I also did it and finally I have gtk+-1.1.2.
For RH users wich are going to use gnome: There seems to be a problem
with de glib-1.1.3 srpm, maybe is only in my machine but when I build
them, install them and then try to build gtk+-1.1.2 the configure script
can't compile the glib test program and crashes saying (in config.log)
that the variables glib_major_version, glib_minor_version and
glib_micro_version are not defined after include glib.h
