Press Release

War Eagle Memorial Gardens

Starting July 14, 2003, the Auburn Family will have a chance to own a piece of the War Eagle Mascot Program. Alpha Phi Omega will be selling wire clippings from the aviary in a commemorative matted frame.

The War Eagle Mascot Program began at Auburn University in 1960 with Delta Chapter, Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. In 1974 the Amos Elwyn Hamer, Jr. Memorial Aviary was built to house the War Eagle Program. The program ran under Alpha Phi Omega's Service Program for forty years until the spring of 2000. At this time the eagle program was turned over to the Southeastern Raptor Rehabilitation Center. The aviary went dormant until such time as it was removed in the spring of 2003. At that time, Delta Chapter sought after a new project of service to Auburn University, hence the War Eagle Memorial Gardens.

The War Eagle Memorial Gardens are intended to carry on the traditions and history of the War Eagle Mascot Program for future generations to enjoy. This facility shall become an oasis on Auburn's Campus where students and Alumni can view over forty years of tradition and heritage which bonds the Auburn Community. This heritage shall be preserved through the addition of monuments and placards in memory of all Auburn's War Eagles, including each of their biographies, all pending university approval.

In search of funds for this project, Alpha Phi Omega has selected 1000 sets of wire clippings to be sold to the Auburn Family. These clippings are a limited edition set, and they shall be framed along with a collector's edition photo of War Eagle VI, a commemorative coin, and a certificate of authenticity. These commemorative plaques will be available for ordering from Alpha Phi Omega in mid-July, and shall sell for $180, shipping and handling included. All funds shall go solely to the War Eagle Gardens Fund. Orders may be placed at their website, www.aphio.auburn.edu/orders/ .
