Brothers --
Please join me in celebrating the growth of our great Fraternity with the
addition of the Alpha Epsilon Rho Chapter at West Liberty State College in West
Virginia. Over 90 family, staff, and guests attended the reception after the
induction ceremony on Sunday, October 12, 2003. The charter group consisted of
30 members, including 19 actives, six advisors, and five honorary members. One
of the honorary memberships was bestowed posthumously to a brother who was
instrumental in the early efforts of the group -- the father of Brother Bruce
Mayles stood in his son's place for the induction ceremony, and many of his
family attended the reception to witness the public recognition of his
contributions.
The group extended their appreciation to many guests attending with "Thank
you's" going to Brothers Ed Richter and Tom Strong (National Board
representatives), Brother Heather Schartiger (Section 61 Chair), Big Brother Chapter Lambda
Omicron (West Virginia University), and the Bethany College APO Interest
Group -- who served as the welcoming committee for the day's events. A very
special recognition was given by the group to Mrs. Judy Carney, Advisory Chair. As
well as the presentation of a fraternity key throw/blanket, "Mrs. C" was
presented with the distinction of being Member #1 for AEP.
Gifts to group were presented by numerous staff/friends. They included:
The "Kathryn Wilgus Outstanding Pledge Award" plaque, named for the original
founder on the campus and new honorary member (from Lambda Omicron),
A blue/gold scrapbook containing documents/invitation/messages for their
chartering (from Section Chair Schartiger),
A President's Gavel, Invitations/Postage, Ritual robes, and Goody Bags for
the founders (from Brother Jim Hahn, AEP Sponsor),
A chapter felt banner complete with AEP letters (from Brothers John and Barb
Anderson and daughter Katie) [NOTE: Barb also MADE the banner], and
A complete Ritual Kit for future ceremonies (from Region Director Strong).
The charter was presented to Dr. John McCullough, College Provost, who then
presented it to Chapter President Amanda Schmid for custodianship. The campus
library will permanently mount and display the charter for the college.
Finally, the group asked for donations to the American Red Cross, Hurricane
Relief Fund -- to make their chartering a service project as well. Over $50 was
collected for the donation.
The group's newly installed officers are excited about the future for this
dynamic and energized chapter, including sending representation to their first
Region V Conference as "voting members" in two weeks.
Respectfully submitted,
- Jim Hahn, Sponsor
