From: "Jens Chr. Bachem" <bachem@guug.de>
Subject: CONFERENCE: Linux-Kongress 2000: Call for Location
Date: Wed, 8 Sep 1999 19:02:52 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Linux-Kongress 1999 has not yet begun (hurry up, it starts on
Wednesday, September 8th, in Augsburg!), but with these words we start
looking for next year's location (as we promised in Würzburg 1997, we
will look for a new location in Middle-Europe every year)!

So, would YOU like to organize the Y2K-(without-problems;-)-Linux-Kongress
in YOUR town?

You will now certainly ask: What do I have to do then?

Well, to be honest in the first place: A LOT OF WORK, but, trust me as
the local organizer in Cologne 1998, it is absolutely WORTH doing so!

To be more specific:
* The first and most important thing to do is to find an appropriate
location. Appropriate here means:
** has at least three lecture rooms, the largest with >= 500 places,
the middle with >= 300 places, the smallest with >= 100 places, plus
   some smaller rooms
** has some space for making a (small) exhibition
** is not too expensive. Ideally, it will be free (universities often
offer such oppurtunities), but a good location might be worth
   paying for it.
(If you have vistited former Linux-Kongresses, you will certainly have
an idea about what we need.)

* Furthermore, you need to look for a hotel where the speakers can
stay, a nice location for both the speakers's dinner and the social
event, a frame program for the speakers on the weekend after the
Kongress, and it would also be fine if you find some cheap locations
where the visitors can stay.

* You need to provide all "local important" information for our
web-pages: The way to the Kongress (via car, train, tram, ...),
references to the hotels, where the visitors can take their lunch, ...

* During the Kongress week, we need 10-15 volunteers to help in
organizing the whole thing: Mark the way to the Kongress, help at
the registration desk, transport of speakers, packing conference
bags, moderation of tracks, help setting up the exhibition, guard
the Internet-Cafe, solve unexpected problems, ...

PLEASE DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THIS POINT: It has shown in past that even
large Linux user groups had to work hard to get this amount of
people, some are at work, some are in holidays, some are not that much
interested as you might have expected!

On the other hand, you DO

* NOT need to care for the program (though we are happy if you or
someone of your organization team would like to participate in the
program chair)

* NOT need to care for the registration (this is handled by the GUUG)

* NOT need to care for public relations (though help, especially for
local newspapers etc, would be greatly appreciated)

* NOT care for the webspace (except providing the "local" information)

* NOT necessarily need to look for sponsors and exhibitors (though your
help would be greatly appreciated)

So, if you think that YOU can and would like to manage these tasks,
you will certainly ask: When will the event take place?

Well, this is not strictly determined, but
* we don't see any need to change the traditional scheme of the last
years: Start with the tutorials on wednesday, have the conference
  on thursday and friday.
* we need to avoid overlapping with other events, both local,
Linux and non-Linux (e.g., you will not get affordable room for the
speakers and visitors in Munich during "Oktoberfest"), and international
* it shouldn't be during Germany's summer holidays
* there should be some time-gap after this year's Kongress

As a suggestion, the end of the third quarter 2000 (a little later than
this year) will be a good candidate.

The exact date will of course have to be discussed with the location
you proposed.

This is only a rough overview, to discuss the details we will have a
BOF on this year's Linux Kongress on Friday, September 10th, from
13:45-14:30, please ask at the registration desk for the location.

If you can't join this BOF, or if you have further questions, please
e-mail to cfl@linux-kongress.de.

If you can imagine to organize the Kongress next year, please also
mail to cfl@linux-kongress.de till October 31st 1999.

You don't have to have an perfect idea of how to handle all of the
things mentioned above till then, but you should have some
suggestions, especially about the location!

Thanks a lot,

Martin Schulte
Jens Chr. Bachem
Sebastian Hetze
Jos Vos

(for next year's program committee)

wvDecryptTest is a password verifyer for word97 documents. It can
validate that a given password is correct for a given word97
document.

It can also partly (512 bytes!) decrypt word97 documents, it is
a subpart of the wv (http://www.csn.ul.ie/~caolan/docs/MSWordView.html)
project to provide a library capable of parsing and converting all
word document formats. wv is used by abiword amoung others.

This release is to attempt to attract some expertise to complete the
decryption process, as I've come to the end of my own ability.

wvDecryptTest is available from

Hello,
I just put together some RPMs for:

- - ldap-client-cgi: Python LDAP-client running as a CGI-BIN

- - ldapmodule: LDAP Module for Python

- - openldap: Lightweight Directory Access Protocol

as I thought, it's enough if one person struggles with installation and
compilation ;-). All packages were compiled on RedHat 6.0 with Kernel
2.2.12, Python-Version 1.52 (got these one from the lorax-beta).

You will find RPMs, SRPMs and SPECs at:

http://www.webideal.de/ldap/

Any comments in regards to packaging are welcome. The copyrights for the
single packages are in the SPECs.

Best regards

Subject: PB and PG v.1.2 - programs for communicating with Microsat satellites
Date: Wed, 8 Sep 1999 19:09:25 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

I have uploaded version 1.2 of PB and PG for Linux to Sunsite.unc.edu.
The file
name is pbpg-1.2.tar.gz. I have placed the file and the accompanying
lsm-file in /pub/Incoming/linux. The target directory is
/pub/linux/apps/ham.
The updated documentation is found in pb-pg.txt.

The following errors have been corrected:
- - The package will compile with glibc 2
- - The display of file names in the files window of PB is now correct
- - The status line of PB has been cleaned up
- - The e-counter was incorrectly incremented when TLM frames was received

- - PG will now upload more than one file per invocation
- - Reception of a ER_NO_SUCH_FILE_NUMBER is handled correctly by PG

The following improvements have been made:
- - The downlink efficiency is now computed for all satellites
- - A download request is cancelled when (if) a NO -3 message is received
- - A new parameter MAXWAIT has been inrtroduced for PG. It allows PG
to wait a certain time before attempting to connect to the satellite.

The following is believed to be an incorrectness:
- - Sometimes PB will send requests for directory fills when it is not
needed. This behaviour has only been observed with AO-16.

The lsm reads as follows:

The game without a name (tgwan), whose code name is lcross, is a free,
open source logical game copyrighted under the GPL. It is entirely
written in Tcl/Tk.

The object of the game is kind of hard to describe.
You have to find the location of black caskets on a 15x15 caskets pitch.
For each row and each column the length and the number of black lines,
which are formed by connected black caskets, is shown. By combining
these hints you can solve the game.

You can download tgwan (~58 kB) in the following file formats:
- -.tgz
- -.rpm
- -.deb
from http://homes.arealcity.com/lcross.

Thank you for your attention.

LINUX C MAILING LISTS
Home Site Established
_____________________

Having announced the Linux C Mailing Lists, there are now over 200
people participating in various discusion about Linux and C. There have
been some very vibrant discussions about the lists' purposes, the types
of C questions answered and the motives of people who've joined the
list. Importantly, Chuck Mead and David Lloyd, the two list operators,
maintain that the list is both for experienced and inexperienced C
programmers. Chuck and David are working on a way to make the lists
relevant to the new C programmer and also relevant to an experienced
programmer.

David has created a new logo and a newly rebuilt home site for the
mailing lists. More than 500 people saw the older, rather banal
page...David says "I'm certain that people will find the new site easy
to navigate, useful and in time a repository of knowledge". We now have
established a new logo - LINUX C PROGRAMMING c programming lists written
in a circular fashion with Tux the Penguin sitting in the middle.

Should you wish to view our newly revised home page, it is at:

http://users.senet.com.au/~lloy0076/linux_c_programming/index.html

To subscribe to one of the lists straight away simply send this email
with no subject or body:

mailto:linuxCprogramming-subscribe@listbot.com

Chuck Mead and David Lloyd are both excited and pleased at the
phenomenal growth in the two lists' membership. We still believe that
these lists will provide an excellent open source resource for all
aspiring and current programmers who use c to program linux. Please, do
come and join us!

DAVID LLOYD
(ListBot Linux C Programming List CoOrdinator).

Subject: Compaq announces public Beta test for Linux Alpha C compiler
Date: Wed, 8 Sep 1999 19:17:46 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

In case you have not already seen one of the many unofficial
announcements, the Compaq C compiler for Linux Alpha systems
is now available (along with Fortran) for public Beta test.

Please see

  http://www.unix.digital.com/linux/software.htm

for details and immediate download of the software, subject
to accepting an online beta test license agreement.

Briefly, the compiler provides the same state-of-the-art optimization
technology for the Alpha processor as offered by the very latest
Compaq compilers on Compaq's proprietary Alpha platforms, and offers
some amount of gcc compatibility in both language features and command
line processing.

The software is only available in rpm format, and has primarily been
tested under the Red Hat 5.2 distribution. Limited testing under Red
Hat 6.0, and no testing yet under other distributions. The limited
testing only reflects what we've done so far, and not at all an
intended limitation.

Subject: GTK+XFce 3.0.2 - easy-to-use GTK+-based environment for X11
Date: Wed, 8 Sep 1999 18:25:16 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

XFce 3.1.0 is now available for download on http://www.xfce.org

XFce is an easy-to-use and easy-to-configure environment for X11, based on GTK+,
with pulldown menus and color icons, 3D widgets, etc. XFce features now a set of
applications including a powerful Window Manager xfwm, a toolbar/application
launcher, a backdrop manager, a system sound manager for X11, a user friendly
interface for mouse configuration, a pager providing a miniature view of all
XFce desktops, a clock/calendar and at last but not least a filemanager, all
sharing the same look'n feel.

Here is the changes summary in version 3.1.0 :

- - xfwm
  * Add window snapping (based on a patch submitted by Khadiyd Idris
    <khadx@francemel.com>)
  * Add window shading (based on a patch submitted by Khadiyd Idris
    <khadx@francemel.com>)
  * Improve program structure/Makefiles to compile on Solaris 2.5.1, 2.6, 2.7,
IRIX 6.2 and 6.5 (patch submitted by Albert Chin-A-Young
    <china@thewrittenword.com>)
  * Add window contents visible during resize
  * General improvements/changes/bugs fixes
- - xfsound
  * Update XFSound to allow sound for shade/unshade (patch submitted by Khadiyd
    Idris <khadx@francemel.com>)
- - xfce
  * Add user-configurable delay before displaying tooltips
  * Improve configuration options/dialog
  * Add options in configuration dialog to start modules according to user
    preferences.
- - xfpager
  * Implement shade/unshade message handling.
- - all
  * New script to handle drag'n drop on the printer icon (xfprint)
  * New script to handle drag'n drop on the recycle icon (xftrash)
  * Change module startup procedure. Modules are now spawned by XFce (not XFwm)
