ANNOUNCEMENT
============
I am pleased to announce the availability of the Aviation HOWTO for
Linux Users. Are you a private, commercial, or military pilot? Do you
use a personal computer to help facilitate some aspect of your flying?
Does the idea of using a Microsoft operating system or application for
such purposes generate more sheer terror than that dream you had about
trying to recover from an inverted spin, with a CG that was too far
aft? If you answered yes to these questions, then read on.
The Aviation HOWTO is an FAQ, HOWTO "like" document that provides
pointers to software packages that run under the Linux operating system
and are useful to private, commercial, or military pilots. The ultimate
goal is to enable pilots to use the Linux operating system for all
their aviation related computing needs. You can browse it online,
or download a formatted copy from;
http://metalab.unc.edu/fplan/Aviation-HOWTO/
Best Regards, John

Subject: jed v0.99-9 available
Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 21:46:15 GMT
Reply-To: davis@space.mit.edu
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Version B0.99-9 of the jed programmer's editor is now available. Jed
provides emulations for the following editors: Emacs, VAX/VMS EDT,
Wordstar, Brief, and Borland's IDE. An image of the editor running in
an xterm that illustrates its color syntax highlighting, folding, and
drop-down menu abilities is available from
http://space.mit.edu/%7Edavis/images/jed1.gif. Additional information
about jed may be obtained from http://www.s-lang.org and
http://space.mit.edu/%7Edavis/jed.html.
The complete distribution (source code and executables) may be
obtained from
ftp://space.mit.edu/pub/davis/jed/v0.99
and should appear within a day at the following mirrors:
ftp://ftp.uni-stuttgart.de:/pub/unix/misc/slang
ftp://ftp.prz.tu-berlin.de/pub/unix/editors/jed
ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/lang/slang/
Precompiled Redhat binaries in rpm format for Linux are available from
http://cpbotha.net/jedstuff/.
The distribution comes in two forms:
1. A compressed .tar file that contains the complete source
distribution for Unix, VMS, OS/2, MSDOS, and win32.
2. A zip file that for MSDOS, windows 9X, and NT systems. This file
contains pre-compiled executables and everything needed to run it
on these systems. However, since it does not contain any source
code, you will need to get the tar file if you intend to compile
it yourself.
Although version B0.99 is considered to be a beta version, it appears
to be very stable with no significant problems reported in the B0.99
series. The only reason it is beta code is that I do not feel that it
has been tested enough on non-Unix systems; however, under Unix it has
been extensively tested (for nearly 2 years) and is solid (evidence
is this is that most of the changes affected the win32 port).
***You will need slang 1.3.7 or greater to compile this version.
The latest version of slang is 1.3.9. The slang source code is
also available in the ftp directories.
Changes since B0.99-8 (The complete list of changes is available
from the ftp site in changes.txt):
1. win32: define_color intrinsic was not working properly because
of an old-style definition.
2. win32: g32shell.exe performs globbing on command line
arguments but w32shell.exe does not. To use the globbing
shell, put `W32shell_Perform_Globbing=1;' in your jed.rc file.
3. win32.c: bug in sys_findnext corrected.
4. problem with enable_menu_keys on win32 fixed.
5. doc/script.txt updated.
6. QNX specific patches from SvOlli <smoll@qnx.de>.
7. Xjed: fgKeyword2 and bgKeyword2 resource settings added.
8. idl.sl: ide_window_down typo corrected (Matthew Gabeler-Lee
<msg2@po.cwru.edu>).
9. win32 Borland specific patches from John Skilleter
<john@skilleter.freeserve.co.uk>.
10. Updated ide.sl mode from Guido Gonzato
<guido@ibogeo.df.unibo.it>.
11. install targets rewritten to work around limitations of the
autoconf install script.
12. Improved detection of fold marks.
13. win32 patch involving read-only files from John Skilleter
<john.Skilleter@pace.co.uk>.
14. update_sans_update_hook intrinsic added.
15. win32: bug involve handling of ALTGR fixed. In addition, several
other changes were made to the win32 keyboard code to allow ^G to
interrupt a slang procedure, e.g., while(1);
16. If an interactive seach finds a match on a hidden line, e.g.,
one in a fold, then the line will be made momentarily visible.
