Some of you may have heard in the news about worms that survived the Space
Shuttle Columbia tragedy last Spring. You may not have realized that those
worms were part of an experiment by Kappa alum and former advisor, Nate
Szewczyk (Long F '89). The Fall 2003 Carnegie Mellon Magazine that just
came out has a feature article on Nate and the surprising implications of
his experiment in light of their extraordinary journey. Nate is a postdoc
at NASA Ames and has made it past the first cut in the application process
to become an astronaut.
The article is available online at
<http://www.cmu.edu/magazine/03fall/wormsurvive.html>. The printed Table of
Contents page also features a picture of Nate at a monument to the first
manned space flight in Cape Canaveral, but that page/photo does not appear
to be on the web site.
