As you have probably heard or read about, the folks in Southern California
are not having a good day! I do want to assure you that not all of Southern
California is up in flames right now, just certain highly publicized
portions. It is true that about 70,000 acres have been torched so far, and
the acreage will go even higher before this is all over. If it's anything
like the Oakland Hills fires, then it will take 2-3 days before the fire
slows down enough for firefighters to get the upper hand.
For those who are asking "Gee, I wonder how we can help?"...
I spoke with the Rhonda Aven-Haggenmiller (the Section 1 Vice-Chair, who
lives in Redondo Beach just south of Los Angeles), and she tells me that the
greatest need right now is cash donations to the Red Cross and Salvation
Army. Many homeowners will be covered by insurance, but relief agencies need
resources right now to help set up emergency shelters and buy food for those
who are temporarily displaced. The floods in the midwest this year have
nearly wiped out the agencies that are trying to provide relief to the folks
in Southern California.
If you individually or collectively are interested in helping out, the best
thing you can do is to donate to your local Red Cross or Salvation Army and
to earmark the donation for Southern California relief.
