I tend to lose mine before they go bad. And I don't lose them very
often. But we do have a large number of pins in the office (10 or so)
that have no backings, because the backings fall off after a while.
We've found it generally works to use the backing from some other pin,
like a tie tack or something. (Hint - the Service Pin works pretty
well as a tie tack if you have a thin tie and a proper backing.) But
then, I've also seen people use them as earrings, shoelace
decorations, ...
