Subject: Revising the LILO mini-HOWTO
Date: Tue,  1 Jun 1999 20:16:37 GMT

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Back when dinosaurs walked the earth and I wrote LILO mini-HOWTO,
my three computers gave three interesting examples. But I got
too busy *using* Linux to study it or even stay current enough to
run sgmltools, and things got more complex. The HOWTO got stale.
Much stuff that belongs in a LILO HOWTO is scattered across other
HOWTOs, and there are unanswered LILO FAQs in the newsgroups.

The free software community has done so much for me I'd be a jerk
not to revise the old doc. But I need your help, because my five
Linux boxes ain't an adequate survey no more.

Is there a question about LILO you're tired of answering?
Do you have a kernel command line that was hard to figure out?
Have you managed to get past the 1023 cylinder limit and the
7.something GB LBA limit?
Do you have a cool multi-boot setup you're dying to share?
Are you the master of EZ-Drive and OnTrack Disk Manager?
Do you know what packages must be installed to build the Lilo
User Guide from its LaTeX sources, and where to get them?
Do you have a favorite mirror for fetching stuff like lilo-21.tar.gz?

Then you can help revise the old mini-HOWTO!

Visit http://judi.greens.org/lilo/ and post your questions,
or your answers, or your annotated lilo.conf, or your FAQ+answer,
or your FAQ sans answer, it's easy. Be a hero. Share your knowledge.
Once there's some stuff, I'll get a new mini-HOWTO out.
(Yes, Werner and Alessandro said okay.)

BONUS: the Lilo User Guide and Tech Supplement in PDF
are there.  Click on "well-documented."

From: kirk@kaybee.org
Subject: AutoRPM 1.8.1 - tool for automatically managing rpm packages
Date: Tue,  1 Jun 1999 21:11:13 GMT
Reply-To: kirk@kaybee.org

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

Announcing AutoRPM 1.8.1!

Now compatible with Red Hat Linux 6.0 (and still 5.X as well)!

*DESCRIPTION*
AutoRPM is a program that can do any combination of the following: mirror RPMs
from an FTP site, keep installed RPMs consistent with an FTP site or local
directory, and keep installed RPMs in a cluster or network of systems consis-
tent. It is highly flexible and even contains a menu-driven
Interactive-Install mode.

Version 1.8 -> 1.8.1
- - Added a little kludge so that the perl-libnet made for Red Hat 5.X
  will still work okay under Red Hat 6.0. AutoRPM will now look in
  the 5.X location and the 6.0 location for the FTP Perl module.
- - Modified the version comparison code (again). It turns out that
  older versions of AutoRPM thought that netscape-4.08 was newer than
  netscape-4.6. I have unconfirmed reports that older versions of
  RPM thought the same thing. However, I tested it under rpm-3.0.1
  and that version of rpm does think that 4.6 is newer than 4.08.
  Therefore, AutoRPM now thinks the same thing.
- - The much improved interactive mode is coming soon.. I promise!

Version 1.7.1 -> 1.8
- - Supports complete FTP file transfer resuming
- - Only pays attention to most recent local version of an RPM
- - *Really* eliminates duplicate queue entries
- - Displays size of remote RPM when transferring
- - Small bug fixed with RPM filename parsing
- - Some queue file format changes (no longer have NEW and Install flags)
- - Added code to support new interactive queue mode
- - Changed the FTP_Retry commands to allow for a random sleep time
- - Changed the way the Allow_Delete and Delete commands work. See autorpm.conf(5).

Get the non-achitecture-specific main program:
ftp://ftp.kaybee.org/pub/redhat/RPMS/noarch/autorpm-1.8.1-1.noarch.rpm

And the required Perl library:
ftp://ftp.kaybee.org/pub/redhat/RPMS/noarch/perl-libnet-1.0605-2.noarch.rpm

And make sure you have the 'dialog' program that came with Red Hat Linux 5.X.
Oh, and you also need 'perl' and 'mailx'.

- ------------------------------------------------------------------

Send all comments and questions to:

         Linux-Mandrake 5.3 -----------------> UKP 3.00 each.

The install CDROMs include an El Torito boot record, which, on supported
hardware make them bootable.

The Red Hat 6.0 CDs are made to order, and as such, will have all the Red
Hat updates to that time on the CD. Rather than having them in a separate
updates directory, we have opted to make them part of the install, so you
automatically have an up-to-date Linux system.

A large amount of extra software has been included on the CDROM, including
Corel WordPerfect (downloadable version) and Sun JDK 1.1.7 (for the
programmers out there). Also now included are xawtv and alevt (for bttv-based
TV cards), VNC and SSH 1.2.27.

A second CD is available, which contains all the source code. Red Hat
Linux is just too big now to have all the binaries and sources on the one
CD. This CD is also available, also for UKP 3.00.

The Debian CD set is the Official Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 (slink) 2CD
distribution.

The Mandrake CDs are based on the official ISOs. However, since the
official ISO doesn't appear to be bootable, we've remade it so it does
boot.

For more information, and how to order, please visit the web page at:

        http://www.amush.cx/linux/

International orders accepted, but due to the cost of bank charges and
international mail, the prices will be slightly higher.

Sorry, we cannot accept credit cards. Cash (Pounds sterling preferred!)
and cheques drawn on a UK bank. International bank transfers accepted,
however subject to a UKP 2.00 charge due to bank charges. There is a
UKP 1.50 charge for postage and packaging within the UK, variable for
international customers.

================
WHAT IS MAVERIK?
================

Maverik is a system for managing graphics and interaction in Virtual
Reality applications. It is designed to address the challenges of highly
interactive virtual environments containing many objects with complex
geometry. Maverik uses either Mesa or OpenGL to perform rendering and runs
on GNU/Linux PCs and Silicon Graphics workstations.

================
DOWNLOAD MAVERIK
================

The complete Maverik distribution is available as both RPMs and gzipped
tars from http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/systems/Maverik, and also from
ftp.gnu.org.

================================
EXAMPLES OF MAVERIK APPLICATIONS
================================

Visit the Maverik Applications Gallery
(http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/systems/Maverik/gallery.html) for examples of
a wide range of Maverik applications.

====================
WHY MAVERIK IS NOVEL
====================

Maverik dispenses with a separate representation for application data.
Conventional VR systems need to import data into their own format, but
Maverik avoids this by making use of the application's own internal data
structures. This has two important benefits:

1) Maverik can easily take advantage of optimisations that are highly
   application-specific, intimately tied to knowledge that the application
   has.

2) Maverik can far more readily adapt (dynamically) to a wide range of
   application demands. Its flexible design means that applications with
   widely differing requirements can be supported.

========================
THE MAVERIK ARCHITECTURE
========================

Maverik has two main parts:

1) The Maverik micro-kernel implements a set of core services, and a
   framework that applications can use to build complete virtual
   environments and virtual reality interfaces.

2) The Maverik supporting modules contain default methods for optimised
   display management including culling, spatial management, interaction
   and navigation, and control of VR input and output devices. Maverik's
   structure allows these default methods to be customised to operate
   directly on application data, so that optimal representations and
   algorithms can be employed.

============
RELATED WORK
============

Maverik provides a framework and toolkit for a single user to perceive,
interact with, and navigate around, a graphically complex Virtual
Environment. Although it can be used stand-alone for single-user VR
applications, it has been designed to integrate with a large-scale
distributed multi-user VR system called Deva, currently under development
(http://aig.cs.man.ac.uk/systems/Deva/). Deva supports multiple virtual
worlds and applications, together with sophisticated methods of specifying
behaviours and laws for objects within VEs. The Advanced Interfaces Group
plans to release the Deva system at a later date.

================
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
================

Funding for development of Maverik was provided by the UK's Engineering and
Physical Sciences Research Council (grant GR/K99701), with additional
support from our industrial partners, CADCentre Ltd, Brown & Root Ltd, and
Sharp Laboratories of Europe Ltd.
