If APO is not in the BSA community on the boys' level, it is up to each and
every individual chapter and brother to change this. We all know that many
people join APO because of their Scouting background (especially Eagle Scouts).
How many of our chapters help out at council or district-wide camporees,
klondike derbys, or first aid meets? And if you do help out, do you wear
your letters or a Scout uniform? Much can be said for wearing a uniform, but
if one of our purposes there is to publicize APO, then we should wear letters.
I also was staffing the APO booth at Jamboree and afterwards I posted to the
list that not only did we have over 300 brothers stop by and visit, but also
we had probably somewhere between 200-300 High School Juniors, Seniors, and
incoming College Freshman stop by and fill out cards indicating their interest
in APO. Even if our area councils don't need our help with activities, if we
have an informational booth at their events this would still accomplish a large
part of our purpose. Other ideas include going to Scoutmaster Roundtables
and having literature available at the local Scout Headquarters. We can
inform more Scouts about APO, but we need to publicize ourselves and not rely
on Scouting to do it for us.
