The Treasury Department said Tuesday it was setting up a new Internet
gateway to
streamline the handling of payments to the federal government and spur the
digital economy.
The project, called Pay.gov, will let the government process online -- more
cheaply and efficiently -- any of the 80 million transactions it handles each
year, the department said.
`It'll cover everything from a family paying for a camping license for a
national park to a corporation paying fees or fines,'' Deputy Treasury
Secretary
Stuart Eizenstat told a press conference showcasing federal electronic commerce
initiatives.
He described Pay.gov, which is to be phased in starting in late October, as
``cutting edge'' technology designed to make the government more accessible,
modern and ``consumer friendly.''
