Hmm, reasons to censure what is posted:
1) This is NOT, repeat NOT a private mailing list. Some of the
addresses on this list are actually bboards at big schools.
2) People tend to get pissed off when you criticize them in public.
This leads to flame wars which make all of us look really bad.
3) When you're trying to get a piece of legislation through at the
board level or other levels, you don't want some random person to
unknowingly screw things up for you. Imagine if our president were
engaged in sensitive negotiations with the BSA, and someone posted a
message degrading the BSA right at that moment. How do you think Gerry
would feel?
Anyway, those are the reasons I know. Anyone got any others?
Those are general thoughts. I don't know of specific instances when
people were asked to refrain from posting. If there was a certain
instance that seemed unjust, my response would be different.
