Many social fraternities do in fact stretch their pledge classes over
more than a single semester. However, I think rather than have only
one pledge class per year, they have 2 pledging ceremonies per year
(one per semester) and sometimes have 2 current pledge classes. Of
course I'm not incredibly familiar with other fraternities' pledging
program (it seems to be a matter of great secrecy with them, I wonder
why :-). Perhaps somebody who has experienced another pledge program
could elucidate us here?
