This is kind of a rant, but it's relevant.
The logo proposal brought up some interesting remarks that were similar to
those said on the floor during nationals during the presentation of a piece
of legislation in National Organization I that changed the language in
bylaws to allow for changing fraternity symbbols, as well as clear up some
lines of authority (who can change main symbols?).
Mainly, the reaction is "We have always had this and we want to keep it this
way forever"
While that might sound fine now, this is a fraternity of the actives. And by
definition, the active membership of this fraternity changes completely an
average of about once every two years (3 semesters average active time plus
sememster of pledging).
That said, leaving things the same forever is just kind of a
couterproductive notion. Things are developed in a specific way for a
specific reason that might not be relevant any more.
Maybe the new coat of arms will be more attractive. Whatever it is, it is
the choice of the actives to change things.
Change is what keeps any organization alive. When it comes down to it, they
must even change at the core of things. APO is a serivce fraternity, always
has been and I hope always will be. But if times dictate change of that in
the future (i hope not) then im sure the actives wont hesitate to make that
change if it is warrented. Those who have refused to change have been run
over. There are countless examples of that.
The point is this: times change, and so must we.
For the record, I'm against changing the coat of arms because theirs just no
reason to.
