Always collecting examples of "secret signatures" 
that predate all the stuff we do, I offer this for

invented the purple ink stamp that identifies USDA-inspected
meat -- an ink that's used to this day.  USDA won't reveal
what's in Dorset's formula.  It is kept secret to avoid
replication of the stamp.
