Welcome Back Brothers!!!!

We hope you had a great summer and Labor Day weekend and are ready to get=20
back to your Chapter for another great year of Alpha Phi Omega fun and servi=
ce to=20
others.

By now, many colleges and universities on the semester calendar have started=
=20
classes and that means many Chapters are in the process of getting their fal=
l=20
activities under way.

As your Chapter finalizes its plans for the fall, now is the time to take=20
care of some housekeeping matters that may have slipped through the cracks l=
ast=20
spring. Those issues include:

*Making sure the National Office has your current list of Chapter officers=20
and advisors as well as their current addresses, phone numbers and email=20
addresses.

*Ensuring that all of your pledge and active membership reporting from last=20
spring have been reported to the National Office. If your Chapter did not=20
receive membership certificates or cards for your new class of actives, chan=
ces are=20
that the National Office did not receive those active membership application=
s=20
or fees (the correct fee is now $35, which was effective March 1). This is=20
very important as these new members have completed all of their pledging=20
requirements and it is important that their active membership is duly record=
ed at the=20
National Office. REMEMBER: No one is officially a Brother of Alpha Phi Omega=
=20
until his or her membership is recorded at the National Office. To double=20
check your Chapter=E2=80=99s membership status or if your last Pledge class=20=
was recorded=20
at the National Office, contact Judy Mitchell at chapter.services.dir@apo.or=
g=20
or your Regional Director and/or Sectional Chair.

*Double-checking to make sure your Chapter=E2=80=99s list of graduating seni=
ors were=20
reported to the National Office.

*Make sure your Chapter submitted a National Spring Service Day report to th=
e=20
National Office. This is a new requirement for all Chapters to remain in Goo=
d=20
Standing. Even if your Chapter did not do a Spring Service Day project, your=
=20
Chapter must send a report to the National Office noting that fact.

Many Chapters have planning meetings with their exec boards and advisory=20
committees. This is a great time to do a Chapter Program Planning Conference=
 to=20
review the great things that your Chapter accomplished last year and to plan=
 the=20
great things for the coming year. A CPPC is a great time to determine if you=
r=20
Chapter qualifies for the H. Roe Bartle Award.

In an effort to promote consistent Chapter operations, timely service and=20
membership reporting and better communication between the Chapter and the Se=
c
tional, Regional and National leadership, the Fraternity will introduce the=20
Chapters of Excellence program. Chapters that qualify will be recognized at=20=
the 2004=20
National Convention. More on the Chapters of Excellence program will be sent=
=20
to all Chapters in the early fall mailings.

Also during this time, many Chapters are already working on plans for=20
rushing, recruiting and pledging new members. We would encourage all Chapter=
s to=20
recruit as many members as possible as the Alpha Phi Omega experience should=
 be=20
shared with as many students as possible on your campus. Don=E2=80=99t be se=
lfish, share=20
the opportunity to become a member of Alpha Phi Omega with as many students=20
as possible on your campus.

At the same time, this is also a great time for your Chapter to reach out to=
=20
those inactive members on your campus who have slipped away. We would=20
encourage all Chapters to reach out to those inactive members and encourage=20=
them to=20
become active again. Perhaps your Chapter could have a tailgate party for yo=
ur=20
inactive members before an upcoming athletic event to rekindle the flames of=
=20
Brotherhood.

These Brothers still have much to offer your Chapter and are just needing a=20
friendly face or a phone call to remind them that they are still Brothers an=
d=20
are missed. Chapter retention is a critical part of a Chapter=E2=80=99s memb=
ership=20
program.

In addition to reaching out to our inactive Brothers who are still on campus=
,=20
fall semester is a great opportunity to re-connect with your Chapter=E2=80=
=99s alumni=20
brothers.

This is a great time to invite nearby alumni of your Chapter to come back fo=
r=20
a service project with your new pledges and the actives or perhaps for a=20
fellowship activity like a tailgate party before the Homecoming game. Alumni=
 are=20
great resources that many Chapters under-utilize.

Chapters should also be starting their plans for Alpha Phi Omega=E2=80=99s N=
ational=20
Service Week. This will be the 25th Anniversary of the Fraternity=E2=80=99s=20=
national=20
service event that originally started as National Service Day.=20

More information will be sent to your Chapter and will also be available via=
=20
the National Web Site at www.apo.org in the Service Documents area.

While your Chapter is working on its membership and service programs, there=20
will be an opportunity for your Chapter to participate in Sectional and=20
Regional Conferences this fall. Contact your Section Chair and/or Regional D=
irector=20
for additional information on these events as well as how to contact the hos=
t=20
Chapter for these events. Or, check out the National Web site, www.apo.org.

Participating in Sectional and Regional conferences are a great way to share=
=20
and pick up some new ideas from Brothers from other Chapters that you will=20
meet at these workshops. And you may just make a brand new friend.

The National Membership/Extension Committee is working on a number of=20
programs to help your Chapter increase its membership next year as well as b=
ringing=20
Alpha Phi Omega to more campuses. Your Regional Membership Chair, Sectional=20
Chair and Regional Director are always ready to assist your Chapter in impro=
ving=20
its membership program.

But before I end, I also want to remind you to study hard in your academic=20
courses this fall. Being a good Brother means that you are also being a good=
=20
student and are making progress toward your degree.

Yours in Leadership, Friendship and Service,

Ed Richter
