Subject: Ganymede 0.99.7 - network directory services management (eg. NIS, DNS)
Date: Sat, 16 Oct 1999 11:04:52 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Ganymede 0.99.7 is available at

 ftp://ftp.arlut.utexas.edu/pub/ganymede/

 or

 ftp://129.116.212.1/pub/ganymede/

if your client has trouble resolving a proper address for
ftp.arlut.utexas.edu.

Ganymede is a GPL'ed system for managing NIS, DNS, and other
network directory services in medium-to-large environments.

The Ganymede web page is at http://www.arlut.utexas.edu/gash2/.

- --

It's been almost 6 weeks since the last Ganymede release, and lots of
things have been fixed and improved. We went into production with
Ganymede this past week, and lots of the new features and fixes came
about as part of that.

Highlights include a fix for the old 'can't bind to localhost' problem
that people had been reporting when running the Ganymede server on
Linux. Thanks to Michael McEniry (mmceniry@itsc.uah.edu) for
providing a very nice patch to the Ganymede server to take care of
this problem.

I had to take care of a whole cluster of problems from 0.99.6 that
made it basically impossible to properly take a newly dumped schema
file and load data into it using any of the included schema kits. I
also fixed a bug introduced in 0.99.6 that broke the database rollback
code.

The new features include some extra sanity checking in the server's
start-up code, a reworking of the builder task classes to not leak
file descriptors, an idle user time-out server thread, the ability for
the client to reconnect to the Ganymede server if the server is
restarted while the client is loaded, and a deferred shutdown option
for the server, to cleanly shut down the system without having users
lose changes they are working on.

Subject: YAMD 0.32: Yet Another Malloc Debugger
Date: Sat, 16 Oct 1999 11:09:24 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

YAMD is a tool for catching dynamic memory related bugs
(malloc/free/new/delete).

It can be downloaded from its home page:

http://www3.hmc.edu/~neldredge/yamd/

Main features:
* Paging mechanisms are used to prevent invalid accesses (like
ElectricFence). Out-of-bounds writes and reads are caught, and caught
immediately.

* All operations are logged with a traceback to aid in determining why
some allocation or other went awry.

* Supports dynamic loading, so you don't need to recompile or relink
your binary to debug it.

* No changes to your source are needed.

* All the "usual" malloc debugger features (checks for multiple freeing,
etc)

Copying policy is GPL.

Caveats:
- - Currently works only on x86/Linux.
- - glibc 2.1 is required for some of the features.

Please send suggestions, bugs, success reports, etc. to me, Nate
Eldredge, at <neldredge@hmc.edu>. Thanks.

Subject: V1.4 of x10_lib, an home automation library
Date: Sat, 16 Oct 1999 11:06:57 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi all !

I've released V1.4 of x10_lib, a library for Linux for controlling a
CM11A home automation interface.

This is only a bug fix release (see below). You can find it here:
<ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/appliance/x10_lib-1.4.tgz>
or mirrors.

Changes versus 1.3 are included below:

V1.4: - major bug fix: we now update the x10_status->objects member
when sending on/off/dim/bright to a module via x10_send_cmd().
                - added parameters check in x10_send_cmd().
                - suppressed the "wait forever until module answers" after sending
an X10_CMD_STATUS_REQUEST to a module. We now wait only
one jiffy to avoid hanging if the module is not smart enough to
                answer.

 Herve Regad-Pellagru
(E-mail address: replace what is before '@' by 'regad' in the FROM line)

fireworks mode: n. The mode a machine is sometimes said to be in when
it is performing a crash_and_burn operation.

Subject: eInteractive 0.3 - Eiffel library for interactive applications
Date: Sat, 16 Oct 1999 11:06:06 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Hi,

Welcome to eInteractive! eInteractive is a library of software components that
address the specific needs of interactive applications. Some of the planned
components will be usable for console applications as well as for system with a
graphical use interface while others will provide mechanisms that are
especially useful for console applications. eInteractive is written in Eiffel.

The library was tested with ISE Eiffel 4.4 under Linux and Windows. It
also should work with any other Eiffel compilers.

Currently implemented features:

* Single- and Multi-level undo/redo mechanism that can handle single commands
as well as command groups consisting of several commands.

* An interface to basic data container components that are independent of the
underlying data structure library. Currently, the libraries EiffelBase
  and GOBO are supported.

Features that are planned for future releases of eInteractive:</b></h4>

* UNIX shell-like command history

* Line-editing features

* UNIX shell-like file-name completion

* Copy-and-paste and clipboard features

The eInteractive web site is located at:

        http://einteractive.dhs.org/

There you will also find the online documentation for this library.

In the next days, eInteractive will also be uploaded to the Eiffel Forum
Archive (http://www.eiffel-forum.org).

Hope you find eInteactive useful.

Best regards,
Patrick Schönbach

Subject: mc - Spreadsheet for Linux - released v6.2a Y2K
Date: Sat, 16 Oct 1999 11:17:45 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

- -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi,

after having decided to license my product "mc" on Linux for free
since October 1996, I had some really good input from the Linux
community. This ended now in the release 6.2a which was released
at 15th Oct 1999.

MacroCALC, or "321" like a couple of users preferred as an alias
name for the program, when "mc" is use by other commands, was
enhanced and debugged in several areas and made Y2K compliant.

For Linux-user most important - there is a glibc-based version
available. Here is the product-README file. Everybody should
feel free to contact the places mentioned herein. A copy of the
software is ready for download in the WWW homepage.

Axel Reinhold

- - -----------

Abstract
mc - MacroCALC is a powerful Lotus compatible character
based spreadsheet that supports 1000 rows, 64 columns, 40
functions, 8 display formats, file linking, macro program-
ming and user definable functions. MacroCALC is fully
integrated with [nt]roff, units, man, awk, perl and sh.
As it should be in the UNIX-environment, mc can act as a
filter enabling users to use pipes to perform complex
transforms on streams of data. It contains a C program-
ming interface as well as Lotus WKS and dBASE file sup-
port. mc's own file-format is flat ASCII, easy to under-
stand and can therefore be directly manipulated with awk,
perl or other standard UNIX-tools, or even with editors
like vi. MacroCALC is the only spreadsheet that manages
       units: 1 mile + 1 km = 1.62 miles; 1 km / 1 hour * 30 sec
       = 8.33 m.

mc is a professional product, sold a couple hundred times
for UnixWare, SCO, Coherent and Interactive. It's rcs-
controlled, lint-clean ANSI-C source is based on yacc, lex
and [n]curses. It runs on every terminal or emulation
that has a correct terminfo-entry. The user-interface is
very convenient and well-known by 1-2-3 users. Function-
and cursor-keys and extended video attributes are sup-
ported. The menus and messages are in separate editable
files and can be easily translated into any language
(english, french and german are included.
Every command in the package has a detailed man-page. The
product is supported by the developers own Internet home-
       page and eMail address.

You should carefully read this software license agreement
       before continuing with installation.

the system works only as a demonstration program. For

8th Issue of the "Brave GNU World", the
monthly GNU forum, is online now
                                -- Georg Greve

Hi !

The 8th issue of the "Brave GNU World" column is online
now. It can be found on the GNU Webpage and its mirrors
or follow the links at the end of this posting.

The "Brave GNU World" is a multilingual (English, German, French,
Japanese and Spanish) monthly column that provides information about
internal developments of the GNU Project and things of importance to
the GNU community, while trying to give insights into the underlying
philosophy. It is available online (see links below) or printed in
Germany´s biggest GNU/Linux magazine, the "Linux Magazin".

If you would like to receive mail about new issues directly, you can
subscribe to the "Brave GNU World" announcement mailinglist. Just
send mail to <brave-gnu-world-request@gnu.org> with "subscribe" in
the *body*. The mailinglist is only for announcements that are related
to the "Brave GNU World" and is of very low volume (between 1 and 4
mails a month).

The seventh issue covers the following topics:

 * Why write Free Software? ( what the authors think )
 * Informational Human Rights ( an alternative idea why we
                                need Free Software )
 * GNU Nana ( increasing the quality and
                                reliability of C/C++ code )

This column intends to provide a forum for all GNU maintainers,
friends and associates and I am always open to suggestions. So if
you

 * have questions about the GNU Project that might be of general
   interest

 * have a GNU Project and would like to improve its profile

 * would like to start a GNU Project you are looking for people to
   start it with

 * think something doesn't get the publicity it deserves

 * would like to see something made public

send mail to:

        "Brave GNU World <column@gnu.org>"

This column is for everyone with an interest in Free Software,
so don´t hesitate to contact me if your project is under the
GPL/LGPL and you´d like to see it introduced here.

Subject: Tsinvest version 0.8 - quantitative financial analysis of equities

The program tsinvest is for the real time programmed day trading of
equities. New in version 0.8 is a dump command that dumps the internal
data structures of the program for regression testing. The complete
regression test suite takes about 2 weeks on a Pentium class machine,
and includes a simulation of the market run up between 1922 and 1929,
followed by the "crash" from 1929 to 1932 as a demonstration of the
program's capabilities.

The program has a web site at http://www2.inow.com/~conover/ntropix/

    From the lsm:

    Begin3
    Title: tsinvest-0.8.tar.gz
    Version: 0.8
    Entered-date: October 14, 1999
Description: Quantitative financial analysis of equities.
The optimal gains of multiple equity
investments are computed. The program decides
which of all available equities to invest in
at any single time, by calculating the
                            instantaneous Shannon probability of all
                            equities, and using statistical estimation
techniques to estimate the accuracy of the
                            calculated Shannon probability. Entropic
techniques are used throughout. A tutorial is
presented in the man(1) pages. A companion
equity market simulation program is included.
