[APO-L] APO Receives Daily Points of Light Award!

Brothers,
Alpha Phi Omega has been selected to receive a Daily Points of Light Award
from the Points of Light Foundation! We will be the "Point of Light" on
Monday, April 14, 2003--a little more than a week away. If you go to this
address you will see the lovely description of A Phi O that the rest of the
world will see on the 14th and thereafter on the Foundation's website (right
now, this link is the only way to see it):

The Foundation's website explains: "The Daily Points of Light Award honors
individuals and volunteer groups that have made a commitment to connect
Americans through service to help meet critical needs in their communities.
It focuses on the goals for children and youth set by the President's Summit
for America's Future. Each weekday, one volunteer or volunteer effort in the
country receives a Daily Point of Light Award."
This is a nationally recognized and much sought after award--we will proudly
note this on apo.org and in future Fraternity publications and materials.
But, for now things are moving quickly--we were just informed of this honor
and there will not be time to notify chapters, alumni, advisors or
staff/alumni volunteers via US mail. To help spread the word, please forward
this message to those who may not have seen it and check apo.org next week
for further information and ideas for how to celebrate this in your chapter
and on your campus. If the National Office has a current/working email
address for your chapter, information will be sent to you via email.
Regional Directors and Section Chairs will also be emailed information to
send to the chapters in their area.
We are coordinating national publicity/media outreach in LIGHT of this honor
(OK, bad pun!) Do you have any local or national media contacts through your
chapter alumni or others? If so, please inform our National Executive
Director, Bob London:

We're counting on YOU to send out press releases to your campus paper, post
this on campus e-bulletin boards, etc.--a copy of our award letter, a press
release you can use, etc. will be available on apo.org next week. Start
thinking about asking all your Brothers (including alumni) to wear their
service pins (maybe with a ribbon symbolizing "light") and/or letters on
April 14th--when someone asks you what you're wearing, that's an opportunity
to spread the word about the Fraternity/our program.
One of the best ways to help us nationally to help get publicity for you
locally and nationally is to participate in/report on Spring Service Day:
tell us about any project you do next weekend (or this spring) that benefits
youth. That includes projects at sectional conferences and things you do
"anyway." (remember: service reporting is now a requirement for your chapter
to be in good standing just like sending in your annual dues) Find out more

A special thanks to Betty Rauch (former Communication Chair on the National
Service & Communication Committee who coordinated our application to the
Foundation), Ed Richter (current Program Director/past S&C Program Director)
, other current and past members of the National Service & Communication
Committee, as well as the National Office Staff for submitting our successful
application. Most of all, thanks to each of you--we received this award as a
national organization--it is what we do each and every day on campus, in the
community, for our nation and for our world that has resulted in this honor
that will help the Fraternity to "shine" for years to come. What you do
makes a difference in the lives of others and in your life; what you do
matters.
