this portion.

Abstract:

New technologies often form disruptive waves in technology markets. The
talk starts with some excerpts from "The Innovator's Dilemma", examines
the last few years of turmoil in the computer business, applies the
general model to Linux, and ends with SGI's applications of these ideas.
SGI believes that Linux is the next major disruptive wave in computing,
and is in the process of committing several product lines to Linux, and
- - Silicon Graphics to making available many features from the IRIX
operating system.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Mashey joined Bell Laboratories in 1973, starting in the
Programmer's Workbench department the week its first PDP-11/45 arrived.
He worked on various UNIX-related projects, including the Programmer's
Workbench (PWB/UNIX), shell command languages (including the first one
heavily used for shell programming), text processing (MM macros), the
merger of UNIX versions that resulted in UNIX/TS 1.0 (numeric ancestor
of System III, System V), software development environments. He also
managed development of operations support systems (UNIX and IBM MVS,
data mining & analysis) deployed in the Bell System for local loop
maintenance. This led to creating a combined group of software engineers
and cognitive psychologists to tackle problems in human interface and
information organization and dissemination. Much of his work involved
evangelizing the use of UNIX and helping it become more widely useful to
broader audiences, split about equally between commercial and technical
computing.

In 1983, he moved to Convergent Technologies, ending as Director of
Software Engineering for the Data Systems Division. In 1985, he joined
MIPS Computer Systems, where he helped design the MIPS R2000 RISC
architecture, and managed operating systems, networking, and software
QA. At MIPS (and now SGI), he was (and is) a company-wide
trouble-shooter and evangelist, working with engineering, marketing, and
sales, and customers, especially in areas that cross divisions and
disciplines.

He was one of the founding members of the SPEC benchmarking group. He
remains active in technical conferences, either as Program Chair (USENIX
Summer 1990, Hot Chips 1992), on program committees (Hot Chips, USENIX),
as General Chair (Hot Chips 1994) at conferences and user groups around
the world. He was Guest Editor for IEEE Micro June 1993. People who read
USENET comp.arch usually know him.

He was an ACM National Lecturer for 4 years while at Bell Labs, and has
given more than 500 public talks on software engineering, UNIX, RISC
design, benchmarking, and supercomputing. People especially seem to
remember the talks called "Small is Beautiful" and "Software Army on the
March", as well as "More MIPS, Cheaper MIPS, Never Too Many" (the "Car"
talk), "Hardware, Wetware, Software", and "Big Data and the Next Wave of
InfraStress".

Dr. Mashey has a B.S. Mathematics, and M.S. and PhD Computer Science
from Pennsylvania State University.
