[APO-L] Joel Bryants "illegal" activities

Bro. Richter,
The conversation that precipitated the e-mail from Mr. Purnell with was based in an effort to get dis-enchanted Black Bros. back to the frat. just as the great Bro.Bob Harris reached out to me and "brought me back" to the frat.(for which I will forever thank him).There was no subversive Black rule breaking going on. If we were doing something illegal we wouldn't call the office and tell you about it. I was trying to encourage this Bro.to"come back" and participate in a National frat. activity.The task force is perfect because it came out of our resolution and we have feelings too. We love, miss and long for our HBCU chapters. We are saddened when efforts like the ones at U Maryland Eastern Shore (Rho Omicron) and Mississippi Valley State are not sucessful.There are extreme challenges involved with these activities especially as it relates to the obliteration of over 50 years of tradition and history at these chapters. You (or we) wouldn't want your chapter and it's history e!
liminated and we are sorry it happened to ours. In trying to work within the system, I (and many others) feel that we have consistently been racially profiled and prejudged at every juncture no matter how sincere our efforts. This effort to help build this (convention mandated) task force is a prime example of why we feel persecuted for trying to do the right thing. I will NEVER agree with certain new APO philosophy and doctrine but if I didnt break a rule, I don't think it's fair to presume my guilt (as we discussed on Sun.) This person's use of the term "committee" instead of "task force" started a chain of event's that could have led to my suspension. Not because of what I did but because of pre judging which is prejudice.There are many great things we can do for Hortons' vision in those areas where we do agree. I hope that you and the entire National Board will consider a leadership style that includes actually trying to work with ALL Brothers, even the ones who do not !

If you make that effort I promise you that your fraternal experience will be enriched.We do not want to be pre-judged as suspects every time something happens. This is a voluntary organization and all of that talk about "I'm your boss and you'll do what the hell I say or I'll blow you out the water" is inflammatory and unnecessary. No one can co-erce me to do anything. We WANT to play by (or properly change) the rules. We WANT to co operate. One good thing about the women that I have met (Covi,Katz et al) is that they are sensitive to all Bros. Though we disagree on some things there is a level of respect there and if you ask them about me they will tell you that. I too look forward to our continued communication and would like to invite you to our meeting house in Phila. for a fraternal drink and/or lunch in the future.
Horton wanted people to settle thier disputes in a more reasonable manner than by war. Souldn't our Board try the same?

I would like to update you on a previous message I sent concerning Brother
Joel Bryant.
I did speak at length with Brother Bryant on Sunday evening. During this
conversation, I learned that an email message that was sent to me that
identified Brother Bryant heading a committee to start new Chapters at HBCUs
in the mid-Atlantic region was incorrect by the writer. Apparently, the
letter writer misunderstood what Brother Bryant had said to him. Brother
Bryant said that the committee he was discussing with the message writer was
the membership task force that was directed by the convention.
Brother Bryant has assured me that he is not involved in any extension
activities. I also noted that all extension activity needs to be authorized
by Fraternity at the regional level. During our lengthy and very lively
conversation, we also had an opportunity to discuss a number of other topics
including the importance of open communication throughout our Brotherhood. I
look forward to continuing this discussion and developing this dialogue
further.
I just wanted everyone to know that I have followed up on this and to assure
everyone that he is not involved in any extension activities.
As a courtesy, I am copying this note to Brother Bryant so that he is aware
that I have updated those board members who I sent the previous advisory to.
