Janis Joplin in APO's UMOC?
From http://deadheadwillow.tripod.com/janisessay.html:

"The summer of 1962, Janis returned to Port Arthur. She began singing in
public and even made a commercial recording for a local bank. At night, she
was a waitress. In the fall of 1962, Janis returned to the University of
Texas.

In the winter of early 1963, after being voted "ugliest man on campus" by
small minded, petty students, Janis decided to hitchhike to San Francisco
with Chet Helms..."

hmmmm....

I'm very interested in hearing if Alpha Rho chapter ran that UMOC and if
they have any knowledge/historical documentation of this.

Definitely a two-edged sword here- leaving college after this incident
fueled her music career, but also may have fueled depression. Or so the
article seems to imply.
