Amazing....I came out from hiding to comment on something!!!!

It was my understanding that scavenger hunts were only considered hazing if:
1) they are a required event for membership
2) they force or encourage members to do things they don't want to do
3) they force or encourage members to do things that aren't legal

I know many schools that do scavenger hunts that are fun and not even close to
hazing....if you bring back things like flyers that prove you were there or
the things you bring back are easily found and don't have to be swiped.
Therefore, I think digital cameras would be fine as long as the participants
weren't asked to photograph themselves doing something that meets the above
criteria.

An example I have is a chapter where they wanted to get the new freshmen more
familiar with parts of campus and they had silly clues about different
buildings and the teams just had to bring back something that indicated that
building, like a chemistry club flyer to show they had been to the science
building. They had a lot of fun and the winner got a cute little prize. This
was actually done as a rush activity and everyone loved it.

Another I have is a type of scavenger hunt where instead of bringing things
back there was one clue everyone started with. This clue then brought them to
the next clue, and so on until they got to the end where there was a social
event waiting for everyone. This used the idea of problem solving in groups
and the fun of hunting without having to worry about bringing anything back or
doing anything someone might object to. I think that people just need to use
their heads and they can figure out what is and isn't hazing!

Ok....back to my hole in the ground.
