Michael--
What my chapter did was allowed extensions--if a pledge had requirements left to finish at the end of the pledge period, they had to go in front of the pledge class, explain what they have left and why they could not finish, and the pledge class asked any questions they had. They then took a vote, and I never saw anyone ask for an extension turned down. That brother then has to finish the requirements as soon as they can. If they need to finish some the next semester, they had to finish what they had left on top of regular active requirements (which are a lot more relaxed and less involved than pledge requirements.)

When I pledged, I was an in-season athlete, worked part-time (15-25hrs/wk), was in color guard for marching band, a sorority, and on my dorm's hall council......my chapter has also had a handful of varsity swimmers and people involved in fraternities and sororities pledge. This always worked with us because we were a very relaxed and larger chapter. As long as your pledge program is not too strict and time consuming, AND your active chapter understands that the pledge is busy and can cooperate with this pledge, it works out fine.

I have seen some very strict, time consuming pledge programs, and I have seen very effective relaxed ones. (I am a section rep for a chapter with one of the most thorough programs I have ever seen, and while great, allows for little time for work or other commitements. Some students have no choice but to work--or to participate in the sport/band that gave them scholarship money and should not be turned away because of these factors.) But if someoone is interested in joining the fraternity, I think that their needs need to be taken into consideration. Had I wanted to join a chapter with a very strict program, I NEVER would have been able to participate in this organization.

I am familiar with the type of people who are in Phi Mu Alpha and ROTC (many friends of mine as an undergraduate were in one or even both), and I feel that the qualities of people in those organizations carry over very well to what APhiO looks for in its members--someone who is a friend, a leader, and goes above and beyond in terms of doing service. It sounds like you have a very well rounded individual, and definatley work some thing out for this prospective brother because he would be a great attribute to your chapter and the fraternity as a whole.

Anyone ever have any experience with a prospect who is really interested in
pledging but really busy with classes and/or other orgs? Is it possible to
fit this person in or am I being too general? I have a prospect who is in
the SAEngrs, Phi Mu Alpha, band, & ROTC with such an interest.
