There is an open source project called gpkcs11 that uses OpenSSL for soft token
support under PKCS11. There are hooks to add in hard token and reader support
which has been done by a few individuals, but to my knowledge none of that work
has been released as open source. gpkcs11 is released under the GNU LGPL I
believe.
