There's an amazing news story about George Fabyan that can be found at

I'd summarize it, but I don't think it compresses well semantically...
Let it suffice to say that Fabyan is the guy who founded the lab where
William Friedman learned cryptography. And the plaque on the wall that
thanks Fabyan was presented by the NSA.
